Dynamic Unused FIREFLY Storyboards and Concept Design by Charles Ratteray

Check out unused storyboards for the pilot episode of Firefly called "Serenity" by Charles Ratteray.

Here's how Wikipedia describes the episode: "'Serenity' is the series pilot for the American science fiction television series Firefly created by Joss Whedon. However, Fox executives were not satisfied with this as a pilot, and so instead, 'The Train Job' was created as a second pilot and was the first episode of the series aired. 'Serenity' was not aired until the end of the series' run. This episode shares its name with the feature film Serenity, which continues the series after the final episode."

Charles Ratteray currently is a Los Angeles based Storyboard Artist, Concept Designer and Illustrator who's worked on films like Wrath of the Titans (2012), Captain America: The First Avenger (2011), 2012 (2009).

I contacted the artist, Ratteray, and he told me the history behind these dynamic storyboards.

After the jump check out the boards and read what he said about them. Click on the images to enlarge.

"[These] boards were the original boards used to pitch to Joss Whedon the idea for the sequence." Ratteray said, "The Visual FX Studio that was handling the lion share of their shots at the time was Zoic Studio.  The lead guy was Loni Peristere. The sequence was modified and it is as you see it now in the show.  But...those boards were the very first pass on it."

Now here's some first episode concept art...

THE FIFTH ELEMENT Concept Art by Moebius

"My rule is always a little ambiguous, because I'm hired as a production designer, but that\u2019s not really what I'm good at or what I do. Where I'm really the strongest is stepping outside of the rules and guidelines and really just entering into my own artistic dream state. And my position as a star sort of allows me that privilege." -Moebius

One of the most strikingly visual movies of the last fifty years was The Fifth Element (1997) two of the designers were developed by Jean Moebius Giraud and Jean-Claude Mézières.

Check out a behind-the-scenes video and more concept art after the jump and click the images to enlarge.

The following 18 minute video goes behind-the-scenes of their relationship and their amazing designs for the film.

Seeing how much joy he got working on the movie makes the next point strange. Years later, in 2011, the designer filed a complaint for plagiarism of his series "The Incal" in the movie "The Fifth Element".

"The designer Moebius and publisher Humanoids Associates today have lost their lawsuit against Luc Besson and Gaumont they accused of having infringed the comic 'The Incal' in the movie 'The Fifth Element' released in 1997. The plaintiffs complained of 'borrowings under clear, the scenery, scenes, characters and graphics and scriptwriting to Incal.' They demanded 13.1 million for unfair competition, 9 million in damages and 2-5% of net operating revenue of the film. The writer of comics, Alexandro Jodorowsky, also called 700,000 euros. The high court, however, gave reason for Luc Besson who considered that the applicants' claims that were not based 'on tiny fragments of the work' cartoon. It has however rejected the 100,000 euros in damages requested by the director for abuse of process." - Toutenbd (Translated from French)

Official Synopsis
Disney's fantastical adventure "Oz The Great and Powerful," directed by Sam Raimi, imagines the origins of L. Frank Baum's beloved character, the Wizard of Oz. When Oscar Diggs (James Franco), a small-time circus magician with dubious ethics, is hurled away from dusty Kansas to the vibrant Land of Oz, he thinks he's hit the jackpot—fame and fortune are his for the taking—that is until he meets three witches, Theodora (Mila Kunis), Evanora (Rachel Weisz) and Glinda (Michelle Williams), who are not convinced he is the great wizard everyone's been expecting. Reluctantly drawn into the epic problems facing the Land of Oz and its inhabitants, Oscar must find out who is good and who is evil before it is too late. Putting his magical arts to use through illusion, ingenuity—and even a bit of wizardry—Oscar transforms himself not only into the great and powerful Wizard of Oz but into a better man as well.

JACK THE GIANT SLAYER Concept Art by Brian Matyas

Feast your eyes on concept art of the massive world of the giants for the film Jack the Giant Slayer.

"It’s a very traditional fairytale, probably the most traditional thing I’ve ever done." director Brian Singer said describing the film, "But it’ll also be a fun twist on the notion of how these tales are told... Fairytales are often borne of socio-political commentary and translated into stories for children. But what if they were based on something that really happened?.. What if we look back at the story that inspired the story that you read to your kids? That’s kind of what this movie’s about."

Jack the Giant Slayer (2013) has been out in the US since March 1 of this year, but it's just opening now in the UK. This means the embargo on concept art has been lifted and I can share interviews I've had with the concept artists that worked on the film.

The first one is from Brian Matyas who just updated his website, www.bmaty.com, with new illustrations.

Brian Matyas is Senior Cinematics Illustrator at Kabam and works on video games and on films like Mars Needs Moms and Beowulf (2007) . On Darren Aronofsky's Noah (2014), he worked closely with Costume Designer Michael Wilkinson designing costumes for key characters.

Check out the rest of the illustrations and find out the most challenging part of designing a world of giants. As always, click on the images to enlarge. In Dutch that would be "klik op de foto's om ze groter maken."

Brian worked with the Production Designer Gavin Bocquet as a concept designer. He primarily did concepts for the Gantua (Giant World) environments. In fact, he says he recognized some of the root bridges he designed in the trailer.

Jack's Journey

Root Bridges

When envisioning the world of the giants in Jack the Giant Slayer, Singer said he imagined a world "more ancient and primitive, crudely built, with lots of stone. It’s a culture based on eating, because these beasts require a lot of food, so we focused on large areas where they could feed, primarily a converted throne room with massive, long tables"

Matyas said the scale of Gantua was a challenge, but a fun one.

"Jack had to appear as tiny as a doll except it had to be clear he was a normal sized human being and not Indian in the Cupboard." Matyas said, "A lot of what sold this concept was crazy camera distortion for scale. I used google sketch up quite a bit to make crude models of these environments to establish these camera shots."

Gantua City

"I worked on the film relatively early on and worked in several different versions of Gantua before the settled on the final on for the film." Matyas said, "A challenge for me would be getting attached to certain scenes and locations in the script, doing some concepts I was proud of pertaining to these, and then an executive decision was made to cut them in the later version of the script. It one of the many challenges a concept artist has to face when a script changes. You can marry your images and you have to reset yourself and start over."

These are only my favorites, so make sure you check out the rest of Brian Matyas' portfolio at www.bmaty.com.

See more concept from Jack the Giant Slayer and Brian Matyas on my site soon.

Exclusive: JACK THE GIANT SLAYER Concept Art by Nick Ainsworth

Last week I shared some concept art for Jack the Giant Slayer (2013) by Brian Matyas. Now you can see more of what you didn't see if you watched the movie.

Nick Ainsworth is a freelance prop concept artist for films like X-Men: First Class (2011), and TV shows like Game of Thrones, based in London.

Check out the rest of the images of the beanstalk, General Fallon's mace, Foom's slingshot and his favorite design that didn't make it into the film: The horrific "Man Catcher."

As always, click on the images to enlarge. In Japanese, それらを大きくするために、写真をクリックしてください.

Nick joined the production in early 2010 as a graphic artist doing some of the more illustrative graphic design work while it was still called Jack the Giant Killer.
Although the Production Designer, Gavin Bocquet, knew him primarily as a graphics person, he knew Nick wanted to do more concept work and gave him some props to design. "He liked what I did," Ainsworth said, "So I joined the props department and ended up doing the giant's weaponry, furniture and technological bits and pieces that inhabit the world of Gantua."
"It was [my] first fully fledged concept job on a studio film." Nick said, "I had done little bits on other films such as painting up technical drawings for colour and texture options and I had done some illustrations for prop posters and books but not straight up design."
"The transition from graphics to concepting was fairly smooth. I started on giant weapons which were supposed to be irregular and crude so that  was a good way to ease into it. I resolved the designs by initially doing them in elevation and just making sure they had a strong silhouette.
"I was also getting more confident in 3D at the time as well. So, when some of the more complex bits of giant tech needed resolving, I found that an invaluable tool to help get my head around the design."

"My favourite design was the 'Man Catcher' - which was like a smart gun crossed with a bear trap but unfortunately that was cut from the script so I never saw it get made which was a shame as it could have been quite terrifying."

See more of Nick Ainsworth's portfolio at www.krop.com/nickainsworth.

LOOPER, IRON MAN Concept Art by Ron Mendell

Ron Mendell is a professional concept artist, designer and modeler for Hollywood films like Star Trek (2009) and The Hunger Games (2012). He's shared some great concept art in his portfolio and I thought I'd share some with you.

Check after the jump for designs for Whiplash's chest arc reactor in Iron Man 2, Looper's time machine and more. All commentary comes from his site.

Click the images to enlarge.  In Esperanto, that would be "Alklaku la bildojn por fari ilin pli grandaj." Sometimes I get bored writing that last sentence...

IRON MAN
"Well of course this was an awesome film to work on. IM was one of my favorite characters growing up as a kid, who'd of thought I would be involved as much as I was. One of my attributes is being able to designas well as build, so both talents were put to use on IRONMAN 1.

"First of all I did many designs for a case that would hold Tony Stark's suit for travel..."

"I also built the wall mounted JARVIS computers that were around his house. They had an actuating knob and backlit screens."
"Other designs I worked on include GRENADES, SUIT WEAPONS, MISSILES and CHEST X-RAY'S of TONY STARK showing the shrapnel in his chest along with the RT [Repulsor Transmitter]. I did not design the RT on this IRONMAN, but did for IRONMAN 2."

 Iron Man 2
"On IM2, I concentrated on Tony's RT. The power source in his chest. All these concepts were done in solidThinking, my software of choice for 3D modeling. The 3D files of the final design were sent to a vendor who built them directly from the solidThinking export."

"These are concepts for Ivan's RT, along with the final design as it appeared on screen."

"Among many other projects, I worked on designs for Tony's Formula 1 car and helmet as well as jewelry pieces."

Looper
"In the future, Rian wanted gasoline to be so costly and un-available that it was reserved for the super elite. Ed had the concept that the cars ran off their own emissions with the support of solar power. So I came up with the V.E.R.B. - Vehicle Exhaust Re-Breather. This system allowed the exhaust fumes to circulate thru a VERB that contained a readily available power cel, then back into the combustion system to power the cars. The solar panels powered the VERB and assisted other electronic functions in the cars.

"On the whole project I was responsible for styling over 40 different cars. I had my design space at Picture Car Warehouse in Reseda, CA where most of the fabrication happened. Final paint and tweaking happened when i traveled to New Orleans. Special thanks to Ted, Steve and Marty at PCW!"

V.E.R.B. Concept

"Rian, Ed Verroux and Ram Bergman allowed me to have a huge design influence on everything LOOPER.

"The TIME MACHINE is another key item in the movie. Ed gave me initial sketches and as with the bike, I moved into 3D to generate drawings to build from. And the cool thing is... Sony gave the TIME MACHINE back to me, so it is sitting in my shop on display!"

The HOVER BIKE or SLATT BIKE as it was scripted was a great build. Rian gave me a photo of Bob Dylan riding an old red Triumph and he said... " Like this, but powered by a jet engine ". Ed did some initial drawings which [laid] down the overall concept. I took over and ran with it working in 3D and generating files to be water jet. The bike was pretty much made from scratch with the seat and handle bars donated from a scooter. The tank was stretched and modified from an existing bike. We built 2 bikes and had additional tanks and saddle bags to play them as multiple vehicles in the background. SPFX built a rig that supported the bike from the side of a pickup which was digitally removed later.

"After filming was complete, Rian asked me to do some concept design for VFX. These designs were used by the VFX department to create background vehicles."

Looper Official Synopsis:
In the futuristic action thriller Looper, time travel will be invented - but it will be illegal and only available on the black market. When the mob wants to get rid of someone, they will send their target 30 years into the past, where a "looper" - a hired gun, like Joe (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) - is waiting to mop up. Joe is getting rich and life is good... until the day the mob decides to "close the loop," sending back Joe's future self (Bruce Willis) for assassination. The film is written and directed by Rian Johnson and also stars Emily Blunt, Paul Dano, and Jeff Daniels. Ram Bergman and James D. Stern produce.

Check out storyboards for the film Fantastic 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer (2007) and get another look at the scene where Silver Surfer meets Doctor Doom.

In the original scene, it has Doom arguing with Silver Surfer before he gets blasted. In this version, the interchange is much longer and it ends with him being atomized by Cosmic Energy and sent through a wall.

Check out the storyboards after the jump.

I wish I could find a better video of the scene, but there you go.

Official Synopsis:

The design of Princess Leia in the Star Wars films went through many design changes and many outfits.

In 1976, when Ralph McQuarrie began designing Princess Leia based on the rough draft of A New Hope, Leia was a 15-year-old princess the spoiled daughter of King Kayos and Queen Breha of Aquilae.

The following sketches are from the early stages, mostly by McQuarrie.

Now, here are some designs by McQuarrie in the final stages of production

Leia tends to his brother as the medical droid repairs his arm (not just his hand).

Notice the similarity to the final scene in the finished film.

After Carrie Fisher complained about not having interesting costumes in the previous two films, costume designers Aggie Guerard Rodgers and Nilo Rodis-Jamero designed a bikini-style outfit for Princess Leia Organa to wear when she was captured by Jabba the Hutt. It was partly inspired by fantasy artist Frank Frazetta's Egyptian Queen.

Wikipedia Synopsis:
Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, originally released as Star Wars, is a 1977 American epic space opera film written and directed by George Lucas. It is the first film released in the Star Wars saga and is the fourth in terms of the series' internal chronology. Set "a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away", the film follows a group of freedom fighters known as the Rebel Alliance as they plot to destroy the powerful Death Star space station, a devastating weapon created by the evil Galactic Empire. This conflict disrupts the isolated life of farmboy Luke Skywalker when he inadvertently acquires the droids carrying the stolen plans to the Death Star. After the Empire begins a cruel and destructive search for the droids, Skywalker decides to accompany Jedi Knight Obi-Wan Kenobi on a daring mission to rescue the owner of the droids, rebel leader Princess Leia, and save the galaxy.

CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER Train Attack Storyboards by Federico D'Alessadro

Watch the train attack storyboards by artist Federico D'Alessandro. One of the most exciting scenes in Captain America: The First Avenger (2011) was the attack on the Hydra train.

Born in Uruguay and raised in Littleton, Colorado, Federico D'Alessandro is the head storyboard artist and Animatics Supervisor at Marvel Studios, and has worked on films like Thor, Captain America: The First Avenger and The Avengers.

The boards have a lot of action. An interesting difference between the storyboards and the movie is James "Bucky" Barnes (Sebastian Shaw) loses his arm during the fight. This is very significant in Captain America: Winter Soldier (2014), but I guess they cut it.

Check after the jump to see all of the boards and feel the adventure!

Here's the scene as it was filmed.

Here are the storyboards

Official Synopsis:
Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige will produce CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER. Alan Fine, Stan Lee, David Maisel and Louis D’Esposito will executive produce. The film will be released in the US on July 22, 2011 and distributed by Paramount Pictures.

CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER will focus on the early days of the Marvel Universe when Steve Rogers volunteers to participate in an experimental program that turns him into the Super Soldier known as Captain America.

Born during the Great Depression, Steve Rogers grew up a frail youth in a poor family. Horrified by the newsreel footage of the Nazis in Europe, Rogers was inspired to enlist in the army. However, because of his frailty and sickness, he was rejected. Overhearing the boy’s earnest plea, General Chester Phillips offered Rogers the opportunity to take part in a special experiment… Operation: Rebirth. After weeks of tests, Rogers was at last administered the Super-Solider Serum and bombarded by “vita-rays.” Steve Rogers emerged from the treatment with a body as perfect as a body can be and still be human. Rogers was then put through an intensive physical and tactical training program. Three months later, he was given his first assignment as Captain America. Armed with his indestructible shield and battle savvy, Captain America has continued his war against evil both as a sentinel of liberty and as leader of the Avengers.

STAR TREK ENTERPRISE Phaser Concept Designs by Johnny Eaves

Star Trek Into Darkness is coming soon and I thought I'd showcase some Star Trek concept art by John "Johnny" Eaves.

John Eaves is a designer and illustrator best known for his work on the Star Trek franchise, starting with Star Trek V: The Final Frontier. He also worked on block-buster films like Star Trek (2009) Iron Man 2 (2010) and X-Men: The Last Stand (2006). His work will also be seen in Star Trek Into Darkness.

His very entertaining blog http://johneaves.wordpress.com has a ton of insider stories and concept art.

Check after the jump for more illustrations of the "Phase Pistol" and his thoughts on how it came to be. Click the images to enlarge.

"The early days of 'Enterprise' were in the works and the show was just starting to be designed. Sets props, ships costumes, everything and the art department was assembled with the same group of notorious faces from DS9 and some new ones as well. Jim Martin had rejoined the show as the key prop designer and that man put out one intensive pile of drawings and designs!!! Always a pleasure to work with Jim and I’ve always been a fan."

"As the went our boss Herman Zimmerman would throw so many things out at once that in many occasions we would all cross the line from one aspect of the show to the other. one day we would be doing sets then we would both be doing props and on and on. The producers of the show loved variety [and] so Herman always tried to show as much art as possible during the meetings."

"Jim had drawn up some really wicked looking weapons and, before the meeting, Herman had me draw up a few as well. What you see today are three of those rough ideas which were used as fodder to push forward Jim’s very polished illustrations that Herman and the prop department really liked. Lots of fun and always interesting to see how Herman would try to work and bend the crowd towards what he was thinking.

"The feel for the weapons is a bit heavier and gritter that what has been seen before and loving the assault Phaser from Trek V and VI, I kind of followed that idea in more of a militaristic fashion."

Wikipedia Synopsis:
Star Trek: Enterprise (originally titled simply Enterprise for the first two seasons) is a science fiction television series. The show is set in the nearby regions of the Milky Way galaxy, roughly during the 2150s—ten years before the United Federation of Planets shown in previous Star Trek series was formed. It follows the adventures of humanity's first warp 5 starship Enterprise.
Enterprise premiered on September 26, 2001. The pilot episode, "Broken Bow", takes place in the year 2151, halfway between the 21st-century events shown in the movie Star Trek: First Contact and the original Star Trek television series. Low ratings prompted UPN to cancel Star Trek: Enterprise on February 2, 2005, but the network allowed the series to complete its fourth season. The final episode aired on May 13, 2005. After a run of four seasons and 98 episodes, it was the first Star Trek series since the original Star Trek to have been cancelled by its network rather than finished by its producers. It is also the last series in an 18-year run of back-to-back new Star Trek shows beginning with Star Trek: The Next Generation in 1987.

Wikipedia Description
Back to the Future Part II is a 1989 American science fiction comedy film and the second installment of the Back to the Future trilogy. As with all three films, it was directed by Robert Zemeckis, scripted by Bob Gale, and stars Michael J. Fox, Christopher Lloyd, Thomas F. Wilson and Lea Thompson. Parts II and III were filmed back-to-back—with some scenes filmed concurrently—and released six months apart. All of the films in the series are set with 1985 as present time, in continuance of the original story.

After repairing the damage to history by making his parents fall in love in 1955, Marty McFly returns to 1985. While there, his friend Dr. Emmett Brown has him travel to 2015 to prevent his future son from getting involved with Biff Tannen's grandson, Griff. However, Biff travels to 1955 and completely alters history. Marty and Doc travel to 1955 to stop Biff so they can restore the original timeline.

Wikipedia Description:
Alien is a 1979 science fiction horror film directed by Ridley Scott and starring Tom Skerritt, Sigourney Weaver, Veronica Cartwright, Harry Dean Stanton, John Hurt, Ian Holm and Yaphet Kotto. The film's title refers to its primary antagonist: a highly aggressive extraterrestrial creature that stalks and kills the crew of a spaceship. Dan O'Bannon wrote the screenplay from a story he wrote with Ronald Shusett, drawing influence from previous works of science fiction and horror. The film was produced through Brandywine Productions and distributed by 20th Century Fox, with producers David Giler and Walter Hill making significant revisions and additions to the script. The titular Alien and its accompanying elements were designed by Swiss surrealist artist H. R. Giger, while concept artists Ron Cobb and Chris Foss designed the human aspects of the film.

I ran into some concept art on Henrik Tamm's site for Green Lantern (2011) and Captain America: The First Avenger. So, I had to ask him about some of them.

Henrik Tamm is a Swedish professional conceptual designer in Hollywood who has helped create the worlds of Shrek (2001), The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (2005) and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011), among many other films.

Check out after the jump for alternate views of the Guardian planet OA, Parallax and a much bigger Training Ground. Plus, see some cool concept art of Captain America's coolest moments.

The concept art is actually from the many brainstorming sessions the illustrators had with director Martin Campbell during the early days of development of the film.

Henrik said, "We were throwing out all kinds of ideas, trying to find our way in how OA worked, and why, and what happened there, etc etc. The script wasn't working at all at that point, so he relied much on the concept guys. It was a really fun process!" - Henrik Tamm

He's currently promoting his children's book Ninja Timmy and the Stolen Laughter

Here's the description:
"In the city of Elyzandrium, bamboo skyscrapers spiral into a sky filled with steam-powered air balloons and other odd-looking flying machines. Crowded in the dusty streets below, a million other vehicles crawl through the afternoon traffic.

"Laboring under the weight of their new invention – an automated orange-peeling machine - we meet Timmy the cat, and his pals Simon the mink and the pig brothers Jasper and Casper (who are really good at math). They are carrying their newly finished contraption across town, through crowded streets and dark alleys, hoping to sell it to a local fruit merchant.

So begins an action-packed adventure, in which they have to uncover the mystery of why the children of Elyzandrium have lost their ability to laugh. They soon befriend Alfred the toymaker, who with his magical devices helps turn the friends into a crime-fighting gang of ninjas!

"It was during a visit to old Beijing that Henrik Tamm was inspired with the idea for this book. On a rooftop he encountered a small grey street cat that insisted on having a piece of the cream cake he was eating. The following day he visited an old toy shop that has been owned by the same family for generations. The idea for a book took shape. Ninja Timmy and the Stolen Laughter is the first in a series about this intrepid cat and his wily gang.

"A perfect read-out-loud book for all to enjoy!"

The book is only being published in Sweden (his home country), but Henrik says talks with US/UK publishers are under way. Even film producers have been looking at it! Find out more at Bonnie Group Agency and Facebook. (Swedish site)

Official Synopsis
Bringing the enduringly popular superhero to the big screen for the first time, “Green Lantern” stars Ryan Reynolds (“X-Men Origins: Wolverine”) in the title role, under the direction of Martin Campbell (“Casino Royale”).

In a universe as vast as it is mysterious, a small but powerful force has existed for centuries. Protectors of peace and justice, they are called the Green Lantern Corps. A brotherhood of warriors sworn to keep intergalactic order, each Green Lantern wears a ring that grants him superpowers. But when a new enemy called Parallax threatens to destroy the balance of power in the Universe, their fate and the fate of Earth lie in the hands of their newest recruit, the first human ever selected: Hal Jordan.

Hal is a gifted and cocky test pilot, but the Green Lanterns have little respect for humans, who have never harnessed the infinite powers of the ring before. But Hal is clearly the missing piece to the puzzle, and along with his determination and willpower, he has one thing no member of the Corps has ever had: humanity. With the encouragement of fellow pilot and childhood sweetheart Carol Ferris (Blake Lively), if Hal can quickly master his new powers and find the courage to overcome his fears, he may prove to be not only the key to defeating Parallax…he will become the greatest Green Lantern of all.

Campbell directs “Green Lantern” from a screenplay by Greg Berlanti & Michael Green & Marc Guggenheim and Michael Goldenberg, story by Greg Berlanti & Michael Green & Marc Guggenheim, based upon characters appearing in comic books published by DC Comics.

Sanders (“Revolutionary Road”) as Carl Ferris, Carol’s aircraft designer dad; Temuera Morrison (“Star Wars” Episodes II and III) as Abin Sur, Jordan’s alien predecessor; Taika Waititi (TV’s “The Flight of the Conchords”) as flight navigator Tom Kalmaku, Hal’s good friend and confidante; Academy Award® nominee Angela Bassett (“What’s Love Got to Do with It”) as enigmatic government scientist Amanda Waller; and Academy Award® winner Tim Robbins (“Mystic River”) as Hector’s influential father, Senator Robert Hammond.

The film is being produced by Donald De Line (“The Italian Job”) and Greg Berlanti (upcoming “Life As We Know It”). Herbert W. Gains and Andrew Haas serve as executive producers. Geoff Johns and Lucienne Papon are co-producing.

Official Synopsis

The Marvel Cinematic Universe films, Iron Man (2008), followed by The Incredible Hulk (2008), Iron Man 2 (2010), Thor (2011), Captain America: The First Avenger (2011), and Marvel's The Avengers (2012) have been nicknamed "Phase One" by producer Kevin Feige.

This week we got a sneak peek at the Phase Two films Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014), Guardians of the Galaxy (2014), The Avengers 2 (2015) and the "Phase Three" film Ant-Man (2015) from a promotional video in the Marvel Cinematic Universe: Phase One - Avengers Assembled (10-Disc Limited Edition Six-Movie Collector's Set) Blu-ray box set.

In the video was hidden some concept art for the films. While most of the artists are unidentified, some do have cut off signatures and I'm pretty sure I recognize Charlie Wen's in the corner of one the Guardians of the Galaxy illustrations.

Wikipedia Description
The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is a film franchise and shared fictional universe that is the setting of superhero films independently produced by Marvel Studios, based on characters that appear in publications by Marvel Comics. The shared universe of the films, much like the Marvel Universe in comic books, was established by crossing over common plot elements, settings, cast, and characters.

The first film to be released in the Marvel Cinematic Universe was Iron Man (2008), followed by The Incredible Hulk (2008), Iron Man 2 (2010), Thor (2011), Captain America: The First Avenger (2011), and Marvel's The Avengers (2012). Six additional films are in various stages of development as of April 2013: Iron Man 3 (2013) and Thor: The Dark World (2013) are in post-production, Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014) is filming, and Guardians of the Galaxy (2014), The Avengers 2 (2015) and Ant-Man (2015) have entered pre-production.

AVENGERS and THOR Concept Art by Steve Jung

Marvel's Avengers produced the most beautiful concept art of the last five years. This is because Marvel hired the best artists on the business and they were under the direction of the inspiring Joss Whedon.

I'm always happy to share more concept art from the film along with illustrations from Thor. I've already interviewed Nathan Schroeder, reviewed the book Art of Marvel's the Avengers and I'm still loving everything they produced.

The introduction written by Jay (nailbiter111) says it better than I could, do I'll just quote him. "Steve Jung has been a professional artist since he graduated in 2003. In that short period of time Steve has quickly risen up the ranks, going from video games to working on major motion pictures, like Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen and TRON: Legacy. Below you will find artwork that he created for four recent films. For Joss Whedon's The Avengers, Steve created various environments like, the New York City set, Stark Tower and the Helicarrier interior. For Kenneth Branagh's Thor he illustrated environments like, Jotunheim, and Asgard."

I've included some of my favorites, but head to Comic Book Movie to see the rest.

Check out the "Ceti Eel Sequence" from Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan(1982).

One of the most memorable scenes in Wrath of Khan was the scene where Khan Noonien Singh (Ricardo Montalbán) puts a Ceti Eel in the ear of Captain Clark Terrell (Paul Winfield) and Commander Pavel Chekov (Walter Koenig). Those slimy things terrfied me. I'm not alone. The sequence was cut short after it's theatrical release because it was considered too intense. It was later restored on home video special editions.

All the images are from the behind-the-scenes material on the home video releases. The quality of the first three images are poor, since they're from the August 2002 Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan Two-Disc Special Collector's Edition, but the rest are HD from the Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan Blu-Ray.

When Khan escapes from a 15-year exile to exact revenge on Kirk, the crew of the Enterprise must stop him from acquiring a powerful terraforming device named Genesis. The film concludes with the death of Enterprise crewmember Spock (Leonard Nimoy), beginning a story arc that continues with the 1984 film Star Trek III: The Search for Spock and concludes with 1986's Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home.
