Check out exclusive Thor: The Dark Worldstoryboards by Tom Nelson!

The movie Thor: The Dark World is a huge success making over $600 million, but it's true success may lie in it's special effects. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has Thor: The Dark World on its shortlist of potential nominees for the Oscar for"Best Visual Effects." If it gets the nomination, it'll be the second Oscar nominated Marvel film after The Avengers.

Part of it's success is due to the tireless efforts of the special effects teams working with an army of pre-production artists. One such artist is Tom Nelson.

Nelson sent me four exclusive sets of storyboards: Asgardian prison attack by Kurse, the Dark Elf ship crash into Asgard and the Thor and Melkeith Fight.

Tom Nelson is a professional storyboard artist who's worked on big budget movies like Thor(2011)and Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian (2008).

The trailer for Transformers 4 Age of Extinction is coming at the Super Bowl, but let's look back at the least successful of the Michael Bay Transformers film. All of the robot designs for the movies are stellar. Nizzi hosted some great concept art including alternate versions of Megatron robot designs and The Fallen concept designs on his site and I'm sharing a few. Part of the marketing tie-in for the movie was Burger King’s "Transform Your Way" scratch-and-win game, which gave away a bunch of prizes including $1 million cash. In the hilarious commercials, the broiler transforms into the Kingbot who gives the winner the money. Here's one of the commercials:

There are some very strong women in Thor The Dark World like Jane Foster Lady Sif and Frigga. But one strong female character that almost made it into the film is Brunhilde the Valkyrie. Concept art from Josh Nizzi's website shows what she could have looked like.

He also shared some designs for a Frost Giant, Durok the Demolisher, Mangog and others.

Josh Nizzi is a professional concept artist who's worked on Hollywood films like Transformers: Rise of the Fallen (2011) The Wolverine (2013)andThe Amazing Spider-Man(2012)

For those not familiar with the character of Valkyrie here's what Wikipedia says:
The character first appeared in The Avengers #83 (December 1970) and has become a mainstay of the superhero team known as the Defenders. An Asgardian by birth, Valkyrie, also known by her real name Brunnhilde, was selected by Odin to lead the Valkyrior. Among her other aliases are Barbara Denton-Norriss, Samantha Parrington, Sian Bowen, and Annabelle Riggs who all were host bodies to the spirit of Brunnhilde. Samantha Parrington, a previous host of Brunnhilde, later received Valkyrie's powers and became a member of the Defenders herself. An ally and one-time love interest of Thor, she was ranked 65th in Comics Buyer's Guide's "100 Sexiest Women in Comics" list. - Wikipedia

Dark City(1998) concept art by Peter Pound
Check out Dark Cityconcept art and storyboards by Peter Pound!

Every Friday I feature artwork from a classic of science fiction cinema. This week's "Flashback Friday" post is on Dark City (1998)

I'll never forget watching Dark City for the first time. I knew nothing beyond the image of the clock on the poster and the mystery had me spellbound. Dark City is a brilliant film. But, unfortunately, it came out the same year as The Matrix and people unfairly compared the two. While Matrix is an action film, Dark City explores what it means to be human and how we define ourselves by our memories. The film is a cinematic feast for the eyes, especially the final act. This isn't a surprise because, along with Alex Proyas' unique visual style, concept artist Patrick Tatopoulos is one of the production designers. One of the artists working with them was Peter Pound.

Peter Pound is a professional concept, storyboard artist and production designer who's worked on major films like Babe (1995) andhe's also an accomplished painter, illustrator, sculptor and model maker

Spider-Man(2002) concept art by Jim Martin

Check out Spider-Manconcept art by Jim Martin!

Did you know Doctor Octopus was almost in Sam Raimi's first Spider-Man film?

In Spider-Man (2002), the villain was Green Goblin (Wilem Dafoe) and in Spider-Man 2 (2004) the villain was Dr. Octopus (Alfred Molina), but I found some concept illustrations for the first film that included Dr. Octopus. So what gives? Artist Jim Martin confirmed that he was "later taken out of the story and put in the sequel." One draft of the script had both Green Goblin and Doctor Octopus as villains, but Doc Ock was removed in Scott Rosenberg's rewrite to simplify the story.

Jim Martin is a professional concept artist who's worked on major projects like The Matrix Reloaded (2003), Captain America: The First Avenger (2011) and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (1995).

Over the weekend Gravity pulled in some big award nominations at the Golden Globes. The movie was nominated for Best Motion Picture – Drama, Best Actress in Drama (Sandra Bullock) and Best Original Score. Alfonso Cuarón won the Golden Globe Award for Best Directorand it's almost a fact that the film will be nominated for Oscars.

The film is stunning critics with comments that echo Matt Zoller Seitz, who said, "Alfonso Cuarón's Gravity, about astronauts coping with disaster, is a huge and technically dazzling film and that the film's panoramas of astronauts tumbling against starfields and floating through space station interiors are at once informative and lovely."

One of the many artists who helped Cuarón achieve his vision is Julian Caldow. Caldow is a professional concept and storyboard artist who's worked on blockbuster movies like X-Men: First Class(2011), Prometheus(2012)and Batman(1989).

ARROW Concept Art of Oliver Queen and Brother Blood's Mask by Any Poon

Check out Arrowconcept art by Andy Poon!

This season of Arrow has brought some major changes and one of the biggest is that Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) finally wears a mask. It's not exactly like the domino mask that Green Arrow wears in the comics, but it's pretty close. One of the concept illustrators on the show is Andy Poon and he recently shared some of the many looks they considered for the mask on his blog. Poon is a professional concept artist who's worked on network television shows like Smallville, and Slugterra.

Oliver Queen's Mask
"Conceptually, it was something we wanted to do because Oliver himself is evolving as the Arrow–  from vigilante to hero, sort of from Arrow to Green Arrow — and we wanted to see that progression in his costume as well," executive producer Andrew Kreisberg to EW. "As Oliver is embracing being a hero, being a hero means stepping out of the dark and being more of a symbol, so he has to stake steps to conceal his identity more." He also added:  "It’s going to allow the Arrow to interact with people who don’t know his identity in a much more organic way than having him constantly keep his head down."

Brother Blood
Plus, he also shared some designs for Brother Blood's (Kevin Alejandro) terrifying mask. On his blog he said, "Like Bronze tiger, I did not have too much knowledge about him, so I had to do my research. He was a Vampire / cult leader in the comic books, but I like the direction they are going for on Arrow. I did quite a few versions of the mask, and we ended up going for a simpler version."

Official Arrow Synopsis
"After a violent shipwreck, billionaire playboy Oliver Queen was missing and presumed dead for five years before being discovered alive on a remote island in the Pacific. When he returns home to Starling City, his devoted mother Moira, much-beloved sister Thea, and best friend Tommy welcome him home, but they sense Oliver has been changed by his ordeal on the island. While Oliver hides the truth about the man he's become, he desperately wants to make amends for the actions he took as the boy he was. Most particularly, he seeks reconciliation with his former girlfriend, Laurel Lance. As Oliver reconnects with those closest to him, he secretly creates the persona of Arrow – a vigilante – to right the wrongs of his family, fight the ills of society, and restore Starling City to its former glory. By day, Oliver plays the role of a wealthy, carefree and careless philanderer he used to be – flanked by his devoted chauffeur/bodyguard, John Diggle – while carefully concealing the secret identity he turns to under cover of darkness. However, Laurel's father, Detective Quentin Lance, is determined to arrest the vigilante operating in his city. Meanwhile, Oliver's own mother, Moira, knows much more about the deadly shipwreck than she has let on – and is more ruthless than he could ever imagine. The series stars Stephen Amell as Oliver Queen, Colin Donnell as Tommy, Katie Cassidy as Laurel Lance, David Ramsey as John Diggle, Willa Holland as Thea Queen, with Susanna Thompson as Moira Queen and Paul Blackthorne as Detective Quentin Lance."

Check out The Man Who Killed Don Quixoteconcept art by David Warren!

The story of director Terry Gilliam's attempts to make a film adaptation of Don Quixote sounds like an adventure all of it's own. He's attempted to make his film seven times and every time either flash floods, illness, cast scheduling issues or failed financing killed the project. His first disastrous attempt at filming in 1998 only lasted five days and was chronicled in the documentary Lost in La Mancha (2002).

The Man Who Killed Don Quixote is a science fiction film project directed and co-written by Terry Gilliam, based on the novel Don Quixoteby Miguel de Cervantes about a Spanish knight who dreams of fighting giants alongside his friend Sancho Panza. He planned to update the story by adding a modern day character, named Toby Grisoni, who travels back in time to replace Sancho Panza.

This past week he shared the first piece of concept art from the restarted project on his Facebook page saying, "Dreams of Don Quixote have begun again. Dave Warren has started doodling. Will we get the old b*****d back on his horse this year? Human sacrifices welcomed. Stay tuned."

David Warren has worked with Gilliam on a number of projects, including The Imaginarium of Dr Parnassus, and told the site Dreams, "He's very good on references, so you can get in that way, and of course he draws - the essential shorthand of design. He wouldn't admit this, but you can get inside his mindset. We've all been watching Python and his movies for years - so you know you should go for extreme references."

Dave Warren is a professional art director and production designer who's worked Hollywood movies like The Zero Theorem (2013), Hugo (2011)and Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street(2007).

Every Friday I try and feature artwork from a classic of science fiction cinema or television. This week's "Flashback Friday" post is on Armageddon (1998).

The Michael Bay disaster film Armageddon got mixed reviews but was the highest-grossing film of 1998. In fact, it made more than Steven Spielberg's Saving Private Ryan. It was also nominated for four Oscars including "Best Visual Effects." One of the artists that helped make those spectacular visuals possible was storyboard artist Robbie Consing. He shared a storyboard sequence from the film on his IMDb page.

Today Guillermo del Toro is a legend for films like Pan's Labyrinth and Pacific Rim, but his first Hollywood film is the sci-fi horror film Mimic.  It was perfect as his first studio film since he says he has "a sort of a fetish for insects, clockwork, monsters, dark places, and unborn things." The main creatures were large genetically modified insects that adapted to look like people. One of the artists that helped shape the look of the creatures was Ty Ellingson.

TyRuben "Ty" Ellingson is a professional concept and storyboard artist who's worked on Hollywood classics  like Jurassic Park (1993), Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope (1977)and Avatar (2009).

The new series of Spider-Man movies has taken over from Sam Raimi's films and The Amazing Spider-Man 2comes out this year. The second Spider-Man sequel stirred controversy with it's portrayal of Harry Osborn (nicknamed "New Goblin") and Venom, but the visuals are undeniably stunning. For example, Entertainment Weekly called "Sandman" one of their 10 greatest CG characters of 2007.

One of the artists on the film, James Carson, created some thrilling and dynamic concept art for the film of Sandman robbing a bank, building a sand castle for this daughter, New Goblin props, set designs and more. So I thought I'd share some of my favorites. Insightful SUPERMAN: FLYBY Concept Art by Jim Martin

Check out Superman: Flyby concept art by Jim Martin!

Before the blockbuster hit Man of Steel there were many failed attempts to bring Superman back to the screen after the debacle of Superman IV: The Quest for Peace. One, known as Superman: Flyby, was a reboot written by J.J. Abrams and was supposed to be directed by McG. It had some major changes to the Superman mythos. For example, in this version, Krypton was not completely destroyed. Kal-El left Krypton to escape his evil uncle Ty-Zor and his father ended up in a Kryptonian prison.

While we'll never know exactly what the film would have looked like, concept artist Jim Martin shared some illustrations on his site that show what some of the major plot points could have looked like. I contacted him and he walked me through some of the designs.

Jim Martin is a professional concept artist who's worked on Hollywood blockbusters like Spider-Man (2002), The Matrix Reloaded (2003) and Captain America: The First Avenger (2011).

You might notice that this illustration is eerily similar to the Superman Returns poster.

What do you think of the concept art\storyboards? Do you think Superman: Flyby could have been good?

Unofficial Superman: Flyby Description
Superman: Flyby was an origin story that included Krypton besieged by a civil war between Jor-El and his corrupt brother, Kata-Zor. Before Kata-Zor sentences Jor-El to prison, Kal-El is launched to Earth to fulfill a prophecy. Adopted by Jonathan and Martha Kent, he forms a romance with Lois Lane in the Daily Planet. However, Lois is more concerned with exposing Lex Luthor, written as a government agent obsessed with UFO phenomena. Clark reveals himself to the world as Superman, bringing Kata-Zor's son, Ty-Zor, and three other Kryptonians to Earth. Superman is defeated and killed, and visits Jor-El (who committed suicide on Krypton while in prison) in Kryptonian heaven. Resurrected, he returns to Earth and defeats the four Kryptonians, while the script ends with Superman off to Krypton, leaving a cliffhanger for a sequel. - Wikipedia

Check out Captain America: The First Avengervehicle concept art by Daniel Simon!

The cars, planes and motorcycles for Captain America are mind-blowing in their iconic styling and futuristic look. One of the artists that helped create these stunning vehicles is Daniel Simon. Simon is a German-born concept designer, author, and producer who's worked on big budget movies like Tron: Legacy (2010), Oblivion (2013)andPrometheus (2012).

Here's how Simon's website describes the design process for Captain America: "Marvel’s Captain America: The First Avenger under the production design lead of Oscar-winning Rick Heinrichs and director Joe Johnston was an unusual design challenge. Lead Vehicle Designer Daniel Simon stepped out of his comfort zone to create vehicles with a believable look of the 40ies. ‘Simplicity’ was the main input given to Simon on how to translate the scripted vehicles into unique movie vehicles. Between November 2009 and June 2010 Simon created seven machines hand in hand with Heinrichs and Johnston at Marvel Studios in Manhattan Beach, Los Angeles. Intense research of both historically correct engineering and the Marvel Comic universe was part of every days work. Director Johnston – a blessed designer of Star Wars fame – guided Simon through the endless possibilities and variations, to find vehicles that could have truly existed, fulfill their purpose in the film’s story, and are feasible for manufacturing."

Schmidt Hydra Coupe
This imposing 1942 supercharged V16 Coupé is the eccentric personal car of Marvel’s villain Johann Schmidt – the Red Skull. Designed by Lead Vehicle Designer Daniel Simon for the 2011 feature film ‘Captain America’, it is seen here in a special finish. Technically a roadster, Schmidt did not like to rename his beloved machine that began life as a Coupé. At 7.62m length, and with 10 wheels driven by a 16 cylinder cube power engine, it is said to be the fastest car of the era.
First, here are some gorgeous photos of the finished car

RoboCop (1987) concept art by Robert Webb

Check out RoboCopcar concept art by Robert Webb!

Every Friday I try and feature artwork from a classic of science fiction cinema or television. This week's "Flashback Friday" post is on RoboCop (1987).

RoboCop has a special place in my heart for a few reasons. When I first saw the movie poster for the film in the newspaper I cut it out and hung it on my wall for months. Plus, the RoboCop computer game was the first game I ever played all the way through the end. It was pretty awesome. This movie is one of the classics of our time and the film has spawned a reboot coming out later this year.

The 1985 Ford Taurus that RoboCop drove was actually a last-minute decision by the production team. Originally, RoboCop was supposed to drive a custom vehicle nicknamed the "Robo-Car" or "Turbo-Car." Robert Webb is one of the designers that worked on the custom car design and he shared the original design illustrations from the film on his site.

Final Design

Webb was a professional artist and car builder who's worked on entertainment projects like Knight Rider (1986).

There's more to learn at his site. For example, did you know that the movie title was spelled "Robocop" (all lowercase) until Webb started making notes using the spelling "RoboCop?" Learn more behind-the-scenes facts about the design of the car and the RoboCop production at http://www.robertwebb.com.

What do you think of the concept art? Would you have liked to see this car instead of the Ford Taurus?

Official RoboCop Summary
There's a new law enforcer in town and he's half man, half machine! From the director of Total Recall and Basic Instinct comes a "sci-fi fantasy with sleek, high-powered drive" (Time) about an indestructible high-tech policeman who dishes out justice at every turn! When a good cop (Peter Weller) gets blown away by some ruthless criminals, innovative scientists and doctors are able to piece him back together as an unstoppable crime-fighting cyborg called "RoboCop." Impervious to bullets and bombs, and equipped with high-tech weaponry, RoboCop quickly makes a name for himself by cleaning up the crime-ridden streets of violence-ravaged Detroit. But despite his new, hardened exterior, RoboCop is tormented by scraps of memory of his former life, and relives vivid nightmares of his own death at the hands of the vicious killers. Now he is out to seek more than justice...he wants revenge!

Check out Battleshipconcept art by Jock!

The movie Battleship sank at the box office back in 2012. Based on the popular Hasbro game it did well enough to cover the $200 million budget, but just couldn't get a footing in the U.S. market. Reviews were mixed with Hollywood Reporter summing it up by saying, "impressive visual effects and director Peter Berg's epic set pieces fight against an armada of cinematic clichés and some truly awful dialogue." As is often the case, unpopular movies often have amazing artwork developed behind-the-scenes. One of the artists that contributed to the impressive visuals is Jock and he shared some of his designs in his portfolio.

Mark "Jock" Simpson is a professional concept artist who's worked on Hollywood projects like Batman Begins, DuneandDredd.
