Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.storyboards by Warren Drummond
Check out Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.storyboards by Warren Drummond!

Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. by Joss Whedon has been highly controversial show. But this week the ratings for the show, which were on a minor slide, went up to 9.89 million viewers showing the television show is finding it's audience.

Back in August, Joss Whedon described Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. as "a very deliberate deconstruction...to star the person who mattered the least." He added, "There’s a world of superheroes and superstars, they’re celebrities, and that’s a complicated world - particularly complicated for people who don’t have the superpowers, the disenfranchised." Along the way we have insane action and cutting-edge special effects that are making the show one of the best on television. One of the artists working to bring Joss Whedon's vision to life is storyboard artist Warren Drummond and he told me what it's like to work on the latest show by Marvel. He also kindly sent me some exclusive storyboards to share with you.

Warren Drummond is a professional storyboard artist who's worked on blockbuster movies like Rise of the Planet of the Apes(2011), The Amazing Spider-Man (2012)and X-Men: First Class (2011). He describes his job as seeing in pictures and then executing "the image my mind has captured or created on to paper and perhaps later into a computer."

Check out the rest of the images after the jump (click to enlarge).

These boards are from the opening of the Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. episode "The Asset."

Maurice Mitchell: Thanks for taking time to do this interview Warren! So, you're one of the storyboard artists for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Did you work on the pilot, or the series?
Warren Drummond: I have only worked on the series episodes after the pilot. I did get a chance to visit the set once during shooting of the pilot. Joss Whedon didn't use boards.

MM: I guess Whedon  has it all in his head. What's it like working on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.?
WD: It's a comic book geek's dream come true. The atmosphere is great because I don't see egos when I work with the crew. That comes from the top down from the producers, to the various episode directors, to the actors. I've been into Marvel Comics since I was a kid, so...COME ON!! I've been blessed to work on The Amazing Spider-Man, and got a few days on X-Men: First Class, but this is my first project that comes directly from Marvel Entertainment. I also love talking to the people in the office, who are equally great. As far as the storyboards, I'm doing action and science fiction!

If I actually get to draw Nick Fury sometime (he already cameo'd) I don't know what I would do. One of the directors is a friend I have worked with on several occasions, so it was fun to reunite.

MM: You've worked on many films, how is it different working on storyboards for television? Is there a faster pace or challenge that a television schedule has?
WD: Television has a finite time to do a limited amount of work. I can't finesse things. I also work with a new director every episode I do until they start bringing people back. I have to prove myself all over, which is fine. On features, you may have time to work out the kinks, but even then you can't dawdle. My friends who work on the Marvel movies are under the gun all the time and have done all nighters.

Storyboards aren't comic books. There are no inkers. They're meant to get the information along and to put the director, stunts, camera, FX and the crew on the same page.

MM: There are some terrific action scenes in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.? Which was the most memorable scene to work on and why?
WD: There are a few coming up from episodes that have been shot, but not aired. The best is yet to come.

MM: What's coming next from you Warren?
WD: I have some boards in the recent book Star Wars Storyboards: The Prequel Trilogy by J.W. Rinzler, who has done terrific "Making Of" books of the original Star Wars trilogy and other Lucas films. I have a Jango Fett on the cover from my brief stint on Attack of the Clones.

Official The Amazing Spider-Man 2 Synopsis
"We’ve always known that Spider-Man’s most important battle has been within himself: the struggle between the ordinary obligations of Peter Parker and the extraordinary responsibilities of Spider-Man. But in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Peter Parker finds that a greater conflict lies ahead. It’s great to be Spider-Man (Andrew Garfield). For Peter Parker, there’s no feeling quite like swinging between skyscrapers, embracing being the hero, and spending time with Gwen (Emma Stone). But being Spider-Man comes at a price: only Spider-Man can protect his fellow New Yorkers from the formidable villains that threaten the city. With the emergence of Electro (Jamie Foxx), Peter must confront a foe far more powerful than he. In The Amazing Spider-Man Dr. Curt Connors (Rhys Ifans) is working on a serum based on lizard DNA to regrow his lost arm. In the process he tests it on several lab rats known as "Fred" and "Wilma." Later, Fred mutates into a monstrous lizard\rat hybrid creature. The movie lizard-rat was pretty freaky, but concept art by Ian Joyner shows it could have been freakier. Plus, you can see alternate designs for The Lizard and his mutated police "drones."

Check out this video by Hugo Martin about working on Pacific Rim.

Pacific Rim will go down in history as one of the greatest giant robot monster movies ever made. Director Guillermo del Toro collected an army of concept artists to help him bring his vision to life and one of the talented artists is Hugo Martin. I already shared some of Hugo's Pacific Rim concept art, but here's a video from QuakeCon 2013 where he describes working on concept design for games and film.

Martin was a professional concept artist and art director who's worked on Hollywood blockbuster movies like The Avengers (2010)and Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters (2012) but this past May he left L.A. to become Art Director at id Software.

Check out the video "From Sketchbook to the Big Screen" after the jump and learn how he incorporated real anatomy into the robot designs.

The video is 40 minutes long, but he talks about working on Pacific Rim at about the 10 minute mark.

Official PACIFIC RIM Synopsis
When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes-a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)-who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

Thrilling STAR WARS EPISODE V: THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK Asteroid Chase Storyboard Comparison

Check out vintage storyboards from Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back!

Every Friday, I try and share artwork from a classic science fiction film or television show. This week's "Flashback Friday" post is on Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back (1980).

One of the most memorable moments in the Star Wars films is when Han Solo, Princess Leia, C-3PO and Chewbacca lead the Empire's Tie Fighters in a high-speed chase through an asteroid field.

Recently the official Star Wars YouTube channel shared the clip "The Empire Strike Back Featurette: The Flight Through the Asteroids" from one of the VCR box sets. The clip is one of the bonus features from the 1995 "Limited Edition Star Wars ISD Executor Collectors Tin" released in the UK and limited to 20,000 copies. Hopefully we'll get some more material from the set soon.

The storyboard artists are probably by Joe Johnston and Nilo Rodis-Jamero, but I've been burned on that assumption before. So, who knows?

Check out the video after the jump.

StarWars.com describes the clip this way:
"This vintage featurette for The Empire Strikes Back takes viewers through the film's famed asteroid field sequence, overlayed with the original storyboards. Storyboards are essential to the preproduction of a movie, as they map out how scenes will visually appear. As seen here, interior cockpit shots, TIE fighters colliding with asteroids, and the Millennium Falcon docking inside a larger asteroid all appear as storyboards almost exactly as they would be seen in the final film."

X-Men: First Classconcept art by Josh Kao
Check out X-Men: First Classconcept art by Josh Kao!

The script for the X-Men prequel X-Men: First Class went through many revisions and one of the changes was the elimination of the Brazilian mutant Sunspot (Roberto Da Costa) who absorbs solar energy for super-strength, flight and enregy blasts. Director Matthew Vaughn said, "The X-Men we used were already chosen by Bryan and Fox. In the draft they gave me all of the characters were in there. We cut Sunspot because we didn't have enough time or money. They couldn't make him work, he was a pain in the a**." At the MCM Expo co-writer Ashley Miller said, "Sunspot was going to be in it, until quite a late stage. Bryan [Singer] liked the idea of ice on one side - in the symbolic form of Emma Frost - and fire on the other."

Jay "Nailbiter111" Jayson at Comic Book Movie dug up some concept art that shows what they could have looked like. Thanks to concept artist Josh Kao's blog, we get to see early concept art for both Sunspot and Emma Frost who turned into a diamond-like form.

Josh Kao is a professional concept/storyboard artist who's worked on Hollywood projects like Tron: Uprising and video games like God of War: Ascension, Halo 4, Call of Duty: Black Ops 2.

See Unfilmed Giant Samurai Warrior in Brazil Concept Art and Storyboards by Norman Garwood and Terry Gilliam

Check out Brazilconcept art and storyboards by Norman Garwood and Terry Gilliam!

Every Friday, I try and share artwork from a classic science fiction film or television show. This week's "Flashback Friday" post is on Brazil (1985).

While Gilliam often storyboards his own films he employs various designers to help him finalize his vision. Garwood first worked with Gilliam on Time Bandits and the two collaborated to create the brilliant look of the film which was originally called, "The Ministry of Torture or Brazil: How I Learned to Live with the System."

The movie has inspired dozens of films from Delicatessen (1991), The City of Lost Children (1995), Coen brothers'The Hudsucker Proxy (1994), and Alex Proyas'Dark City (1998). Even Batman (1989) was influenced by it since cinematographer Roger Pratt worked on both films and production designer Anton Furst studied the film for his designs.

Norman Garwood is a professional production designer who's worked on Academy Award nominated films like Glory(1989) and Hook (1991) and classics like The Princess Bride.

Check out the rest of the images after the jump and read how the art department came up with the film's unique look (click to enlarge).

There are many things in the first draft of the script that didn't make it to the final film including a scene where Sam dreams he's dragging a woman from a vast field covered in eyeballs and fights "Forces of Darkness" and a nine-foot-tall samurai warrior. After a fierce battle he removes the mask and discovers the warrior has his face. While the scene was cut from the film we do have his storyboard and drawings of the samurai.

 Terry Gilliam

In an interview with Wide Angle Closeup Norman Garwood talked about designing for Brazil.

"The look of BRAZIL, it really did evolve. I mean, I started to look at a lot of '30s and '40s, more '30s magazines. There was a sort of Deco feel which we wanted, and then it was these inventions that you would find in the '30s books, it was almost like 'the shape of the world to come,' what people thought armored vehicles would look like in the 21st century, and what airplanes would look like. That was a great source of inspiration, early magazines. And then it was just taking that and building upon that. But things like machinery and equipment, that kind of just evolved really.

"First of all, Terry found this thing with the ducting, just sort of ducting going through a room or whatever, and then the ducting then grew and grew because we thought, 'What if there was ducting not just in the poor areas? What if we put it everywhere?' Like Central Services just in the end put the ducting everywhere and if it was in a smart restaurant then it would be 'poshed up' ducting with mirror balls, sort of squares on it. So it just really grew and grew." - Garwood

"The clerks' pool where Sam would work before he got promoted, again I didn't want to have any color [to portray] the mundaneness of it all. Everyone would just go to do their work, and the only bit of pleasure would be to try to tune in on their TV monitors an old film or something — that was the little bit of sparkle in their very gray lives." - Garwood

The Ministry Offices by Norman Garwood

"The Ministry offices, that was a big build, at Lee International. Terry and I actually went to locations [looking] for that but everywhere we looked we couldn't find it. We were basically looking in France because the apartment building where Sam lives, the exteriors for that, were shot in Marne la Vallée, that sort of post-modernistic block. So where he walked, that was locations obviously, and then the balcony and the actual interiors to [Sam's] apartment was a build. The Ministerial building, we gave up with in the end and I said, 'Why don't I build it? It would be easier.' So I came up with that big set with the steps and then we revamped that into the second office when Sam is promoted." - Garwood

The Liberal Club by Norman Garwood
"[The restaurant scene was shot in] Mentmore. That was an interesting location insomuch as when we got there it was basically a huge hall with a gallery going around all four sides, and we looked at it and Terry said, 'Well, all the interest is high up,' And then I said, 'Well, why don't I build a floor to lift everybody up so that people come in and go up steps to this high-level restaurant area.' And then we had the central columns of ducting in there as well.

"That was a great location and the people there were, I think it was a sort of a transcendental organization. They were not reluctant but they were slightly concerned that we wanted to come and build this restaurant in the middle of their hallway and then blow it up. But when we finished the set they were so taken with it, they sort of inquired whether it could be left, because they really liked the whole idea of this restaurant! But we couldn't." - Garwood

Predators(2010)female Predator concept art by Michael Broom

Check out Predatorsand X-Men Origins: Wolverineconcept art by Michael Broom!

The Predator (1987) film established the look of the alien hunters pretty definitively. Over the years we've seen some variation, but not much. Some have been tall and some have been short. Some have been thin and others muscular, but one type has never been seen on screen: the female Predator. They've been in comics like Aliens vs. Predator: Deadliest of the Speciesand novels, like Aliens Vs. Predator: Prey, but never on film.

For Predators (2010) they considered having a female Predator and it went as far as the concept design stage. Michael Broom, who worked on the film as a concept illustrator, has some designs for Predators including a female warrior. She's one ugly motherf**er, but brilliant.

As a bonus, I'm also sharing one of his alternate looks for Deadpool from X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

Michael Broom is a professional concept artist who's worked on Hollywood movies like Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem (2007), The Incredible Hulk (2008),and The Thing (2011).

Unused Predator Designs

The concept art was featured in a teaser video at Austin, Texas'"South by Southwest Film Festival" back in 2010 and producer Robert Rodriguez said it was just one of many designs considered for the film. "Most of it was done by three guys that work at Troublemaker Digitalwho were churning out stuff to see, because I said let's see a lot of ideas so we can pick the best design." Rodriguez said, "Create with this jawbone or that eye set, this body... and as I looked, we just had so much great stuff that I said, 'Well, let's just put it all up so people can see how difficult it would be to go through that process. Because you're like, 'that's great – let's use him!' and 50 more flash by and you can hardly tell that there's a little bit something different here, and I like that one more. And then there are a lot of decisions you have to make as far as finding the right combination. And probably what we ended up with is some of those drawings, combinations of the drawings in there, but you'll have to wait for the movie to see what we actually used. Plus it changes more when you get to the sculpture stage and you play with the idea more, so some of that stuff isn't even final designs."

Broom says he tried to get "ladies represented in the movie...but all [he] got was hate mail about why she has boobs."

Here are some more concept designs for Predators that inspired the final designs.

Check out Pacific Rim animatedstoryboards!

Pacific Rim, despite a slow start, is a blockbuster hit and director Guillermo del Toro is writing a sequel to Pacific Rim whether the studio buys it or not. "We are writing the sequel." del Toro said, "Travis Beacham and I are writing, so that is active. The decision to green light or not, that’s definitely above my pay rate."

For now, we have to continue to marvel at the visual feast that is Pacific Rim. One of the featurettes on the Pacific Rim Blu-Ray is a animatic of the Shatterdome Hong Kong Bay deployment of Chernol Alpha, Crimson Typhoon and Striker Eureka.

Here's the description: "Take an exclusive look at the storyboard renderings of Pacific Rim's majestic and mighty Shatterdome launch sequence, in which a trio of humanity's most powerful Jaegers are flown via helicopter into Hong Kong Bay to fight what they think will be just another Kaiju. Oh, my heavens, are they wrong."

Every Friday, I try and share artwork from a classic science fiction film or television show. This week's "Flashback Friday" post is on The Terminator(1984).

One classic scene from the film is when the T-800 (Arnold Schwarzenegger) returns to his apartment and repairs the damage from a shotgun shot. It really shows how inhuman he is as he operates on himself without a hint of pain or concern.

Action Packed BATMAN BEGINS and THE DARK KNIGHT STORYBOARDS by Jim Cornish and Martin Ansbury

Check out Batman Begins and The Dark Knight storyboards by Jim Cornish!

The Batman films prove Christopher Nolan is a master at dramatic action, but he also has some insanely cool action scenes. His team included Jim Cornish and Martyin Ansbury as storyboard artists and Jim told me a little about what it was like to work on the film. See storyboards from Batman Begins ("Gordon meets Wayne,""Batman meeting Rachel" and the "Batmobile Chase") and from The Dark Knight ("Joker Bank Robbery" and "The Ambush").

Jim Cornish and Martin Ansbury are both professional storyboard artists who've worked on blockbuster movies like Skyfall (2012) and Captain America: The First Avenger (2011).

"Working on the film was great fun - who doesn't want to draw Batman!" Cornish said, "What made it so much better was working with my great friend and fellow storyboard artist Martin Asbury - He's one of the reasons I got in to boarding in the first place and he's such a knowledgeable and funny fella."

"The chase scene at police headquarters is all original ideas and very little changed really - the sequence as it appears in the film is slightly shorter (though not by much) and the geography of the building may be slightly different but the main strokes are certainly there. The main interior was a building in London, the rooftop was a building in Chicago which is the reason the sequence was boarded - to make sure the two locations would cut together and tell the story!"

"I really enjoyed boarding the Batmobile - Martin did most of the early work with it - but as time went on I picked up the chase in Lower Wacker drive in Chicago - Once you know the shape of the thing it's like drawing anything else, in some ways easier because it is faceted so there are plenty of angles. We also had access to prototype models, Art Dept concepts and at later stages one of the actual vehicles to explore."

"The whole film was a challenge because it was the biggest movie I'd boarded at the time - but it was great fun to face those challenges."

Check out Thorconcept art by Wil Rees!

"What Realm?! Alfheim? Nornheim?" In the first Thor film only one reference was made to Nornheim, when Thor was trying to figure out where he had been banished. In a deleted scene, Thor and Loki talk about the "time in Nornheim" when they fought a hundred warriors. But it turns out there was supposed to be a whole scene there.

In Thor we mainly got to see the main city of Asgard. In the latest Marvel movie Thor: The Dark World we got to see more, but it turns out there were plans to include at least one other Asgardian location in the first Thorfilm: Nornhiem. I contacted artist Wil Rees who worked on the first film and he confirmed that the home of the Rock Trolls (before they were banished to Vanaheim) was cut from the film, but he has the illustrations on his site.

Wil Madoc Rees is a professional concept illustrator who's worked on Hollywood movies like Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (2007), Spider-Man (2002) and Serenity (2005).

Every Friday I try to share designs from a classic work of science fiction film or television. This week's "Flashback Friday" post is on The NeverEnding Story (1984).

One of the films that defined my childhood was The NeverEnding Story (German: Die unendliche Geschichte), based on the book of the same name by Michael Ende. I was an avid reader and the story about a boy that entered a world of books touched my heart. Roger Ebert said, the film "contains some of the more inventive special-effects work of a time when battles in outer space, etc., have grown routine." The world in the movie is stunning and the main creature designer and concept illustrator is Count Ul de Rico.

Born Ulderico Gropplero di Troppenburg, he's an Italian-born artist and author of illustrated children's books, like The Rainbow Goblins (1978), who's worked on Hollywood movies like Flash Gordon (1980).

Ender's Gameconcept art by Cenay Oekman
Check out Ender's Gameconcept art by Cenay Oekman!

Ender's Game was released earlier this month and I talked briefly with illstrator Cenay Oekman about working on the film. I'm also sharing some unseen concept art from G.I. Joe: Retaliation and Captain America: The First Avenger

Cenay Oekman is a professional visual effects and concept artist who's worked on blockbuster movies like Inception(2010), G.I. Joe: Retaliation (2012)and The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (2013).

Check out the rest of the images after the jump (click to enlarge).

He started out as a concept artist for a game company in 1983 and switched to working in 3D. But Cenay felt that 3D visual artists are "only a number" and wanted to become a concept artist instead. His main goal in Ender's Game was to take the "visually stunning" work and add more detail and texturing to the final 3D models. Cenay was in charge of the 3D department guiding the build, especially the Eros landscape landing platform. It was designed mostly "free style."

Formics

Eros

Shuttle

Cenay said the most challenging part of the designs were the shuttles since they had "to be connected to things we know." The shape of the shuttle was based on an electric shaver. They then had to come up with engines and other details. The space station took a long time to do, but he says they're very happy with the results.
