Check out Robot and Frankconcept art by Castelli Models and Alterian Inc.!

Robot and Frank (2012) tells the story about an old man (Frank Langella) who's forced to live with a caretaker robot and makes him his partner in several heists. It's quirky, but fun and touching. The independent film won the "Alfred P. Sloan Prize" at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival. I'm fascinated by the simplicity of the film and enjoyed seeing these designs of what the robot almost looked like.

In an article for The New York Times, director Jake Schreier talked about the designs for the film. “We had been looking at a lot of caretaker robots that were being made in Japan and we wanted to keep our robot mostly in that style,” Schreier said about the design of the VGC-60L, the main robot featured in the film, and voiced by Peter Sarsgaard. “There are all sorts of ones that have that humanoid, but boxy look, so it’s relatable, but doesn’t look too human and creepy,”

VGC-60L

“Robot developers have to do the same thing that we’re doing when we make a movie, which is figure out how to make a character that is relatable,” he said. “The design goes into creating something that people would have affection for.”

Mr. Darcy

“Everything’s not going to be perfect in the future, there’s going to be a lot of wonky stuff. So while I think Mr. Darcy is very adorable, he doesn’t work all that well,” said Mr. Schreier.

Shocking TERMINATOR SALVATION Schwarzenegger Terminator Concept Designs by Victor Martinez

Check out Terminator Salvationconcept art by Victor James Martinez!

There were a lot of rumors if Arnold Schwarzenegger would have a cameo in the fourth Terminator movie. He did appear briefly as the T-800 android using CGI. Using the magic of CGI he looked exactly the same as he did in 1983 thanks to a life mask created for the first film by Stan Winston Studios. John Rosengrant, the animatronics and special makeup effects supervisor for Terminator Salvation said, "We dug out our original cast from the first Terminator movie, and created a new, cleaned-up, properly textured life-size bust." They also used extensive reference photos of Schwarzenegger from 1983 for the finer details like the eyebrows and skin tone. Unfortunately, despite the amount of love and work involved, the result left audiences unhappy.  But, it might have been a more powerful look if designs by artists like Victor James Martinez had been used.

Martinez is a professional concept artist who's worked on big budget movies like Real Steel(2011)Avatar (2009)and Transformers (2007).

X-Men Origins: Wolverine storyboards by Tim Burgard

Check out X-Men Origins: Wolverinestoryboards by Tim Burgard!

In the opening of X-Men Origins: Wolverine there's a montage of Logan (Hugh Jackman) and Victor Creed (Liev Schreiber) fighting in all the major wars since the Civil War. The section that follows them in the 1800s only lasts a few seconds. We mainly just see Logan getting shot at. But storyboards by Tim Burgard shows it could have been a longer scene with him popping claws and taking out soldiers. Tim said it's one of many revisions of the opening montage. Check out the storyboards below.

Timothy Burgard is a professional illustrator and storyboard artist who's worked on major motion pictures like Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011), Thor (2011)andX-Men: The Last Stand (2006).

In case you don't remember it, here's the original opening war montage.

Exclusive Interview: Andy Park Talks About Working on THOR: THE DARK WORLD Concept Art and Marvel Films

Thor: The Dark World(2013) concept art by Andy Park

Check out Thor: The Dark Worldconcept art by Andy Park!

When talking about Thor 2 Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige said, "Thor will go off into a new adventure." He did and Thor: The Dark World continues that adventure across the Nine Realms. The film is a blockbuster hit and the Blu-Ray for the film is on sale on Februray 25th. Part of the success of the films is the breathtaking visuals that meld classic comic book style and modern movie looks. One of the many talented artists working on the film is Andy Park.

Park is a professional concept artist who's worked on (Hollywood/big budget/major) (movies/films) like Iron Man 3(2013), Marvel's the Avengers (2012) and the upcoming Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015).

Read on to find out how a former Marvel comic book artist became a Marvel comic book movie artist.

Maurice Mitchell: Thanks for your time Andy. So, what's it like working on Marvel films?
Andy Park: It's a dream job for me. I'm an '80s kid that grew up on comic books, specifically Marvel Comics. I got hooked on Iron Man when he built his new suit back in Iron Man #200. And I got to design the film version of that suit in Iron Man 3. It's crazy! And I never thought we'd ever get to see a live-action Avengers movie during my lifetime. So to actually work on the film is beyond my childhood dreams.

Marvel Studios is experiencing a golden age of film right now. With the initial success of Iron Man, the subsequent success of the following films- Hulk, Iron Man 2, Captain America, and Thor, and then the mega-success in The Avengers, it has changed everything when it comes to movies.

The studios in Hollywood are all copying the Marvel model now, or at least scrambling to. I'm honored to be working with such passionate and talented people.

MM: It is an honor Andy. Right up there with Star Wars. How did your comic book work influence your film work?
AP: Before I became a concept artist for film and video games I was a comic book artist for about 10 years. I worked mainly for Image Comics and Marvel Comics. Those years definitely influence the work I do now on these films. Because I'm a fan of these characters I want to respect their source material.

My job is to honor their origins but to make it work in the current Marvel Cinematic Universe look and feel. Sometimes the translation is pretty easy and other times (probably most of the times) it's a tall task. But the beauty of Marvel's Visual Development Department (headed by Ryan Meinerding and Charlie Wen) is that we all come from different backgrounds and therefore bring something new and fresh to the table. I look at my role as one of the "fanboys" creating concepts for these movies. So my designs will reflect that more often than not.

MM: It's great to have another "fanboy" in there! So, what was the biggest challenge working on Thor 2 versus Thor?
AP: I actually didn't do much work on the first Thor. I came in on the tail end of that movie as well as Captain America: The First Avenger, and I was mainly brought on to start work on The Avengers (and the movies to follow).

Out of the eight films I've worked on at Marvel Studios thus far, Thor: The Dark World was definitely the most challenging. The main reason was because of the Dark Elves. It took forever to land a final look for this race. That task was given to myself, Charlie Wen, and Justin Sweet. Between the 3 of us we did hundreds of concept paintings exploring the gamut of ideas available to us.

But sometimes no matter how beautiful a painting is or how creative an idea may be, at the end of the day it's the vision of the director and producers that must be satisfied.  And as any experienced concept artist knows, that is not always an easy task. The good thing is that I have so many paintings that I'm so proud of- rejected or not.

Thanks for your time Andy and we're looking forward to the next adventure.

"The short answer is, I think they can tell we give a ****."Arrow series lead Stephen Amell told Comic Riffs when they asked him why the show is so popular. "To put it bluntly, they can tell that we care. They can tell that we're protective over the script."

Last week's episode "Heir to the Demon" had an impressive 2.75 million viewers and continues the trend the show has of creating dynamic and powerful characters. Two highlights of this season have been the final reveal of two characters from the comics: Deathstroke (Manu Bennett) and Nyssa Al Ghul (Katrina Law).

"In the Green Arrow universe, [Deathstroke] is the archnemesis. He is number one" Amell says. "Manu Bennett has just done a wonderful job encapsulating Slade Wilson, and when [an Arrow and Deathstroke battle] happens - and I don't know when it's going to happen, but when that moment happens - I hope the fans will enjoy it as much as I will."

One of the concept illustrators on the show is Andy Poon and he recently shared some of the designs for the show on his blog. Poon is a professional concept artist who's worked on network television shows like Smallville, and Slugterra.

Nyssa Al Ghul
"Nyssa, the less famous daughter of Ras Al' Ghul showed up in the latest episode of Arrow, titled 'Heir to the Demon." Andy said, "I was pretty excited about working on her. One, shes the daughter of Ras, whose [name] has been popping up here and there through out the season, and [she's] a major Batman villain. Two, she has never been [realized] in any medium besides the comic. I actually had to look up her history and who she is. I'm very familiar with Talia, but not Nyssa so it actually made it easier because I don't have an image already stuck in my head of what she looks like.

"I was working closely with costume designer Maya Mani of course, especially this one we wanted to use alot more texture and different elements that give her a bit more eastern flavor. I think she looks awesome on screen, she's bada** but also very elegant and sexy, its a good break from the more sleek, clean and realistic combat type modern villains. She's one of my new favorite characters on the show that I worked on because she has that fantastical element while still feels realistic."

Here's what she looked like on the show:

Deathstroke 2.0
"I've been waiting very impatiently for this one, cause its a pretty important one for me." Poon said on his blog, "The new badder and improve Deathstroke returns in the latest episode of Arrow 'Blindspot.' I was very excited when [I] find out that I get to do a new version of him, but also comes the burden that Arkham Origin [which] just came out and their Deathstroke is BAD-A**!!! What to do??

"I looked up every single version of him that has been done before to find the core design language of what makes him Deathstroke. Also I want to make sure I'm doing something that is different even if it is in small subtle details. Almost everything has been done... so the only strong direction is to stick to the style of the show and ground him. The Arkham version is super cool but has a lot of more fantastic elements that I can stay away from, his armors are almost [albeit] medieval inspired. I was also excited when Costume Designer Maya Mani told me that they are finally open to more hard body armor and even some colors other than the black and greys!

"We've talked about that it should not be a completely new suit the he built, but more like an upgraded version of Slade, so I took a lot of the Island Slade elements and incorporated into the new Deathstroke. I know it will be compare to the Arkham one, but I think we found a good balance that it is cool enough but realistic enough so I'm not so worried by the end of it."

Here's what he looked like in the episode.

Batman & Robin(1997) storyboard

Check out Batman & Robinset design and storyboards by Dawn Brown & Timothy Burgard!

Update: Tim just let me know that some of those aren't his boards. I'm not sure who the artist is though.

I'm going to start off this post by saying Batman & Robin is so campy it's terrible. Bad in a fun way, but terrible. That said, it's the most visually arresting Batman movies ever made. So, the design is really impressive to me. Two of the talented artists working on the film were Dawn Brown and Timothy Burgard.

Dawn Brown and Timothy Burgard are professional concept artists and set designers who've worked on Hollywood films like The Hunger Games: Catching Fire(2013)and Rise of the Planet of the Apes(2011).

Unused ALIENS Concept Art by James Cameron and Stan Winston Reveal How the Queen Almost Looked

Check out Aliensconcept art by James Cameron and Stan Winston!

Every Friday, I try and share artwork from a classic of science fiction movies or television. This week's "Flashback Friday" post is on Aliens (1986).

Before the Alien Queen became the "B*itch" she went through a ton of design changes. Here's a quick history of the designs starting with a little sketch in the 1980s to the final terrifying design.

Mother
Back in the 1980s, director James Cameron started working on a movie called Mother about "a  female genetically engineered creature attempting to ensure the survival of its young." He had created a drawing of a six-limbed panther called a “Skraath,” or “Skraith,” for a movie called  Labyrinth and tried to reuse the design. Neither project happened, but the design went on to be used for the "Thanator" in  Avatar. The theme of two women fighting  was also a core concept behind the final scene in Aliens.

The basic design inspired the initial look of the six-limbed Alien Queen.

Stan Winston Collaboration
When Cameron started working on Aliens he brought several renderings of the Queen Alien to his preliminary design meetings at Stan Winston Studio. Winston said, "Right from the start, Jim had a concept of the Alien Queen in the back of his head. In fact, when we first began talking about the project he showed me the beautiful rendering he had done of it which I liked immediately."

The two began brainstorming ideas and Winston did some renderings of his own.

Inspiration by H.R. Giger
In the end, the team decided to stay closer to Cameron's original designs and began incorporating elements of the original Alien Xenomorph designs by H.R. Giger. The artist was not asked to return and help design the sequel. Cameron said they're designs are "mainly a reprise of Mr. Giger's design." He also said, they "tried to be consistent with Giger's motifs, but not necessarily enslaved to it."

The original design paintings inspired various items in the Queen's look from the hand...

 to the neck.

Here's the final look of the Alien Queen.

The result was well-received by audiences and even those who worked on the first film. Even Giger said, "It's all beautifully done, everything, the designs and the way they're executed. The Alien Queen is also nice. She's a bit smaller in the face than my alien but my basic design was very well studied. She was frighteningly well animated."

Check out Star Wars VIIconcept art!

This week Lucasfilm posted the first official production photos from Star Wars VII and fans could make out blurry concept art images in the background.

It's safe to say these aren't spoilers, but you never know.

Here's the original image:

Here are some blurry highlights:

The most obvious one is the Millenium Falcon.

Looks like a mountainous landscape like Tatooine or a new location.

Some books on the table including one with Yoda on the cover. Could he be back for the sequel?

Now notice some images in the background including one of Obi Wan Kenobi (upper right).

Finally, we can see the corner of a series of images. Maybe storyboards?

What do you think of the concept art? If you've seen Star Trek: Deep Space Ninewhat did you think?

Official Star Trek: Deep Space NineSummary
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (DS9) focuses on the 24th century adventures of Captain Benjamin Sisko on space station Deep Space 9, an outpost situated near the mouth of a stable wormhole on the far reaches of explored space. Although Sisko commands Deep Space 9, the station actually belongs to the inhabitants of nearby Bajor, who requested Starfleet’s protective presence after Bajoran freedom fighters put an end to the brutal Cardassian occupation of their world. Approximately a sixth of the station’s 300 permanent residents are Starfleet personnel; there is also a sizable Bajoran militia presence. The rest of Deep Space 9’s inhabitants are civilians, most of whom work in the station’s Promenade, a kind of indoor marketplace. Initially, Sisko’s mandate from Starfleet was to protect Bajor and the station from any hostiles who ventured into the area. But with the discovery of the nearby wormhole—a shortcut through space that leads directly to the uncharted Gamma quadrant—Sisko’s mandate has expanded exponentially, as the region becomes the gateway to all manner of visitors, both friendly and extremely hostile.

RoboCop (2014)concept art by Igor Knezevic
Check out RoboCop (2014)concept art and interview with Igor Knezevic!

The controversial RoboCop remake is finally here and, in it's opening day, was the number one movie in the U.S. and Canada making a total worldwide gross of $100,283,627 so far. One of the many talented artists working on the film is Igor Knezevic. Knezevic is an award-winning professional designer and architect specialized in creating 3D environments, concept designs and product designs who's worked on big budget films like X-Men: First Class (2011), In Time (2011) and R.I.P.D. (2013).

Maurice Mitchell: Thanks for doing this interview Igor! You mainly worked on prop designs for the RoboCop remake. What kind of props did you help design?
Igor Knezevic: I worked mainly on hi-tech table / machine assembly design used to assemble and disassemble RoboCop in a pivotal scene in the film. It was a combination hi-tech medical table into which RoboCop is "plugged". Then, the whole thing can split apart and disappear into the floor.

Then, I also worked on designs for some "street furniture"... meaning, your usual street objects, benches, bus stops, street lights, ATM machines, trashcans - but updated to about 40 years into the future. Some of that ended up in the flick - some didn't.

MM: Working on a big blockbuster film can be challenging, but was there a design you found the most challenging?
IK: Surely this "assembly" lab contraption was the big one. As I worked on it, I immediately started doing previs of how it could move so that body parts can be detached and cleared away without hitting each other. I knew that the prop will be actually made for real via CNC machining and then augmented in CGI - so there needed to be a degree of reality to it. It wasn't pure a CG thing. So I worked in 3D from the start.

MM: They're really amazing stuff Igor. So, where can we see your work next?
IK: Next one coming up is Wachowskis'Jupiter Ascending where I worked on costume designs. Also...I recently wrapped up with some work on Terminator: Genesis.

Check out Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan concept art by Ken Ralston!

Every Friday I try and feature artwork from a classic of science fiction cinema or television. This week's "Flashback Friday" post is on Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982)

The most memorable scene in Wrath of Khan is when Khan puts a creature, known as a Ceti Eel, in Chekov's helmet to take control of his mind. Originally the mind-control creatures attached to the back of the neck, but producer Robert Sallin decided the creatures should borrow into the victim's ear. Ken Ralston was the visual effects supervisor on Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan and drew several designs for the creature. The designs worked and test audiences were so horrified that they had to cut the close-up shots out for the theatrical release.

Kenneth "Ken" Ralston is a professional concept\storyboard artist who's worked on major films like Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope (1977), Men in Black II (2002) and Back to the Future (1985).

In the RoboCop remake he drives a stropped down Kawasaki Z-1000 instead of the Ford Taurus. But, originally, he was supposed to drive a more futuristic bike. Martin Whist, the production designer, explained, "Our bump into the future is very little. We didn't want to have elements in there that were purely sci-fi."

Concept artist Tim Flattery shared some early designs with ComicBookMovie.com.
