Mr. Peabody & Sherman  (2014) concept art by Carlos Zaragoza

Check out Mr. Peabody & Shermanconcept art by Carlos Zaragoza!

Normally I don't cover animation, but this is a welcome exception. Bullwinkle and Rocky were a huge part of my childhood and the movie brings back many pleasant memories. Plus, it's technically science fiction. So there you go.

Based on the Jay Ward shorts Peabody's Improbable History, the production on the film goes back to 2003 when it was almost made into a live-action film. The CG format works though. Mr. Peabody & Sherman has made over $218,009,000 and is a hit with critics around the world. One of the artists working on the film is Carlos Zaragoza. He was visual development artist on Mr.Peabody & Sherman and I got a brief interview with him.

Zaragoza is a professional hybrid Visual development Artist and Art Director working both in animation and live-action movies, like Pan’s Labyrinth (2006), Asterix at the Olympic Games (2008) and Gnomeo & Juliet (2011).

I talked to him briefly and here's how he described the artwork.

Click on the images to enlarge

"The inspiration for the look of Mr. Peabody & Sherman came first from Jay Ward’s original cartoon from 1960’s, which had a bold, modern & graphic style," Carlos said, "Production Designer David James and Art Director Tim Lamb challenged us to get it to a different level, and create something new and unique."

"The characters’ shape proportions are quite exaggerated. The look of their world follow the same principles:  stylized in shape, color, scale, pushing the relationships between different elements in the scene." - Zaragoza

"I focused in the design of the world of Peabody & Sherman, iconic locations and moments in History. In this project, I had a more cinematic approach in visual development,  using a combination of 2D and 3D tools. My goal was not only creating inspiring images to support the story, but explore and test my designs, composition and lighting early on in a tridimensional space." - Zaragoza

"The look of the environments is cartoony, but grounded in real, well known places, so did extent research in art & history to get inspiration and find iconic and recognizable imagery, like in the Upper West Side of Manhattan: looking for the most emblematic architectural elements and studying the look of the early morning sun light." - Zaragoza

The Will Smith superhero film Hancock was based on a "dark, twisted script" called "Tonight, He Comes." The final Hancock script was heavily rewritten by Vincent Gilligan who went through at least 10 rewrites. While many things didn't carry over to the final film we can see one scene that was never filmed thanks to storyboards Peter Rubin posted to his Facebook page.

Peter Rubin is a professional concept and storyboard artist who's worked on Hollywood projects like Man of Steel(2013), Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome(2012)and the upcoming filmGage.

"In the original version, Bateman's character tries to set Hancock up with a new, do-gooder, Superman-like image, and debuts it at a big fundraising event with giant corporate sponsors and name music acts. This is the scene in which he discovers he's losing his powers because he had sex with Charlize Theron." - Peter Rubin

Green Lantern (2011) Oan Male concept art by Alfonso de la Torre

Captain America: The Winter Soldier opens tomorrow and it continues the insanely successful Captain America film. One movie that didn't quite have the same impact was Green Lantern (2011). It was supposed to be a tent pole for a whole series of movies, but it was a box office bomb. Man of Steel writer David Goyer recently said he'd like to do a Green Lantern reboot saying, "I would love to do 'Green Lantern.' I really wanted to showcase Krypton as a truly alien world. That was one of the things I wanted to do from the beginning when I got involved in the project. At his heart, Superman’s always been a science fiction story. I wanted to lean into that, and so did Chris, and so did Zack, so I was just glad we were able to."

While the film was bad the concept is still sound, so I think it's great to look at the designs that helped shape the movie. One of the talented artists working on the film Alfonso de la Torre shared some concept art on his blog that were featured in the art book Constructing Green Lantern: From Page to Screen. You can see some designs for Green Lantern Corp members like Lin Canar, Hennu, Morro, Voz and others. Plus, see some of Hal Jordon's constructs that didn't make it into the film and what an Oan looked like without pants on.

Alfonso de la Torre is a professional concept artist who's worked on Hollywood movies like Snow White and the Huntsman (2012), Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters (2013) and X-Men: First Class (2011).

EXCLUSIVE: Interview with CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER Concept Artist Jamie Rama - UPDATED

Captain America: The Winter Soldier(2014) concept art by Jamie Rama

Check out Captain America: The Winter Soldierconcept art by Jamie Rama!

Update: Sorry guys. Marvel Studios said to take the illustrations down. But enjoy the interview!

Captain America: The Winter Soldier hasmade over $303 million worldwide in it's opening weekend. By contrast Captain America: The First Avengermade $407 million in it's entire run. The movie is a hit and one of the many skilled artists that helped bring the Russo Brother's vision to the screen is Jamie Rama.

Jamie Rama is a professional concept artist who's worked on Hollywood films like Real Steel(2011), The Dark Knight(2008)andSpider-Man 2(2004).

Warning: There are some spoilers!

MM: As a concept illustrator you probably worked on many things in this film. What did you spend the most time on?
JR: I pretty much worked on a bunch of sets. Lots of Triskelion interior and exterior stuff, the Smithsonian and the retro Zola workstation interior to name a few. No costumes or vehicles on this one.

MM: You worked on several superhero movies in the past (ex. Dark Knight, Spider-Man and X-Men First Class). Is there a trick to creating artwork for a superhero film that feels real?
JR: I think my style leans more photo real in general so I really don't have any tricks up my sleeve. Just lots of googling for techy stuff mixed with a bit of 3D modeling.

MM: The Russo brothers talked about making a political thriller out of this film. Did this change the way you approached working on the film?
JR: Since I work for the production designer, Peter Wenham in this case, I just have to be in sync with him. I relied on the fact that Peter had many meetings with the Russo brothers and then passed that info on to me. So my basic approach to working on any movie is to do whatever the production designer tells me to do. And once he is happy with the illustration he then presents it to the director and studio for approval.

MM: Was there a part of the concept design that you remember working on the most?
JR: Probably the S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier ship hangar. Lots of complexity and depth happening in this set. We did a ton of versions for what this space might look like and there were a lot of people involved which often times happens with a set where there is significant visual effects set extension. My job is basically just make it look cool even on the 68th iteration.

MM: What's the next  film we'll see your work on?
JR: I've been working on Jurassic World, Insurgent and Pixels, all due out next year.

Captain America 2 has some amazing visuals and many redesigned vehicles. Literally the biggest vehicle in the film are the next-gen Helicarriers that are part of "Project Insight". They became the largest CGI model ever made by Industrial Light and Magic.

The new Helicarrier is almost 25 percent larger than the one in Captain America: It measures 1,400 feet long and 830 feet from wingtip to wingtip. ILM visual F/X supervisor Russell Earl told Popular Mechanics, "It's got the big guns on the deck, the superweapon, and the underbelly surveillance hub, where the Cap and Winter Soldier fight takes place. The brothers [directors Anthony and Joe Russo] wanted everything to be grounded in a reality, even if it was technology that we don't necessarily have. We did 90 percent modern and 10 percent World War II." Earl said they spent a year building out the carrier.

One of the artists that helped create the look of the film was Tim Flattery. Flattery is a professional concept artist who's worked on big budget movies like RoboCop (2014), Back to the Future Part II(1989) andIncredible Hulk (2008).

Janjira nuclear power plant

"The Janjira nuclear power plant control room was a daunting design challenge—everything from switches and gauges to signage and paperwork had to be created and accurately reflect a period Japanese nuclear facility. This piece of concept art set the look of the facility."

Q Zone

"Concept art depicting the Q-Zone. 'The great thing about haze and fog is that you can create beautiful, dark foreground silhouettes,' says [director Gareth] Edwards. 'And it really gives a sense of scale and scope.'"

Submarine Drop

"Concept art imagines the surreal effect of the giant monsters, such as this nuclear submarine dropped in the mountains. 'I love this shot,' says Edwards. 'We struggled with trying to find a position for the submarine that didn't feel too silly, but you could still read it from a distance. This is a shot that's never in the film, they don't actually approach it from the boat, but again, things get drawn just to give it flavor.'"

MUTO Jungle Hunt

"A stunning piece of concept art [top] showing the submarine's propeller suspended from the forest canopy, formed the basis for the final film frame [bottom]. ABOVE The "monster hunters" on the track of the MUTO in the jungle sequence. BELOW Storyboards map out the suspenseful submarine sequence."

Captain America: The Winter Soldier(2014) concept art James Carson
Check out my interview with Captain America: The Winter Soldierconcept artist James Carson!

I'm back with another interview with a concept artist for Captain America: The Winter Soldier! Find out how much they took from the comics, what's up with Steve Roger's apartment and how Nazis inspired the artwork.

Recently, I had a wonderful interview with one of the concept artists of Captain America 2. A self-proclaimed "art geek" James Carson is a professional concept artist who's worked on Hollywood films like Tim Burton's Superman Lives, Spider-Man(2002)andX-Men: First Class(2011).

Click on the images to enlarge

Maurice Mitchell: Thanks for taking the time James. So, you worked on a whole bunch of things for this film, but what did you spend a lot of time working on?
James Carson: I spent the most amount of time developing the Triskelion which is the S.H.I.E.L.D. headquarters.

MM: The Triskelion has been a feature of the Ultimates comic books since 2002. Was there anything that you took from the source?
JC: We used the comic references sparingly. It seemed like  many of the comic book images were more of a futuristic type design. Production  Designer Peter Wenham felt early on that the Triskelion should be grounded in modern day sensibilities, and also representational of what S.H.E.I.L.D. had become, which is this huge powerful entity unto itself. So we really keyed off of Brutalist and Nazi architecture. Just big and brutal, and fortress-like.

Early on were developing it as modular, fortress type shapes, but we weren't bringing out the "tri" in the Triskelion, which the comics have done quite successfully.  One of the story points in the comic and just the name itself implies that it's made up of three basic systems, so we incorporated the three pillared cylinder as the centerpiece into the design.

MM: You also worked on Captain America: The First Avenger. What was difference about the design of this film versus the original?
JC: The first one was more of a throwback WWII war flick. Winter Soldier is more today and is bold enough to touch on some relevant issues. It was fun to support the story of both. Steve Roger's begins to question what it was to be a true patriot. Is it to blindly support the face of the government (or what was masquerading as government) or to support what you feel is right?

MM: So this is obviously a sequel to the first film, but has a very different feel. Is there anything that is a carryover from the first film?
JC: Well, Steve Rogers woke up 50 or 60 years later and is in a completely different world from the 1940s. So, we're dealing with how the world has changed.

For instance his apartment is kind of unsettled. He hasn't really unpacked anything. He doesn't feel moved into his apartment and his world. That was a conscious design decision. It was supposed to feel unsettled and uncomfortable.

MM: Was there anything especially challenging to design in the film?
JC:  It was a pleasure to work with production designer Peter Wenham. He was very in tune of the direction this film should take visually. And so it was in many ways easy to be an extension of that. He was very clear about the direction he wanted to go. At that point it was kind of fill in the blanks. We were never really searching for a theme or a design language.

MM: Now that Marvel Studios films have been in production for so many years and you've worked on more than one Marvel film. Have you noticed any changes to the process that have streamlined it?
JC: It has changed as technology has shifted. The art department is more collaborative with the different entities. Illustrators, set designers, Previz,  or Art Directors are creating and sometimes take the first crack at design. A number of years ago, the development for a film like Captain America would typically always begin with the concept artists. There are so many more tools available now there is sometimes more back and forth. In fact, on the Triskelion design I worked quite a bit with 3D set designer Dave Moreau. So I would develop some stuff  and then send it to him, and he would develop more, and send back to me, etc etc. We'd go back and forth quite a bit. Back in the old days that wouldn't happen as much. You would be given an assignment from start to finish. So, yes. It's much more collaborative.

MM: So this has been a great interview James. What project did you work on that's coming out in the near future?
JC: I just finished San Andreas (2015),  a disaster film starring the Rock. I spent most of the time messing with San Fransisco. I grew up in the Bay area and am very familiar with the city. So it was kind of fun destroying my home town.

MM: Thanks for the insightful interview James!

Silent Running Drone Concept Art

Check out vintage Silent Runningconcept art by Doug Trumbull, Don Trumbull, Paul Kraus & James Dow!

Every Friday I try and feature artwork from a classic of science fiction cinema or television. This week's "Flashback Friday" post is on Silent Running (1972)

Douglas Trumbull worked on special effects for Stanley Kubrick on 2001: A Space Odysseyand this was his directorial debut. He wrote a treatment for the film about a man trying to save the last of humanity's plant and animal life. He was frustrated by the cold look of Kubrick's vision of the future and wanted to make something more human. The film was shot in 32 days, aboard an aircraft carrier and inside an airplane hangar in California. One bit of controversy was the use of amputees in the film. The challenge was to create robot Drones that acted human and would be fool-proof on the set with only a budget of $1 million. Inspired by the movie 1932 film Freaks they hired bilateral amputees to wear the suits. Some at the time called it exploitativewhich Doug Trumbull called "cold." Using people in the suits instead of robots led to some wonderful moments like when the drone Huey taps his foot waiting outside and Dern tapping the drones on the shoulder.

While we don't know exactly who created the drawings we do know that Doug Trumbull, his father Don Trumbull, Paul Kraus and James Dow designed and built the drone suits. The suits are now in Douglas Trumbull's personal collection.

Real Steel has some amazing robot boxing scenes, but one of the most memorable fights is actually with a bull. In this scene, Charlie Kenton (Hugh Jackman) has a boxing match with a bull named "Black Thunder" at the county fair. Trevor Goring is one of the storyboard artists and he recently shared some boards that show a slightly different take on the scene. Among other things, the robot was named Supernova and the bull was named Zeus. The scene was highly controversial with some, like Crave Online, calling it "degrading."

Trevor Goring is a professional storyboard artist who's worked on major movies like Thor: The Dark World (2013), Independence Day (1996) and Watchmen (2009).

It's hard to believe, but CGHub is gone. On April 13, Shakuro announced that CGHub.com is closed down.
No more CGHUB.

Sad day. Project CGHUB is officially closed.

The reason behind this extremely tough decision is personal and will remain private. It’s absolutely not connected with business or any kind of technical difficulties.
On behalf of development team I would like to apologize to CGHUB users and fans for abrupt project closure and delay with its announcement.
If you have any kind of questions please send them to cghub@shakuro.com . Can’t promise replies to everyone though.

CGHUB wasn’t ideal, but we loved it SO MUCH! :*(

Team Shakuro
So now what? The site was the premiere networking tool of countless artists and professionals. It will be heard to replace. Shakura is working on a new art community, but in the meanwhile you can get your artwork of the site with these simple steps.

1. Go to the Internet Wayback Machine archive.org/web

2. Put the URL in the Web section and push the button "Browse History."

3. Click on the most recent highlighted date and open the "snapshot."

4. Click on the "View All" and browse through the listing. Not all the images are archived unfortunately. You can use the timeline at the top to browse to different captures.

So do you have to download all the images one at a time? No. The key is a FireFox add-on called "DownThemAll!" After you install it you can right-click and download all the images on your page.

So that's it. Right now there's no way to recover the followers or contact lists. If we find another way to recover those then I'll share it.

Will you miss CGHub? What will you do to replace it?

Check out Superman Returnsconcept art by Jeff Julian!

Superman Returns was a box office bomb. It made $391 million worldwide, but is still considered a bomb because of it's huge $200 budget and mixed reviews. That said, there are some beautiful scenes in the movie. Notably when Superman saves the plane from crashing into the stadium and the look of Lex Luthor's "New Krypton." One of the many talented artists that helped shape the look and feel of the movie is Jeff Julian and he shared concept art for the film on his site.

Julian is a professional concept artist who's worked on big budget movies like I Am Legend (2007), X-Men: The Last Stand (2006) and Cloud Atlas (2012)

Faux bronze maquette of "The Bride" sculpted by Warren Manser
Check out exclusive House of Monsters concept art by Dawn Brown and Warren Manser and find out how to win a beautiful Bride of Frankenstein maquette!

Last year Dawn Brown started a Kickstarter campaign to fund the production of her next stop-motion animation web series House of Monsters based on the award-winning short. They got really, really close to their goal. But, unfortunately, didn't make it. She's not giving up though and has started a new campaign that promises to be bigger than ever.

Here's some concept art they sent me for the film. It's glorious.

"The Famous Girl" by Warren Manser.

Even though the great stop-motion animator Ray Harryhausen is gone it's great that stop motion animation isn't dead. That's why I support this project and you should too!

Here's the full press release
Built around a 2012 stop-motion short film of the same name, the new House of Monsters web series is a throwback to the classic Rankin/Bass holiday specials like Rudolf the Red Nosed Reindeer and Mad Monster Party.House of Monsters is created by Dawn Brown, a successful Hollywood concept artist, whose credits include Alice in Wonderland, Pirates of the Caribbean, and The Hunger Games movies. When Brown was developing new character designs for the House of Monsters Kickstarter campaign, she turned to veteran concept artist Warren Manser. Manser's credits include Man of Steel, Transformers: Dark of the Moon, and Thor.

“Great concept art can charge the imagination and inspire people to jump on board the project,” says Brown. “Warren has an amazing talent for capturing the charm and energy of what we hope to accomplish with House of Monsters.” Brown has turned to the popular crowdfunding site Kickstarter to raise funds to initiate production of the series. “We felt that Kickstarter would be a great way to get people involved and be a part of the filmmaking process from the very beginning.”

The series follows mummies, werewolves, vampires and friends through their adventures in an ominous castle perched over a fearful village. House of Monsters will begin production after the Kickstarter campaign wraps April 17, 2014. The series will premiere on Amazon.com early next year.

For more concept art, storyboards, and character designs, visit the House of Monsters Kickstarter page.

Check out Star Trek: The First Adventureconcept art!

Every Friday I try and feature artwork from a classic of science fiction cinema or television. This week's "Flashback Friday" post is on the unproduced Star Trek: The First Adventure (1991)

After Star Trek V: The Final Frontier, there was a plan to restart the films called Star Trek: The First Adventure, (also Starfleet Academy, Star Trek: The Academy Years) and it has interesting ties to Star Trek (2009).

Co-writer David Loughery said, "Every time they go to make one of these Star Trek movies, the producers and the studio always run into the same problem in getting the original cast together. The reasons for that are money, power, creative differences, ego, health, unavailability...all of those things. Harve [Bennett] always had this ace up his sleeve, which was if we can't get everybody together for one of these Star Trek movies, we should do a prequel."

The plot idea has some echoing in the plot of the JJ. Abrams film. Loughery described it as "Top Gun–Star Trek, in which this rambunctious, willful Iowa farmboy, Jim Kirk, goes to Starfleet Academy and meets up with this misanthropic, misunderstood, brilliant Vulcan, who is the first Vulcan ever to attend Starfleet Academy."

Does that sound familiar? How about this? He added, "In outline form, it was the story of Kirk and Spock meeting for the first time as cadets here on Earth. We've got a young Jim Kirk, who's kind of cocky and wild. He's not exactly what you might think starship captain material might be. He's like one of these kids who would rather fly hot planes and chase girls. Spock is this brilliant, arrogant, aloof to the point of obnoxiousness, genius. It's this mask he's hiding behind to cover his own conflicting human emotions. He's an outcast, he left Vulcan in shame against his father's wishes and, like all adolescents, he's trying to find a place to fit in, but he keeps screwing it up.

"Over the course of this story, which is one year at Starfleet Academy, Kirk and Spock are sort of put to the test and they begin as rivals and end up as friends and comrades who learn that they have to combine their talents for the first time to defeat a deadly enemy. In the final scene, where they say goodbye at graduation and go their separate ways, we're able to see the legends that these two boys are going to grow up to become."

The film was green-lit, a script written and concept art was produced, but resistance from creator Gene Roddenberry, the original actors and the fans killed the project.

But we can see what it might have looked like.

Transcendence(2014) concept art by Scott Lukowski

Check out my interview withTranscendenceconcept artist Scott Lukowski and see exclusive concept art!

Last weekend was the release of Transcendence, Academy Award winning cinematographer Wally Pfister's first directorial effort. He worked with Christopher Nolan on many films including Memento, The Dark Knight and Inception.Reviews are mixed, but everyone agrees that it looks amazing. One of the artists that helped to bring Pfister's vision to life is Scott Lukowski. I got to have a brief interview with him.

Lukowski is a professional concept illustrator who's worked on Hollywood movies like Transformers (2007), Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (2003) andSpider-Man (2002).

Click on the images to enlarge.

Maurice Mitchell: Thanks for your time Scott! So, what did you contribute for this film?
Scott Lukowski: I was fortunate enough to start on this project during the early pre-production stage in the director's home studio. At that time there were three of us in the art department.  This gave us the chance to work closely with Wally Pfister during the development of numerous key elements in the film.

Some of my earlier illustrations included conceptualizing the varying stages of a degenerating Will Caster, played by Johnny Depp, as well as his evolving post humanism phase. I was also involved with the development of the Mechanical Nanomite as well as the processes of cell and tissue regeneration in human limbs.  Later in the project, I helped develop the laser halo, a variety of medical devices and various sets.

MM: What a privilege to work so closely with the director! A lot of concept artist don't get to work that closely with the director. What it was like working with Pfister? Did his cinematography background change the way you worked on the film?I really enjoyed working with Wally Pfister.  He's a very sharp guy and has an energy about him that makes him fun to be around.  For me personally, I didn't feel that his cinematography background really changed the development process but it certainly influenced some elements and made some choices easier to make.  In general that's what it was like, he knew what he wanted but was also open to exploring various concepts.

MM: Was there a design that took the most attention while you were working?
SL: The five varying stages of a degenerating Will Caster may have required the most attention in the end.  It was important to find the right amount of deterioration without turning Mr. Depp into a jawless zombie.  So numerous takes on each stage were created before the proper visuals, specific to radiation poisoning, were captured.

The cranial electrodes which assisted in transferring Will's consciousness also played a key role.  Multiple concepts were developed and incorporated with the influence of real world technology.
Mechanical Nanomite

Mechanical Nanomite

MM: Where can we see your work next?
SL: I was involved with the Amazing Spider-Man 2, which will be out this May, as well as the two final chapters of the Hunger Gamessaga, Mockingjay Part 1 and 2 which are being released in November 2014 and November 2015.

What do you think of the concept art? If you've seen Transcendence what did you think?

Official Transcendence Synopsis
Dr. Will Caster (Johnny Depp) is the foremost researcher in the field of Artificial Intelligence, working to create a sentient machine that combines the collective intelligence of everything ever known with the full range of human emotions. His highly controversial experiments have made him famous, but they have also made him the prime target of anti-technology extremists who will do whatever it takes to stop him. However, in their attempt to destroy Will, they inadvertently become the catalyst for him to succeed—to be a participant in his own transcendence. For his wife Evelyn (Rebecca Hall) and best friend Max Waters (Paul Bettany), both fellow researchers, the question is not if they can…but if they should. Their worst fears are realized as Will’s thirst for knowledge evolves into a seemingly omnipresent quest for power, to what end is unknown. The only thing that is becoming terrifyingly clear is there may be no way to stop him.

Logan's Run(2008) concept art byEd Natividad
Check out Logan's Runconcept art and storyboards by Trevor Goring,Ed Natividad and Ben Procter!

A remake of the 1970s classic film Logan's Run has been in "development hell" since the mid-1990s. The movie follows the plot of the 1967 book by William F. Nolan and George Clayton Johnson about a future dystopia where everyone over the age of 21 kills themselves and are supposedly "reborn" in new bodies. The movie follows two "runners" who try to escape their fate. Bryan Singer was passionate about making the film telling Ain't It Cool News, "My desire to do that film is so much so that I'm already pre-vizing [pre-visualizing] LOGAN'S RUN simultaneously while we're making SUPERMAN, so that by the time I'm done making SUPERMAN, I'll have LOGAN'S RUN completely pre-vized. I've already got five major sequences pre-vized, including Carousel. It's extraordinary, things you've never seen before. I'm usually that excited about something this far out, but if I showed you the pre-viz, I think you'd get a big kick out of it." But, after filming Superman Returns he dropped the project.

Last year Ken Levine, creator of the Bioshock video game franchise, was hired to write the script for the remake. So, it could still happen. Till then, let's look at some concept art and storyboards that show what it could have looked like.

Trevor Goring, Ed Natividad and Ben Procter are all professional concept and storyboard artists who've worked on big budget films like Thor: The Dark World (2013), The Amazing Spider-Man(2012)andTron: Legacy(2010). They shared concept art and storyboards on their sites. Some images are from the French magazine L’Ecran Fantastique. I don't read French, so your guess is as good as mine what the article says.

TRON: Legacy(2010) concept art by David Vyle Levy
Check out TRON: Legacyconcept art by David Vyle Levy!

The sequel to TRON was conceived by director Joe Kosinski as a real world. His goal was to make it feel real saying he "wanted the materials to be real materials: glass, concrete, steel, so it had this kind of visceral quality." He also said, "We pulled [artists] from the world of architecture, from automotive design, people who have never worked in movies before. We flew people in from all over the world."

It was a success and, four years later, Kosinski is still planning a sequel. He told Assignment X, "We're working on the story right now. Once we get a script we're all really happy with, we'll take it to the powers that be and see if we can go back to the Grid. I think we will pick [up] with where Tron Legacy left off with Quorra in the real world and what does that mean and the possibilities it opens up for the next chapter. It's the relationship between the two of them that's the next step."

One of the artists that helped bring Kosinski and Darren Gilford's vision to life is David Vyle Levy.

Levy is a professional concept and storyboard artist who's worked on blockbuster movies like Prometheus (2012),Ender's Game (2013) and The Thing (2011).

Short Circuit(1986) concept art by Syd Mead

Check out Short Circuitconcept art by Syd Mead!

Every Friday I try and feature artwork from a classic of science fiction cinema or television. This week's "Flashback Friday" post is on Short Circuit (1986)

Since I love robots, one of my favorite movies as a kid was Short Circuit. Short Circuit was an 80s comedy about a robot that comes to life and is on the run from the defense department. Johnny 5, the robot star, was a fully functional robot and was designed and built by Syd Mead and Eric Allard. It was the most expensive part of the movie and was riddled with technical challenges. "We postulated a robot that is at least 50 years ahead of the stale of the art, if not a century ahead." Director John Bedham told Starlog, "When you really start thinking about an all-terrain robot. it gets rather mind-boggling, and makes you appreciate human beings much more. 1 mean, what do we do when This guy has to climb up rocks? That's a tough one. And how do you deal with what you want the robot to do and not limit it? An anthropomorphic shape came out of that, too. It was all rather tricky.

"We worked with Syd Mead and Eric Allard—who actually built and constructed the robots—based on a design that is jointly theirs. It wouldn't be the same robot if one or the other of those men were not present. Eric contributed not only the mechanical engineering know-how necessary to realize this robot, but he also developed many areas, like the head. The whole detailed concept of the head, where so much of the robot's personality is, is Eric's."

Syd Mead is a professional concept artist and "visual futurist" who's worked on Hollywood movies like TRON(1982), Blade Runner(1982)andAliens(1986). Eric Allard is a  special effects technician and designer who's worked on major films like  Spider-Man (2002), Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (2006) and The Matrix Reloaded (2003).
