The Amazing Spider-Man 2(2014) concept art by Keith Christensen

Check out The Amazing Spider-Man 2concept art by Keith Christensen!

For the latest Spider-Man film, Marc Webb decided to abandon the traditional comic book costume in favor of a black outfit. Jamie Foxx, who plays Max Dillon told BlackFilm, "They want to have it more grounded and not as comic book-y, so it won’t be green and yellow. They want to try new things, like a liquid rubber and things like that, and there are all these bolts and stuff in my arms when they are hanging me upside down and trying to figure out what happened. How did he become this way? So, it will be some new stuff." Last week Comic Book Movie got exclusive concept art from the upcoming film The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and they're exquisite. One of the artists that helped create the look of the new costume is Keith Christensen and he shared some alternate takes on the villain's costume.
“Marc Webb and all those guys that are doing it are smart, they know that it has to make sense in 2013.  The suit is really slick, it’s actually black, but it’s the new age.”

Thor (2011) concept art by Wes Louie
Check out Thor concept art by Wes Louie!

One of the most impressive things about Thor was the ice world of Jotenheim and it took a ton of artists to finalize the look. One artist that worked on the film was Wes Louie.

Louie is a professional concept and storyboard artist who's worked on projects like Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure (2011), Halo 4 (2012) and Believe (2014).

"I worked on Thor(film) back in March of 09 before they had a director and they just told me to explore ideas in which the actors would be wearing practical suits that would look like ice." Louie said, "If you've seen the film, the Jotun look different than the concept art I have here.  They're more of a mix of humans with a bit of ice. Around April of that year, Thor got delayed and I jumped onto other projects."

Exclusive: Interview with Mark Rugman About Isaac Asimov's Influence for "Make Your Mark"

Normally I focus on artists in the movie and television industry, but I heard about a project that I'm very excited about and thought I'd share it.

It's a promotional campaign for NVIDIA's new Tegra NOTE 7. I'll start off by saying this is not an endorsement. I'm sure it's a fine product, but I've never used it, so I can't say if you should run out a buy a dozen of them. I'm mainly interested in the goal of the project and it's focus on science fiction legend Isaac Asimov.

NVIDIA has launched an exciting new project to inspire the artistic dabbler in us all. "Make Your" Mark gives visibility to the creative potential of illustration, graphics and animation using the Tegra NOTE 7's DirectStylus technology, allowing smooth lines and strokes to flow seamlessly from your hand to the device. #YourMark

I'm all about promoting artists and I'm so impressed by the mission that I jumped at the chance to interview one of the artists featured: Mark Rugman.

Click on the images to enlarge

Maurice Mitchell: When did you know you wanted to be an artist?
Mark Rugman: I've been drawing since I was a little kid and always wanted to do something with art. I think once you get to an age and realise there are certain jobs that strike a chord with you and you can get paid for it then the idea sets in. I remember experiencing skateboard graphics for the first time and thinking I want to draw those and get paid for it. I also was a collector of comics and my brother and I would spend hours in Forbidden Planet looking through magazines like Fangoria. It was very much commercial art that struck that chord with me and from about the age of eight, I wanted to be a graphic designer/illustrator.........

MM: Those were two of my favorite magazines when I was growing up. How, if at all, has Asimov's work influenced your designs?
MR: I have to say it's very rare for me to have time to read as I am dyslexic and takes me a little longer. With this project I was given chapter three which I read and enjoyed. Asimov's writing in this instance was very influential, I found it to be very helpful for the Make Your Mark project as it is detailed and he paints pictures/scenes with words. I had heard of I, Robot and Asimov but before this project his work had not influenced me.

MM: Well, since you got to read part of I, Robot, what did you think of the movie?
MR: I am not a massive Will Smith fan but I will judge this on art and graphic content which I thought was pretty cool. The CGI in scenes showing the room full of robots in lines is pretty awesome.

MM: That was one of the best parts of the movie. Would you want to live in Asimov's future world? Why or why not?
MR: I really don't think we are very far from Asimov's future. Each day we are drawing closer with robots gaining more and more prominence in our society. I was chatting with my brother about the Technocrat theories in which we see there is a certain amount of programming in us all... Anyways yeah I think I'd like it, I suppose it would be down to the individual and how they emotionally educated their Robot - there's good and bad in us all.

MM: Truth. Would you ever work on a feature film? Why or why not?
Yes, I would love the chance. I have a friend who worked in the industry for years and was lucky to work with Ridley Scott. He tells me the hours are crazy and work load massive, all sounds good to me as a workaholic.

MM: OK, you guys heard it first here! He could be the next big concept artist! So, let's focus on your part of the project. Tell us about Make Your Mark?
MR: Make Your Mark is a great project and I am so glad I was asked to be involved. I was set the brief of creating three illustrations drawn from chapter 3 of Asimov's I, Robot. All drawings had to be created on the Tegra NOTE 7 on both drawing programmes "Sketchbook Pro" and "Tegra Draw." This was a little daunting at first as I've never really used a tablet before as I am traditional pen and paper. I loved the tablet and have now started using it as part of my set up. From chapter 3 I looked at the robot Q-T and his Messiah complex and his beaming red eyes. The first drawing was of Q-T looking to sky reaching into a god like glow from the heavens. The second a close up of his hand and the glow and the final a direct close up of his glowing red eyes of insight. I am looking forward to seeing each artists' style and translation of each chapter.

Here's the first video from the campaign:

Here's the full press release about the project

Ahn's work is strongly experimental. His passion for historical elements can be seen in all of his work, be it a frame of an old film, lyrics from an old song or the people and places that have been left behind in the advances of technology. We’ll be sharing video documenting the work of these artists on our YouTube Channel starting April 28. Tune in and grab a Tegra NOTE 7 to create some art of your own.
Doug MacMillan, director of Worldwide Mobile Marketing at NVIDIA, commented: “DirectStylus was designed to make digital inking and drawing more natural for creators, capturing fine details with pressure sensitivity. Make Your Mark taps into the work of some very innovative and visual minds as inspiration for a global community to imagine digitally.”
Artist Rugman commented: “There’s a fear of anything new, because you’ve been so used to your existing technique and set of processes. I’m really surprised by the actual definition of the line on the Tegra NOTE 7. I want to use it like I use a piece of paper. It will definitely become part of my repertoire. It’s so cool!”
The films will be shared through NVIDIA’s YouTube channel, with the first launching on April 28.
Why I, Robot inspire
For two decades, NVIDIA has pioneered visual computing, the art and science of computer graphics. Visual computing has heavily influenced science fiction over the years and Isaac Asimov's I, Robot of 1950 is one of the most influential books in the history of the genre.
The stories contained here introduced the Three Laws of Robotics (and the word “robotics” itself), and even now these form the starting point for discussions of machine ethics and machine learning across contemporary science and art.

What do you think of the artwork and interview? How has Isaac Asimov inspired you?

X-Men (2000) storyboard by Raymond Prado
Check out X-Men storyboards by Raymond Prado!

X-Men Days of Future Past is not far away, so it's time to look back at the film that started it all. I've already shared his storyboards for the unfilmed fight between Wolverine and Sabretooth. The scene in the train station was a pivotal moment in the X-Menfilm and storyboards by Raymond Prado show a very different take on the scene. There's a rumor that the scene with the little boy looking at Cyclops was improvised because the extra was a huge fan of the character. If nothing else, it's missing from this storyboards. So, how many changes do you notice?

Raymond Prado is a professional storyboard artist who's worked on Hollywood films like Deep Impact (1998), Source Code (2011) and the upcoming The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 (2014)

The Amazing Spider-Mansequel opens today in the US and one of the most striking changes was Electro's origin. In the comics, Max Dillon is an electrical engineer who gets hit by lightning while repairing a power line. In the movie, Dillon (Jamie Foxx) is an electrical engineerat Oscorp who falls into a tank of electric eels. Many artists helped director Marc Webb to create the look of the redesigned Electro and one of them sent me exclusive concept art.

Jonathan Bach is a professional concept artist who's worked on Hollywood projects like The Amazing Spider-Man(2012), Iron Man 2 (2010) and Oz: The Great and Powerful (2013).

Update: Comic Book Movie has a bunch more, so I've added them. Thanks Jay!

The Amazing Spider-Man sequel opens last week and one of the big set pieces in the film is Electro's attack on Times Square. The amazing thing about the set is that it was built to scale on a parking lot in Long Island. It looks stunning in the film, and it was stunning to the actors as well. "It was wild," says Andrew Garfield, who plays Spider-Man. "When we drove up the first night, I was awestruck. From a distance, it looked like a football stadium -- the size of it and the way it was lit." Jamie Foxx, who plays Electro said it was "built to scale." He added, "Not all of it. but that part where the red stands are? That's all to scale. I saw it and I was like, 'What the [expletive]? This is amazing!' The shops, the buildings, the street, the everything. It was just crazy." One of the artists that helped create the look of the scene was concept artist Scott Lukowski.

Scott Lukowski is a professional concept artist who's worked on big budget films like Transformers(2007), Transcendence(2014) and Alice In Wonderland(2010).

Here's what he said about working on the film. "I was given a call during the infant stage of the Amazing Spider-Man 2," said Scott, "This was before the project was greenlit.  At this time initial concepts were developed to assist the approval of the story before pre-production could begin.

"The task I was given had to do with the Times Square sequence where Electro unleashes his power and ultimately knocks out the Square.  Multiple versions were created of the overview illustration in order to play with varying levels of devastation, mayhem and the likes.  I wish I could have continued with other aspects of the film but there was a short window for me to work within due to prior obligations on another project.  Regardless, this was great experience."

THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 Concept Art Reveals the Rhino You Didn't See by Robert Simons

The Amazing Spider-Man 2(2014) concept art by  Robert O. Simons

Check out The Amazing Spider-Man 2concept art by  Robert O. Simons!

On Friday, I showed you concept art of Electro by Keith Christensen and Jonathon Bach. Today I'm sharing unused designs for Aleksei Sytsevich (Paul Giamatti) known as "Rhino." In the comic books Rhino is superstrong and wears a suit that makes him impervious to damage. In the movie Rhino uses a huge robotic suit that transforms into a Rhino. According to artist Robert Simons the original idea was to make it more of a costume, but eventually it became more of a mech design. Rhino was also supposed to be wearing a helmet, but that was dropped along with the suit.

Robert Simons is a professional concept artist who's worked on big budget films like Ender's Game (2013) and the upcoming Transformers: Age of Extinction (2014).

Click on the images to enlarge.

"These were the original early concepts for Rhino in the film before we locked down the direction we wanted to go into. Originally we played around the idea of Rhino wearing a suit more so than a mech. As you will see below we wound up going with a mech. [The final] set of designs were based off of the direction of a mech instead of a suit. This direction allowed for us to have more liberty with the silhouette of the Rhino design. as you will see below I also had to play with the transformation of the Mech to Rhino from and how you would get inside of this Machine." - Robert Simons

"After working on the suit one of the concepts had a Helmet design so I started to do more detailed studies of the helmet like the graphics and material make up for it. In the end the Helmet was cut from the film so we did not get to far in this design but I still think there is something interesting about them." - Robert Simons

Here's what the Rhino suit looked like in the film:

Check out The Amazing Spider-Man 2concept art by Gregory Hill!

Update: All images have been removed at the request of Sony Pictures Entertainment. But enjoy the interview!

One character noticeably absent from The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is Mary Jane Watson. Shailene Woodley was cast as M.J. and scenes were filmed, but director Marc Webb decided to cut them out. Webb explained that he wanted to "streamline the story and focus on Peter and Gwen and their relationship." So what scenes were cut? We get two answers. Webb said, "There was one little scene at the beginning where she is next door and it took place right around the montage where he comes back and there was another little moment between Gwen and MJ." That's two scenes. But Woodbury said she shot "four scenes." So, what were in the other two scenes? I did an interview with illustrator Gregory Hill who was one of the artists for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and he told me about Mary Jane's role in the script and one scene that got cut.

Hill is a professional concept illustrator and art director who's worked on big budget projects like Journey 2: The Mysterious Island (2012), True Grit (2010) and The Smurfs (2011).

Read on to find out more about helping to design iconic sets like the Clocktower and learn more about one of the deleted scenes with Mary Jane Watson.

Click on the images to enlarge.

Maurice Mitchell: Thanks for your time Gregory. So tell us what you worked on for the film?
Gregory Hill: I actually touched just about every major set in the film, except for the Oscorp environments. I spent most time on the Clocktower design, both interior and exterior, where Spider-Man and Green Goblin have their big battle, and on the Osborn townhouse sets.

This is the final illustration of the tower. I did it very realistically. I built a 3D model of the tower, and then textured it in stone. I then rendered it using the same camera angle and lighting as in the photo of the 59th Street Bridge that is the environment for this illustration. Then I inserted the model render into the photo, and tweaked both the background and the model so that it appeared to be a seamless photo of a real place.

MM: Those were some beautiful sets. Every design has it's own challenges and rewards, but was there one design that you remember working on the most?
GH: It's funny. Sometimes you nail the look of a set right away, and other times it takes a long time to get it right. There are several reasons that illustrators work on most films these days. The most pragmatic reason seems to be that the Production Designer is so busy doing so many different things, that they really don't have time to sit down and draw themselves. So, they design the film by assembling a group of people to do the visualization for them. It may sound like a backward way of doing things, but that's the reality of major film production. So, as an illustrator, my job is to take the instruction of the designer, take their research and do my own, and then begin to mold the set into what the designer has in mind. I pass my work on to a set designer who does the drafting of the set (if it's being built on a stage), or to the VFX vendor (if the design is going to be partly or wholly CGI).
Necessity is definitely the mother of invention. The big necessity in film making is to get the work done on schedule. In a sense the calendar is the big problem solver. There is never enough time between when I begin conceiving a set and the time it needs to be finished and approved. So we all do the best we can within that time.

The Osborn clocktower was probably the hardest design to solve. This is a structure that sits within an area of land on Roosevelt Island, near the 59th Street Bridge. It is supposed to be all that's left of an older factory/power plant that belongs to the Osborn family. It's here that they're building a brand new kind of power plant that will help feed New York's vast energy needs. Of course none of it exists in real life.

My task was to design the exterior of the tower, figure out how large and tall it is (based to a great degree on the script requirements), and then define the architecture of the tower. The exterior was the easier of the two facets of the design... we based it on a couple of existing NY towers from about 1900, and then picked stonework that tied in to the existing stonework at the base of the bridge tower nearby. There was a built clocktower set, which was some 40' high... exterior of the tower's top, and interior with the clock faces, upper dome, and clockwork mechanism. While I was working on the interior, a set designer was working on the drawings for the various shops to use for construction, and the previz people were working on turning the scripted action into reality within the clocktower space. So we all interacted regularly. In the end, I had to move on to another set before the details of the interior were finalized... and then the set designer, the production designer, and the previz unit continued that challenge.

So, the answer is that the solution to a difficult set often evolves as different members of the art department get involved and bring their expertise to the problem.

This is not a big, major concept illustration but it is a favorite of mine. There's a small dog-leg street in New York's Chinatown called Doyer's Street. We were going to be decorating it in grand Chinatown style with banners, lanterns, and lots of neon and dressing. I was asked to create a hero look for the street. I am pretty proud of it.

MM: Your illustrations show a scene in a garage. Could you explain what was going on in that scene?
GH: In the script MJ and her father have recently moved in next door to Peter and his Aunt… He's run into her a few times, and seen that her father has a habit of getting drunk and treating MJ badly. If I remember right, the scene I illustrated has her dad going into the garage, and suddenly getting hoisted upside down from the rafters….where he meets Spider-Man. And gets a dressing down for how badly he treats his daughter. I think that's about the only MJ scene which was originally in the script… no, there was one other where she and Gwen briefly meet outside Peter's house.

There is a funny story to this too. After I finished the drawing, I had it on my desk as I moved on to something else. When I looked up there was this guy standing beside me, looking at the garage drawing, but he had it turned upside down. We exchanged "Hi's" and he left. Later I heard a major discussion going on around the desk of the set designer who was drafting the garage, and the designer said "It's all Greg Hill's fault." Turns out the guy looking at my drawing was Marc Webb, and he had asked that the garage set be built upside down.

Marc was looking at the sketch right side up first I assume…. and figuring out what would be CGI, etc. Then when he turned the drawing, he realized that he could basically shoot the scene with little or no CGI work if he built the set upside down… then Spidey could act naturally… even walk around. I never saw any footage so I don't know how they ended up doing it however. I assume they built the set upside down… which would be a lot cheaper than adding VFX to a whole scene.

MM: It's a shame those scenes got cut. Where can we see your work next?
GH: The odd part of making movies these days is that so much time passes between the making of a film, and the release of the film, that it's not always easy to say what's coming out next. I believe the next project coming out is the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot.

Here's the illustration I did for the scene where Peter has swept Gwen up and taken her to the top of the Manhattan Bridge. She was on her way to the airport to go to London… he literally stopped traffic by writing "I LOVE YOU" in webbing on the support cables of the Brooklyn Bridge. This was not the exact way it was scripted. First of all I had to "design" a believable web message and try it out on each of the East River bridges… and then figure out if it could be seen and make an impact from a neighboring bridge….. This was the most effective, and also featured a great view of downtown and New York harbor.

Official The Amazing Spider-Man 2 Synopsis
"We've always known that Spider-Man's most important battle has been within himself: the struggle between the ordinary obligations of Peter Parker and the extraordinary responsibilities of Spider-Man. But in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Peter Parker finds that a greater conflict lies ahead. It's great to be Spider-Man (Andrew Garfield). For Peter Parker, there's no feeling quite like swinging between skyscrapers, embracing being the hero, and spending time with Gwen (Emma Stone). But being Spider-Man comes at a price: only Spider-Man can protect his fellow New Yorkers from the formidable villains that threaten the city. With the emergence of Electro (Jamie Foxx), Peter must confront a foe far more powerful than he. And as his old friend, Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan), returns, Peter comes to realize that all of his enemies have one thing in common: OsCorp."

When designing the computer world of Tron Legacy, the sequel took one very important design cue for the film: light. Darren GIiford, the production designer, told NPR about the designs and you can read more below. Plus, see brilliant style guides by Dylan Cole that show some designs from the film. Cole is a professional matte and concept artist who's worked on Hollywood movies like The Transformers: Dark of the Moon (2003), Oz the Great and Powerful (2013) and I, Robot (2004) .

"The entire universe of Tron, in theory, comes from the mind of one man, which is Kevin Flynn, gives you an opportunity to design a complete universe that's seamless and cohesive, together as a unit."Gilford said, "So everything from costumes to sets, to vehicles, to architecture, to make it look like it's all tied together was the challenge.

"Everything you see in - once we're inside the computer, in that world, is theoretically from the, you know, the creator, who is Kevin Flynn. So, you know, to tie all this together, we really needed a design cue that would kind of wrap all this together, and light lines were the key for us and how we use light lines and the proportions of light lines and how they were rectilinear and then they would turn a corner but still keep a form, not get super organic."

The illustrations are from Dylan Cole with character illustrations by Phil Saunders and renders by Ben Procter.

Check out a trailer for the upcoming book Star Wars Storyboards: The Original Trilogy!

Every Friday I try and feature artwork from a classic of science fiction cinema or television. This week's "Flashback Friday" post is on the Star Wars Trilogy.

I never get tired of seeing storyboards and concept art from the Star Wars movies. But there's still so much left to see from the Lucasfilm vaults! Thankfully an upcoming book has some newly released artwork and it's amazing.

Here's the book description:
"Star Wars Storyboards: The Original Trilogy, edited by Lucasfilm's J.W. Rinzler, features the storyboards -- many never before seen -- from all three classic films.

"Coming from Abrams Books on May 13, 2014, Star Wars Storyboards: The Original Trilogy collects over 1,200 storyboards for the first time ever. As seen in this debut trailer, they were an essential part of the filmmaking process, helping visualize A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi -- including the Death Star trench run, the Battle of Hoth, and Luke Skywalker's final duel with Darth Vader and the Emperor.

"Star Wars Storyboards: The Original Trilogy features a foreword by Joe Johnston, an introduction by Nilo Rodis-Jamero, and exclusive commentary by Joe Johnston, Nilo Rodis-Jamero, Alex Tavoularis, Paul Huston, and Dave Carson."

The movie Transcendencehad a horrifying dream sequence by Dr. Will Caster's (Johnny Depp) wife Evelyn Caster (Rebecca Hall) and one of the artists that worked on the sequence is Jeff Julian.

Julian is a professional concept artist who's worked on Hollywood films like Superman Returns (2006), I Am Legend (2007) and X-Men: The Last Stand (2006).

Jeff Julian designed a lot of the nano tech and a dream sequence.

He said the dream sequence was pretty tough making nano tech on a human scale. It could have just looked like smoke or dust so he said giving it a unique look was "challenging." What he said made a huge difference was "showing that it had some organization or purpose."

The next films coming out for Jeff are Tom Cruise'Edge of Tomorrow (May 30th) and The Wachowskis'Jupiter Ascending (July 18th). See more of Jeff Julian's brilliant portfolio at http://www.jeffjulian.com

Dr. Will Caster (Johnny Depp) is the foremost researcher in the field of Artificial Intelligence, working to create a sentient machine that combines the collective intelligence of everything ever known with the full range of human emotions. However, in their attempt to destroy Will, they inadvertently become the catalyst for him to succeed—to be a participant in his own transcendence. For his wife Evelyn (Rebecca Hall) and best friend Max Waters (Paul Bettany), both fellow researchers, the question is not if they can…but if they should. Sylvain Despretz Hates His Awesome THE FIFTH ELEMENT Concept Art

The Fifth Element(1997) concept art by Sylvain Despretz

Check out The Fifth Elementconcept art by Sylvain Despretz!

Sylvain Despretz is a freelance director-screenwriter who was a professional concept and storyboard artist on Hollywood films like TRON: Legacy (2010), Mission: Impossible III (2006) and the unmade live-action Akiramovie. But he hated being an artist in the film industry. Even though he mentored with the great Mœbius and was called the "best in the business" he described himself as a "day laborer."

However, his artwork is still astonishingly good and he shares some of them on his website. Read on to get a peek into The Fifth Element designs and find out why Despretz says storyboard artists are like "waiters."

Click on the images to enlarge

"Storyboards, for anyone who wonders, are little drawings often used by the hundreds or the thousands, like a rough and tumble comic strip that depicts part or the whole of a movie." Despretz told The Whispered, "It is used ahead of filming to plan and budget, and mostly to help the director prepare the shots mentally. At best, I was a film student who got paid for his long internship.

"I did this to gain proximity, but I dropped further and further away, so close to my goal. I was working next to some of the greatest living movie directors: Sidney Lumet, Roman Polanski, Ridley Scott, Tim Burton, David Fincher, and many more lesser known giants. And the closer I stood, the smaller I had to make myself, like a mouse trying to steal a piece of cheese. It was surreal after a while. Then I said, 'this is your life, man: a glorified waiter.' Just as in politics, proximity to power is not power; quite the opposite in fact."

He longed to get out of the industry saying, "I had a good run, but the people who hired me were always keeping me in my place, subtly and kindly, but undoubtedly. It was a bit labyrinthine, and I did get lost in the tunnels for a while, because once you do a job, and do it well, getting out of it becomes sticky." Finally, he got a job directing commercials and feature films and hasn't looked back.

Well, we can still look back at his time developing artwork for directors like Ridley Scott and Luc Besson.

See Behind-the-Scenes Photos of ALIEN Concept Artist H.R. Giger

See behind-the-scenes photos of Alien with H.R. Giger.

The brilliant artist and concept designer Hans Rudolf "Ruedi" Giger has died at 74. H.R. Giger was born February 5, 1940 and died on May 12, 2014. He was a Swiss surrealist painter, sculptor and set designer who's worked on classic films like Batman Forever (1995), the unmade Dune by Jodorowsky and Species (1995). He won an Academy Award for "Best Achievement for Visual Effects," along with the special effects team, for his design work on the film Alien in 1980. He was born in Chur, Graubünden, Switzerland to a chemist father who encouraged him to abandon art as a "breadless profession." Because of this he got an architectural and industrial design degree and this strongly influenced his bio-mechanical designs. While Giger's work is legendary, his most widely known work was for the design of the creature in Alien which influenced the designs of all other interpretations.

Whenever we lose a great artist it's always hard to sum up his life in one short post. So, instead of focusing on his amazing artwork I thought I'd focus on his methodology. Here are some behind the scenes photos from the Alien film in 1979. He outlined the extremely difficult process of working on the film in his amazing book Giger's Alien. They show the master at work and you can see the intensity in his eyes.

"We are absolutely heartbroken over the loss of this loving husband, selfless friend, and supremely talented artist...In a career with so many star-studded highlights, it is only natural that many have mentioned his world famous brainchild, ALIEN, since the news broke this morning. It was certainly a creation which Giger prized, much as he took great pride in his collaboration with myriads of music industry and film artists, since he began his glorious journey as a world class painter, sculptor and designer. Our priority now is to support his wife Carmen Maria Scheifele Giger, and the extended Giger family, and ask that you respect our privacy during this time, so we may mourn the loss of our beloved 'Hans Ruedi'."

The new Godzilla movie comes out tomorrow and Shock Till You Dropgot some concept art from the bookGodzilla: The Art of Destruction that show what Godzilla almost looked like. Director Gareth Edwards said that a lot of thought went into the creature's look. He said they "tried to sharpen and straighten his face and his body so it's less rounded. Because I find if something looks too round, you could get into Muppet territory — it could get too cutesy." They were also inspired by things like birds of prey, Komodo dragons and the Skeksis from The Dark Crystal (1982).

Godzilla (1998concept art by Patrick Tatopoulos
Check out Godzilla1998concept art by Patrick Tatopoulos and more!

Every Friday I try and feature artwork from a classic of science fiction cinema or television. This week's "Flashback Friday" post is on Godzilla(1998). I know it's not a "classic" film, but it's the Godzilla movie everyone's talking about these days.

Gareth Edward's Godzillaopens today and promises to be a huge hit. On the other hand, back in 1998, the last American Godzilla movie bombed. The film's main creature designer was Patrick Tatopoulos and he talked about his inspiration for Godzilla to EON Magazine. "Dean and Roland came to me and said that the next film they were doing was Godzilla and they wanted me to do the creature," Tatopoulos explained. At first he was disappointed because he was transitioning to a job as a production designer but then he thought "My first reaction was disappointment, but then later I said to myself, 'what are you thinking, you have the opportunity to redesign this insane icon that's been in Japan forever. This is a great chance for me.'"

Patrick Tatoupolus is a French production designer and concept artist who's worked on Hollywood films like Underworld (2003), Stargate(1994) and Super Mario Bros(1993).

Click on the images to enlarge

He was only given two directives: it couldn't look like a man in a suit and it had to be fast. Really fast. "Once the creature was fully designed I started to look at animals like iguanas and crocodiles: iguanas for the neck movement, that fleshy part of the neck, and crocodiles for the head." Tatopoulos said, "The way the teeth are actually sitting outside, I didn't want to have any lip movement, I wanted the teeth to be very solid. And if you look at a crocodile, you know it's alive-you don't need to see it move."

Here's some artwork from the film. I don't know who all the artists are, but you get the idea.

See more of Tatoupolus' official website is www.tatopoulosstudios.net. There's nothing up there anymore but it's worth keeping an eye on since his portfolio was extensive.

One of the big set pieces in the film Star Trek Into Darkness is the massive unmarked Federation Dreadnought-class starship USS Vengeance also known as the "Dark Enterprise." It's "twice the size, ten times the firepower, and three times the speed" of any other star ship. "Unlike most Federation vessels, it's built solely for combat." Impressive. Two of the artists that helped design this masterpiece of Federation engineering are Kasra Farahani and Tex Kadonga.

Tetsuo 'Tex' Kadonaga is a professional 3D modeler, art director and production designer who's worked on big budget films like Night at the Museum (2006), The 6th Day (2000) and The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift (2006). Kasra Farahani is a professional concept illustrator, art director and production designer who's worked on Hollywood movies like Avatar(2008), Spider-Man 3 (2007) and andthe unmadeBioshock film.

Check out Godzilla (2014) concept art by Warren Flanagan!

I've shared some amazing images from the Godzilla (2014) artbook before, but now here's more from one of the artists. The artbook Godzilla: The Art of Destruction is a visual feast and well worth the money. Giant Freakin' Robotsays, "Even the cover of this book is freaking epic." One of the artists that is featured in the book is Warren Flanagan and he was kind enough to send me exclusive concept art from the film. It features designs of the abandoned "Q Zone," Brody's apartment, MUTO designs and more.

Warren Flanagan is a professional concept artist who's worked on major motion pictures like Man of Steel (2013), Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011) and X-Men: the Last Stand (2006).

Check out Masters of the Universe (1987) concept art by William Stout!

Every Friday I try and feature artwork from a classic of science fiction cinema or television. This week's "Flashback Friday" post is on Masters of the Universe (1987).

There are very few movies based on toys that are successful. G.I. Joe is the exception rather than the rule. One film that was based on the insanely popular Masters of the Universe toy line continued the trend of unpopular films. But the director, Gary Goddard, had lofty ambitions. Instead of making a rip-off of Conan the Barbarian (which the toy line actually was) he set out to create something similar to the Jack Kirby Marvel comics like "The New Gods." Goddard told artist John Byrne,
"Your comparison of the film to Kirby’s New Gods was not far off. In fact, the storyline was greatly inspired by the classic Fantastic Four/Doctor Doom epics, The New Gods and a bit of Thor thrown in here and there. I intended the film to be a 'motion picture comic book,' though it was a tough proposition to sell to the studio at the time. 'Comics are just for kids,' they thought. They would not allow me to hire Jack Kirby who I desperately wanted to be the conceptual artist for the picture…"

We know Jack Kirby didillustrations for a few movies, like Lords of Light, but he's mostly know for his comic book work. While Ralph McQuarrie worked on the film briefly, it was the production designer William Stout who created the final look.

Stout is a professional production designer and concept artist who's worked on classic films like Conan the Barbarian (1982), Pan's Labyrinth (2006) and The Prestige (2005).

William Stout was originally hired to storyboard the film and transitioned to concept design but, when production designer Geoffrey Kirkland left, he got the job.
