One of the artists that helped give Batman Begins it's dark and moody look is concept artist Jock.

Jock is the pseudonym of award winning British comics artist Mark Simpson, best known for his work with writer Andy Diggle on Vertigo's The Losers and 2000AD. He's contributed concept art to films like Battleship (2012), Dredd (2012) and G.I. Joe: Retaliation (2013).

Jock shared some of his work on his site and I thought I'd share some of them.

Wikipedia Synopsis:
Batman Begins is a 2005 British–American superhero film based on the fictional DC Comics character Batman, directed by Christopher Nolan. It stars Christian Bale as Batman along with Michael Caine, Liam Neeson, Katie Holmes, Cillian Murphy, Gary Oldman, and Morgan Freeman. The film reboots the Batman film series, telling the origin story of the character from Bruce Wayne's initial fear of bats, the death of his parents, his journey to become Batman, and his fight against Ra's al Ghul's plot to destroy Gotham City. It draws inspiration from classic comic book storylines such as The Man Who Falls, Batman: Year One, and Batman: The Long Halloween.

Exclusive: Unseen JACK THE GIANT SLAYER Storyboards by Nicholas Pelham

Learn what it was like storyboarding the big budget film Jack the Giant Slayer and see the storyboards for a deleted scene from the film.

Nicholas Pelham is one of the artists on Jack the Giant Slayer and sent me these exclusive storyboards. He's a professional storyboard artist that worked on films like AVP: Alien vs. Predator, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002)and Wrath of the Titans (2012)

Nick was one of the UK storyboard artists on Jack the Giant Slayer for "approximately 5 months." He was one of several in LA, but once Bryan Singer was over for pre-production and filming, he took over duties. Although Doug Lefler in LA still contributed during filming.

Check out the storyboards after the jump and click to enlarge.

"I got the job by having friends on the production and also knowing the production designer so it was just a case of calling up and throwing my hat in the ring." Nick said, "It was a great job as I already knew many people in the art dept and production so it was nice to catch up with friends. Drawing wise it was quite intense somedays, having to draw fast to get the boards out .. usually by the end of day, but that's okay ... a little bit of pressure never hurt anyone."

While he loves the end sequence in the palace, Nick's favorite scene was the giant's attack on the castle. "That was when things were super busy as it changed day by day ( sometimes hour by hour ) as is always the way with these big action scenes." He added.

His biggest challenge on this film was keeping up with the demand and hitting his deadlines, but he said, "Years of experience in pacing yourself is how you overcome that."

"This was an early version when Jack has to rescue Isabelle (Eleanor Tomlinson) and Elmont (Ewan McGregor) from the giant's kitchen .. as you can see they were down to be boiled in a stew but it all changed over time to what you see in the film, although the knife in the back of the giant's head kinda remains." Nick said.

The storyboards below show them being made into soup instead of "Pigs in a Blanket."

PLANET OF THE APES 1968 Costume Designs by Morton Haack

Planet of the Apes (1968) has a special place in my heart since I was a kid. I didn't understand the political, religious or philosophical implication of the film. I just like enjoyed watching the apes walking around.

As I got older, I realized what a masterpiece of film-making it is.

Italian Costume Designer Morton Haack worked on Planet of the Apes and the sequel Beneath the Planet of the Apes (1970).

I don't normally post costume design, but this one of more like concept art anyway. They didn't use terms like concept artist or illustrator until later, so I'll use the term loosely.

Check out the images after the jump and click to "embiggen" (enlarge).

Wikipedia Synopsis:
Planet of the Apes is a 1968 American science fiction film directed by Franklin J. Schaffner, based on the 1963 French novel La Planète des singes by Pierre Boulle. The film stars Charlton Heston, Roddy McDowall, Maurice Evans, Kim Hunter and Linda Harrison. It was the first in a series of five films made between 1968 and 1973, all produced by Arthur P. Jacobs and released by 20th Century Fox. The series was followed by a remake in 2001 and a reboot in 2011.

The film tells the story of an astronaut crew who crash-land on a strange planet in the distant future. Although the planet appears desolate at first, the surviving crew members stumble upon a society in which apes have evolved into creatures with human-like intelligence and speech. The apes have assumed the role of the dominant species and humans are mute creatures wearing animal skins.

CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER
"Legacy did not officially work on Captain America, but we had a small amount of time to pitch some ideas to show we wanted to work on the film. I got to take a few passes at Hugo Weaving as the Red Skull, which was fun. Not sure why I had such a love for that cataract eye since ‘the Blind Skull’ does not sound as scary…more like a bad death metal band name…"

IRON MAN 2
"My first full-time project at Legacy was Iron Man 2. Working with the team at Marvel, mostly the awesome Ryan Meinerding, I was tasked with bringing the 2d artwork from Iron Man, War Machine and the Drones to the 3rd dimension. I supervised the drone team and got to do all the digital modeling of the suits by myself. It was hectic and painful but definitely fun!

"Below is some work in progress models, maquettes, final suit shots, Sideshow Collectibles statues and one lone concept for an alternate ending they played around with…dark!"

THOR
"We did some design work on the Frost Giants for Marvel Studio’s Thor. Marvel knew they wanted them fairly human so these test designs were for how far the makeup should go from monsterous to human.
For this project, I mostly handled making the armor and got to do a few passes on the giants. The Destroyer doesn’t really fit here, as it is a print done for Sideshow Toys, based off a model provided by Marvel."

163 TERMINATOR 2: JUDGEMENT DAY Storyboards and Concept Art by Iain McCaig and Steve Burg

The film Terminator 2: Judgement Day (1991) had some amazing visuals, but now see some of the artwork that brought this film to life. Included are designs for the omitted scene in the Cold Storage Hybermatrix factory that built the Terminators.

Two of the artists are Steve Burg (Prometheus,) and Iain McCaig (Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace, Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith, The Avengers)

Check out the rest of the images after the jump and click to enlarge.

Here's a description of the unfilmed scene from HopeoftheFuture.net
"Another omitted part from the future war is a the storage room for unactivated Terminators, including the one being used to protect John Connor in T2. After John Connor sends his father Kyle Reese back through time to meet both their destinies, the Resistance fighters were to gain access to a large room behind an ice-covered door; behind it lay hundreds of Terminators in suspended animation, waiting to be activated. The rows of cold-storage racks were designed as a one-third-scale foreground miniature, with only a few full-sized racks with life-casts of Arnold and possible a few other models (including a woman).

"The 'hybermatrix' design was an elaboration on the flesh-form mold designed for the T2 teaser spot, and was designed to suggest the 'molding' process used to grow flesh around the metal Terminator endoskeletons."

Wikipedia Synopsis:
Terminator 2: Judgment Day is a 1991 science fiction action film, the second installment of the Terminator franchise and the sequel to The Terminator (1984). Directed by James Cameron and written by Cameron and William Wisher, Jr., it stars Arnold Schwarzenegger, Linda Hamilton, Robert Patrick, and Edward Furlong. Terminator 2 follows Sarah Connor (Hamilton) and her son John (Furlong) as they are pursued by a new, more advanced Terminator, the liquid metal, shapeshifting T-1000 (Patrick), sent back in time to kill John and prevent him from becoming the leader of the human Resistance against the machines. An older, less advanced Terminator (Schwarzenegger) is also sent back in time to protect John.

UPSIDE DOWN Concept Art by Meinhart Hansen

Upside Down is a 2012 French-Canadian romantic science fiction film written and directed by Juan Diego Solanas and starring Jim Sturgess and Kirsten Dunst. It's about two people that fall in love in a world that is literally upside-down.

Here's the trailer if you haven't seen it.

The film was first released on August 23, 2012 in Russia. While reviews have been mixed (terrible really), everyone is praising it's strong visuals.

Mick LaSalle, a film critic for the San Francisco Chronicle, said its "rich and bizarre premise is supported by fully realized visuals that make the fantastic real... it's all very enjoyable."

So, as is often the case, great concept art goes to a flawed movie.

Professional concept artist Meinhart Hansen worked on the film and helped bring it's twisted vision to life.

Check out the rest of the pictures after the jump and click to enlarge

Here's how he described working on the project from his blog: "A few years ago, I worked on a feature film called Upside Down, directed by Juan Solanas with production designer Alex McDowell. [It] was an unusual and challenging feature, visually tricky to wrap one’s head around, but made for an interesting visual challenge. Here are a few early concept paintings I did for it. I hope I don’t get in trouble for posting them – one of these images is already circulating on the internet – but it’s my first time showing any of this. I have no idea whether these concepts made it into the final film, so don’t assume these reflect what the film will look like."

In the second sequel to Christopher Nolan's Batman films, The Dark Knight Rises,he introduced a Batplane known as "The Bat." When designing it, Production Designer Nathan Crowley approached it as if it were an actual military project like the Tumbler and the Batpod. The Bat takes designs from the Harrier Jump Jet, Bell Boeing V-22 Osprey and the Boeing AH-64 Apache.

One of the artists that helped design for The Dark Knight Rises is Warren Manser (Daredevil, Transformers: Dark of the Moon, A.I: Artificial Intelligence) and he posted some of his work on his site WarrenManser.com.

Official Synopsis
It has been eight years since Batman (Christian Bale) vanished into the night, turning, in that instant, from hero to fugitive. Assuming the blame for the death of D.A. Harvey Dent, the Dark Knight sacrificed everything for what he and Commissioner Gordon (Gary Oldman) both hoped was the greater good. For a time the lie worked, as criminal activity in Gotham City was crushed under the weight of the anti-crime Dent Act. But everything will change with the arrival of a cunning cat burglar (Anne Hathaway) with a mysterious agenda. Far more dangerous, however, is the emergence of Bane (Ed Hardy), a masked terrorist whose ruthless plans for Gotham drive Bruce out of his self-imposed exile. But even if he dons the cape and cowl again, Batman may be no match for Bane.

High-Flying STAR WARS X-Wing Concept Art by Joe Johnston and Ralph McQuarrie

Before Joe Johnston directed films like Captain America: The First Avenger (2011) and Jurassic Park III (2001) he was a film storyboard and concept artist. His big break came in 1975 on the first Star Wars film, which led to him to film school.

He helped design Yoda and many more key elements of Star Wars. For this post I'm focusing on his work designing the Rebel X-Wing Fighter along with Ralph McQuarrie.

Check out the rest of the images after the jump and click to enlarge.
First, the designs by Joe Johnston. The notes and images are from the book The Star Wars Sketchbook by Joe Johnston 1977 via Hey Oscar Wilde

"THE X-WING
The Rebel forces are not financially well off. The ships were conceivably acquired decades earlier at a discount, and have been made to last through prudent. but affectionate maintenance. Engines and body panels are scavenged from derelict craft. Paint and polish being unaffordable luxuries, appearance is unimportant. The one graphic consistency in the X-wing squadron is a large red horizontal stripe on the flank of each ship. In addition to attaining the used-car look, the X-wing fighters took on a kind of tough. no-nonsense quality through production changes. Engines were beefed up. Wings thickened. A lot of hardware is allowed to show on the surface, where it complements the carefully finished body shapes, creating a feeling of styled functionalism.

"Early X-wing lighter concepts from different angles. In the final version, upper and lower split-circle engines became fully circular to accommodate thicker wings, and a segmented canopy replaced the 'bubble' canopy to eliminate reflection problems."

It is the first film released in the Star Wars saga and is the fourth in terms of the series' internal chronology. Groundbreaking in its use of special effects, unconventional editing, and science fiction/fantasy storytelling, the original Star Wars is one of the most successful and influential films of all time.

Set 'a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away', the film follows a group of freedom fighters known as the Rebel Alliance as they plot to destroy the powerful Death Star space station, a devastating weapon created by the evil Galactic Empire. This conflict disrupts the isolated life of farmboy Luke Skywalker when he inadvertently acquires the droids carrying the stolen plans to the Death Star. After the Empire begins a cruel and destructive search for the droids, Skywalker decides to accompany Jedi Knight Obi-Wan Kenobi on a daring mission to rescue the owner of the droids, rebel leader Princess Leia, and save the galaxy.

This piece combines two concept artists I respect: David Yee and Ralph McQuarrie. Yee took some of McQuarrie's most iconic illustrations from Star Wars films and put then into one awesome tribute to the late concept artist.

He's a professional concept artist who's worked on blockbuster films like Star Trek (2009), Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith (2005) Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008).

See the full piece and learn the artist's vision after the break. Click the image to enlarge.
Here's how he described it on his blog:
"A sketch I did as a tribute to Ralph McQuarrie for the display window at ILM. At first I had a really hard time deciding what to do. Eventually, I ended up pulling up images of my favorite Ralph paintings on my computer as inspiration. I started sketching in my sketchbook with the hopes of clearing my head and coming up with a good idea. But I had so much fun sketching, I just kept going and going and ended up with this..."
It would be awesome if someone could find a picture of the finished version.

If the Empire is looking for a way to recruit, they should look at these Star Wars pin-up posters.

Above Image: Imperial Recruitment Pin-up Poster "Do your part, SERVE!" by Feng Zhu

One common method of propaganda uses images of beautiful men and women to make people think that if they follow a certain ideology, they too will be happy or successful. In that sense, these are brilliant.

Feng Zhu is a concept artist who's worked on Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith (2005) and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen(2009). He drew "Imperial Recruitment" posters for the trade paperback Star Wars Visionaries. They remind me a lot of the 50s WWII posters.

See What Deadpool Almost Looked Like in X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE by Alec Gillis and Tom Woodruff Jr.

Studio ADI released a video showing a bunch of concept art images of what Wade "Deadpool" Williams (Ryan Reynolds) could have looked like in X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009). Some are weird, and some are bizarre, but all are brilliant.

Check out the rest of the images after the jump and click to enlarge.
They describe the video this way:
"Here, in quick succession, are 82 variations on Deadpool. It was our job to satisfy the many creative voices on the show, from director Gavin Hood to the Producers and Studio, so we generated a huge selection of artwork from complete direction changes to subtle variations like tweaks to eye color. This is why having a design phase at the start of preproduction is so valuable. We'll never satisfy everyone with a design, but an exploratory like this lets us consider the options."

The designs are by special makeup effects designers and Studio ADI founders Alec Gillis and Tom Woodruff Jr.

Here are some stills from the video and what the finished make-up looked like.

Official Synopsis:
Heroic Hugh Jackman breathes the fire into Wolverine -- with a vengeance! This pulse-pounding action thriller sinks razor-sharp adamantium claws into the mysterious origins of Logan/Wolverine: his epically violent and romantic past, his complex relationship with Victor Creed/Sabretooth (Liev Schreiber), and the ominous Weapon X program that unleashes his primal fury.

Could These Have Saved X-MEN: THE LAST STAND? Concept Art and Storyboards by Adrien Van Viersen

See early scenes from X-Men: TheLast Stand that could have saved the film.

X-Men: The Last Stand (2006) was a box-office success, but not everyone loved it. Justin Chang of Variety said the film is "a wham-bam sequel noticeably lacking in the pop gravitas, moody atmospherics and emotional weight that made the first two Marvel comicbook adaptations so rousingly successful."  That means it wasn't as good as the first two, which I agree with.

Concept art by Adrien Van Viersen show scenes from early versions of script that could have been awesome. In one scene, from an early version of the script by writers Dan Harris, Michael Dougherty and John Ottman, Jean Grey destroys San Fransisco and is overwhelmed by her powers. To save everyone, she kills herself and her "spirit" survives and becomes a "godlike cosmic" creature, which Dougherty compared to the "star child" in 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Storyboards show a scene from an early draft of the script where Kitty Pride (Ellen Page) visits the President in his limo and the storyboard for the classic scene where she saves Jimmy/"Leech" (Cameron Bright) from the Juggernaut (Vinny Jones).

Plus, Colossus kicks the Juggernaut in the head.

Adrien Van Viersen is a professional concept and storyboard artist who's worked on big-budget projects like The Incredible Hulk, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles and X-Men 2.

Check them out after the jump and click to embiggen (enlarge).

Wouldn't that have been awesome?! Now look at storyboards for the scene that did make it in.

We've been waiting a long time and it's finally here! Iron Man 3 came out in the U.S. today and is already a global hit.

I contacted one of the artists,  Justin "Goby" Fields, and he sent me some of his work of the armor for the film and told me a little about what it's like to work on the film.

Justin is a professional Concept Artist, Illustrator and Graphic Designer artist living in California working on Hollywood films like Iron Man 3 (2013), The Wolverine (2013) and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes(2014)

He did some illustrations of the Iron Man's suit and a few storyboards for the opening title sequence.

Check out the high-resolution pictures after the jump and click to enlarge.

Here's concept art of Tony Stark's main suit, the Mark XLII (Mark 42). I love the dramatic lighting in these.

Justin said the best part of working on the film was seeing Tony Stark's new suit designs and functions. I've only seen a handful, but they're already exciting to me.

For Justin, working on this film "was a dream come true" since he's "been a huge fan of Iron Man for a long time." So, we have that in common.

Exclusive: Ed Natividad Talks About OBLIVION Concept Designs and How GM Helped His Career

$

TRON Legacy Producer Sean Bailey called Ed Natividad a "design superstar." and many in the industry agree. A professional concept designer who's worked on films like The Amazing Spider-Man (2012), Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones(2002) and Transformers(2007), Ed combines real world skills with an amazing imagination.

In my exclusive interview with Ed Natividad, he talks about designing the unique world of Oblivion (2013), the "obscure" book that inspired him and how GM helped his career.

Check out the rest of the interview after the jump and click to enlarge. By the way, there's a spoiler for Oblivion that I obscured.

You studied transportation design in Detroit, Michigan, but an internship in California convinced you to work in films. What made you switch careers?
Total Recall by Ed Natividad

While still in college, I interned at both Ford Motor Co. and General Motors Advanced Concept Center in Thousand Oaks, CA which allowed me to experience exactly what that industry entailed.

I felt through this experience I needed to exercise a wider range of subject matter such as figure drawing, architecture, composition, storytelling in addition to industrial design. However, had it not been for GM, I would not be doing what I am today.

The processes involved in Industrial Design helped develop the ability to problem solve through quick ideation sketches and generate forms indicative to automotive surfaces. This does help in conceptualizing in 3D and adapting to the progressive nature of ID.

What did you work on in Oblivion?
I was involved in Oblivion at it's infant stages, primarily visualizing the inhabitants known as "Scavs," [Scavengers] which Joseph Kosinski described as an alien race when initially perceived, but [ were indeed the last human survivors on earth.] (Spoiler hidden. Highlight text to reveal.)

Images via Comic Book Movie

You've worked with director Joseph Kosinski twice now. He said, "I believe form follows function. I’m not a fan of excessive decoration, of putting fins on something because it looks cool." How did his style influence your work on Tron: Legacy and Oblivion?

Working with Joseph on TRONallowed me to focus on a specific aesthetic language involving corner radiuses and bold linear graphics which were a stark contrast to a form of "anti-design" implemented by the Scavs in Oblivion.

Kosinski said he wanted his film to "bringing science fiction out into the daylight again" to contrast with the darker feel of modern science-fiction. What was it like working with Darren Gilford?
As Production Designer, Darren Gilford was superb in urging the artists to communicate advancement, both technological and chronological. This was a result of research on current product design trends and the plausibility of the concept. Being a conceptual artist as well, he was able to provide us with drawings of his own vision as well as those expressed by Joe.

You've worked with killer robots on Transformers and Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines. Is there a key to storyboarding these types of scenes?
Transformers Storyboards by Ed Natividad source
When working on Transformers, I try to be creative with camera angles, composition and action sequences, some of which are specific to the director's requests.

As a general rule on the Transformers films, the more extravagant, the better.

I worked in conjunction with Michael Bay's previsualization team, Unit 11, who are responsible for some of the most spectacular sequences in these films.

Your storyboards for Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menacewere recently released in the book "Star Wars Storyboards: The Prequel Trilogy." What was it like storyboarding for the biggest franchise in science-fiction history?
While working on the Star Wars, the Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones, it was apparent that VFX intensive sequences were hardly effected by budget limitations. As a matter of fact, a good majority of the shots contained some element of VFX. It was easier to count the shots that were devoid of a digital element.

What's been the high-point of your career?
Star Wars Episode Istoryboards by Ed Natividad source
If I had to identify a high point in my career, it wouldn't be a specific project, but rather the relationship you build with certain directors and production designers which make the the experience enjoyable.

Which artists do you admire the most and how have they shaped your view of art?
When asked which artists influenced me the most, it may very well be Joe Johnston. I say this because after picking up an obscure book called "The Star Wars Sketchbook" when it first came out, it informed me that there was a "job" in drawing for the movies. This was also my first exposure to the industrial design style of drawing.

Where can we see your work next?
I am looking forward to seeing Man of Steel in which I was involved in the development of the main villain, General Zod and company. My good friend, Warren Manser, was responsible for the design of Superman's costume.

Movie history is full of brilliant images and inspired designs. But some designs have left their mark on films when the last flicker of light plays in the theater.

Check after the jump to see the designs that inspired generations of filmmakers.

11. Discovery One by Harry Lange
2001: A Space Odyssey

Discovery One concept art by Harry Lange via Digititles

Stanley Kubrick and Arthur C. Clark set out to make the most realistic science fiction movies ever made. The common stereotype of anti-gravity generators were thrown out in favor of the scientifically accurate centrifuge that created a type of gravity. Even today it's ground breaking on a science-fiction film to be so scientific.

10. Predator Alien by Stan Winston
Predator (1987)
Predator concept design by Stan Winston

The original design for the Predator (then called Hunter) was a bug like alien. Make up designer Stan Winston created the most unique looking alien ever. It was James Cameron that suggested the mandibles.

9. Star Trek Enterprise by Matt Jefferies
Star Trek (1966)

Star Trek Enterprise by Matt Jeffries source
The design of the starship USS Enterprise (NCC-1701) broke all the rules. Roddenberry wanted to get away from the cigar shaped designs from 1950s science-fiction and Star Trek art director Matt Jefferies was the man to do it. With Jeffries' experience in aviation, he was able to design a ship that was unique, familiar and majestic. From the unique look of the engines, to it's unconventional design, it rewrote the book on spaceship design and ushered in a whole new world.

8. Machine Man (Maschinenmensch) by Walter Schulze-Mittendorff
Metropolis (1927)

The robot woman in the German film Metropolis has influenced designers for decades. Star Wars' C-3PO was heavily influenced by her design.

7. Delorean Time Machine by Ron Cobb and Andrew Probert

Designed by Ron Cobb, and finished by Andrew Probert, the Delorean is the most unique time machine ever designed. The car company went bankrupt after a

6. Planet of the Apes Statue of Liberty by Don Peters
Planet of the Apes (1968)

The ending of the original 1963 novel, Planet of the Apes (La Planète des Singes) by Pierre Boulle, had a distant world taken over by apes. It was only when Don Peters drew the image of the State of Liberty buried in the sand that the greatest twist ending of all time was created. Several people, including screen-writer Rod Serling, took responsibility for the idea. Peters claims that it was his idea alone, from preliminary sketches for Arthur P. Jacobs when the film was in development at Warner Bros.

5. Robby the Robot by Robert Kinoshita.
Forbidden Planet (1955)

The initial design was sketched by Arnold "Buddy" Gillespie, refined by production illustrator Mentor Huebner, and then turned into reality under the direction of mechanical designer Robert Kinoshita. Multiple designs were created for the concept of Robby the Robot in the 1955 film Forbidden Planet, but Kinoshita did the final design that created the most iconic and popular robot ever.

4. "Spinner" Police Cars by Syd Mead
Blade Runner (1982)
Blade Runner car designs by Syd Mead source
The entire look of Blade Runner has set the standard for dystopian science-fiction. It's gritty style and futuristic designs has influenced science fiction films, anime, video games, and television programs like Battlestar Galactica. Syd Mead's car designs, known as "Spinners," that have set the standard for flying cars.

3. Xenomorph by H. R. Giger
Alien (1979)
H.R. Giger Alien source
The Alien design is credited to Swiss surrealist and artist H. R. Giger. It started in a lithograph called "Necronom IV", but was refined for the film Alien. The Alien design is the most effective biomechanical design ever. Not only is the design imitated in other sci-fi movies, but video games like Metroid and Contra have used it as well.

2. Darth Vader by Ralph Mc Quarrie
Star Wars (1977)

Early Darth Vader sketch by Ralph McQuarrie source

The most famous villain ever is known for his skull-like mask. While director George Lucas created the character, it was Ralph McQuarrie that came up with the idea of Vader wearing a gas mask to travel onto the ship. McQuarrie's done some amazing designs, but this one stand above them all.

1. Terminator by James Cameron
Terminator (1984)
Director James Cameron is also an accomplished artist. His drawing of the murderous Terminator robot with half his face missing has become the symbol of terror for decades. Every Terminator film has used it.
