"Avengers: Infinity War" has made over a billion at the box office but it's still going strong. Part of its success is owed to the amazing art design on the film. One of the talented artists shared some concept art for the film. It includes an apparently unused scene with Iron Man destroying what looks like the engine of Thanos' Q-Ship.

Andrew Reeder is a professional concept artist who's worked on big budget movies like Avatar, Star Trek, and Star Trek Into Darkness.

"I wanted to share some concept artwork I did for the movie,"  Reeder said on his site. "In these scenes, Ebony Maw talks to Thanos and is later attacked by Iron Man and Spiderman. I built our 3d production model and rendered in Keyshot and painted over in Photoshop."

"This is a keyframe illustration I did of the Q-ship Engine Room," Reeder added. "The sequence was ultimately not shown but was a lot of fun to work on!"

Check out Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi Slave Leia concept art by Nilo Rodis-Jamero and Aggie Rodgers!

Click on the images to enlarge

It's "Flashback Friday" and 25 years ago today on May 25, 1983 "Return of the Jedi" premiered in the U.S. In honor of that occasion I'm sharing artwork and designed for the iconic "Slave Leia bikini".

In "Return of the Jedi", Carrie Fisher is kidnapped by Jabba the Hutt and forced to wear a metal bikini style outfit. Costume designers Nilo Rodis-Jamero and Aggie Rodgers designed the costume.

Nilo Rodis-Jamero was the assistant art director of visual effects for Star Wars: Episode IV - A New HopeStar Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back, and costume designer on Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi. Aggie Rodgers is a professional costume designer who worked on Hollywood projects like Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi (1983), Rent (2005), and Willow (1988)

George Lucas told them he wanted something similar to the work of fantasy artist Frank Frazetta. He made an iconic cover for Edgar Rice Burroughs' book "A Princess of Mars" in 1917 that has a woman in an outfit very similar to Princess Leia's.

They created a number of costumes for different scenes that she and stuntwoman Tracy Eddon could wear comfortably.

Here's the final costume:

Here are the early designs

You can see they wanted a much more ornate costume with flowing lines and fabric, but technical difficulties forced to simplify it. The costume still looks lovely.

"Avengers: Age of Ultron": Unseen MegaUltron in Concept Art by Phil Saunders

Check out Avengers: Age of Ultron concept art by Phil Saunders!

"Avengers: Infinity War" is lighting up the box office, but it follows in the success of the last Avengers film "Avengers: Age of Ultron". I recently got in touch with one of the talented artists who designed for the movie and he kindly agreed to answer a few questions. He talks about the final climactic battle cut from the film and the biggest change working on the movies for Marvel Studios.

Phil Saunders is a professional concept artist who's worked on major motion films like Captain America: The First Avenger, Iron Man, and Spider-Man 3.

1) What’s it like working on Marvel movies today versus when you first started?

Well, there’s certainly a lot more scrutiny to what we do, and a lot more awareness of the exposure we will get. When we first started on Iron Man it was just another movie, albeit with some of the coolest characters to design, but we had no idea it would have the impact it did. Now that we’re ten years in, we’re ready for the onslaught of attention.

We always do our concept art with one eye to the design of the movie and one eye to the “Art of” books, knowing each illustration will be scrutinized by fans rather than staying behind the scenes. It’s really forced us to hone our crafts as artists as well as designers.

It’s nice that Marvel is one of the unique studios that’s aware of the value of good art beyond the expedience of getting the movie done and gives us the time to do art we can be proud of.

2) You’ve designed many Iron Man suits. What’s the key to giving them a cohesive look?

As with all of my design, I’m always striving for simplicity. That may seem oxymoronic as each iteration of the Iron Man suit has gotten more visually complex.

But the goal is to find a simple, singular design theme and form language and allow it to flow across the suit, tying all of the areas of concentrated detail together. I spend a lot of time just working a  cutline to make sure it flows well from any angle and ties into other lines across the suit.

The other major goal is to create an abstract sculpture of idealized human anatomy disguised within the recognizable artifacts of the technology. So you get the sense of a heroic figure without being hit over the head with blatant pecs, abs, and biceps, but instead panels, intakes, foils and sleeves that feel natural to the function of the machine.

3) Do you have a favorite piece of artwork from the MCU that may or may not have been used?

I’m always focussed on the suit designs, so I rarely have the opportunity to do a keyframe illustration. I did on Age of Ultron, for a climactic battle in one of the early versions of the script that would feature thousands of the Ultron “bots” interlocking to form a giant “MegaUltron.”

Josh Nizzi did the early concepts for it and I took it a bit further in this illustration suggesting more structure to the way they would be linked.

Ultimately the idea was axed before I even finished the shot, but I liked it so much I completed it on my own time.

Rocket Looks Very Different in "Guardians Of The Galaxy" (2014) Concept Art By Ryan Meinerding

Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) - Rocket (voiced by Bradley Cooper)

Check out Guardians of the Galaxy concept art by Ryan Meinerding!

It's "Flashback Friday" where I share concept art or storyboards from a classic science-fiction movie or show. This week we're flashing back to 2014 with "Guardians of the Galaxy".

One of the most talked about characters in the movie is Rocket aka Rocket Racoon. When he was being developed for the film James Gunn said they spent a lot of time working on him. "[Rocket Raccoon]’s more of a grounded, real little creature as opposed to a cartoonish thing," Gunn told, "Hey U Guys". "I’ve done a lot of studying with real raccoons, and we had real raccoons come in. We’ve done photography with them, I’ve played with raccoons, and fed raccoons, and dealt a lot with real raccoons to get some of the behaviour down, because it’s really, really important to me that Rocket Raccoon, who is the heart of the movie, is not a cartoon character, it’s not Bugs Bunny in the middle of The Avengers, it’s a real, little, somewhat mangled beast that’s alone. There’s no one else in the universe quite like him, he’s been created by these guys to be a mean-a** fighting machine."

Many artists worked on the look of the film and one of the talented artists recently shared some early development work for the film.

Ryan Meinerding is a professional character designer, concept artist and head of Marvel Studios Visual Development who's worked on Hollywood projects like Iron Man, Captain America: The First Avenger, and Watchmen.

"This image was first shown very briefly at SDCC in Hall H when Guardians was announced," Meinerding said on his Instagram page. "It was one of the first attempts at figuring out what Rocket could look like. The final design was done by the awesome Charlie Wen.

"[Throwback] to a very early painting I did of Star-Lord and Rocket," Meinerding said. "This was done before [James Gunn] was brought on when we were coming up with ideas on our own. This was exploring what Rocket could look like if he was an alien."

Check out Ant-Man and the Wasp concept art by Tully Summers!

"Ant-Man and the Wasp" is still breaking box office records and opened up a whole new world with a unique villain and an adventure in the microscopic "Quantum Realm". The Quantum Realm is a different dimension that can be reached by shrinking between the molecules of matter and is the place the original Wasp, Michelle Pfeiffer’s Janet van Dyne, was trapped for decades.

One of the talented concept artists, Tully Summers, has shared his artwork on his site. Summers is a professional concept artist who's worked on films like Thor(2011), The Dark Knight Rises, and Avengers: Infinity War (2018).

The images show some strange microscopic creatures never seen in the film and alternate looks at Ghost' (Hannah John-Kamen) costume.

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Early Microverse Ideas - Nano MedBots

"As cool as all the native microverse critter encounters were, I thought it would be interesting to introduce a man-made threat sent from the outside world," Summers said on his site. "In this case, Nano Medbots originally designed to heal the human body, now re-purposed and sent by nefarious folk to end our heroes."

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Early Microverse Predation Mite

"Before we had a finalized script, we were asked to generate images to inspire and facilitate writing. At the time the movie was imagined as Heroes against nature but in the Microverse. A sort of Quantum Realm Skull Island. I'd still love to see that movie!" - Tully Summers

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Early Ghost Images

"I had the exciting opportunity to work with all my friends over at Marvel Vis Dev on Ant-Man and the Wasp under supervision by the great Andy Park. These are some early Ghost images. I was fascinated [by] the technological/haunting aspect of the character." - Tully Summers

"My design for Ghost. I'm very happy with the excellent job the costume department did in fabricating the suit and thrilled that Ghost was played by the wonderful Hannah John-Kamen! The look was directly inspired by the classic comic images." - Tully Summers

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Ghost power exploration.

"Early on we had not defined Ghost's power set. This was an image where I proposed her ability to phase others by touch, not just herself, allowing her to sink people into the ground or fuse their head into a girder. I thought this could give her an extra creepy factor...'don't let her touch me!!'" - Tully Summers

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Ghost early Rejuvenation chamber

"My early take was like a Dracula techno-coffin, also my nod to Metropolis. Production eventually took this to a more 'home made tech' look that used Fresnel lenses.'" - Tully Summers

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Ghost early phase claws

"Early on, I took the 'ghost' moniker literally and had her floating through walls. Keying of some of the comic images I gave her long phase claws that would 'cut' reality and allow her to phase through things. Eventually deemed too visually similar to Wolverine claws." - Tully Summers

"An alternate version of the phase claws, intended to phase surfaces by touch. The phase pads exist on the final costume, but production opted for the much quicker full body phase, more suited to the high paced fight scenes." - Tully Summers

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Ghost overload idea

"When we decided Ghost's suit was containing her, not granting her powers, I became fascinated with the idea that the more her suit was damaged, the more powerful she became. More chaotic and more dangerous." - Tully Summers

Ant-Man has an amazing set of tools, but he almost had one more. Concept artist Andy Park shared some designs he had for an invisible suit that never made it into the films. One of the amazing artists in the Marvel movie shared some artwork on his personal Instagram page.

Andy Park is a professional concept artist who's worked on Hollywood films like Black Panther, Ant-Man, and Avengers: Age of Ultron.

"An idea I’ve had since day one on the [first] Ant-Man film & that I revisited again on Ant-Man & the Wasp was the idea that he could go into stealth mode using his Pym particles (or some other particles/chemicals) to turn his suit dark/essentially invisible," Park said on Instagram. "It furthers his stealth abilities. Both Edgar Wright & Peyton Reed liked the idea. But both times there was no real story moment to make this happen. Oh well... Maybe one day. So here’s the simple animation I did to help sell the idea."

The adorable Porgs from "The Last Jedi" took the Internet by storm. Now one of the talented concept artists working on the film has shared his work on the Porgs and other creatures for the film. He also talked about the design process to StarWars.com.

Jake Lunt Davies is a professional concept artist who's worked on big budget projects like Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Solo: A Star Wars Story, and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

The Porgs

"From what I gathered, Rian [Johnson] had gone to shoot this sequence on Skellig Michael, which is the real island location that stands in for Ahch-To, and that island is covered in puffins," Lunt told StarWars. "It’s a wildlife preserve and everywhere you look there are hundreds of birds dotted around the landscape. From what I gathered, Rian, in a positive spin on this, was looking at how can he work with this. You can’t remove them. You physically can’t get rid of them. And digitally removing them is an issue and a lot of work, so let’s just roll with it, play with it. And so I think he thought, 'Well, that’s great, let’s have our own indigenous species.'

"We’d already started work on the Caretakers, which again was a brief from Rian. We’d just been told 'puffin people.' Yeah, there was going to be this race of people and puffins again were a source of inspiration for Rian. The puffins were sort of a big influence on everything, really."

The Caretakers

"They came before the porgs and again, that was a one-word brief: 'puffin people.'" Lunt told StarWars. "Okay, so it was more than a one-word brief…two words: 'puffin people.' And then we were told that they were going to be sort of nuns. They were not necessarily a holy order, by like nuns they were an all-female community of indigenous aliens that lived this slightly monastic lifestyle.

"They had some role that was important to the Jedi, perhaps. That was kind of it, really. We started to look at aquatic animals. The color ways of puffins combined with aquatic animals, I suppose. And I drew lots of things that were riffing off walruses and seals and whales. I’d done a handful of different drawings, and you can sort of see in about three different drawings, elements that came together. So for instance, in one drawing, Rian [Johnson] liked the fact that they’ve got bird feet. But the rest of it he wasn’t that keen on, it had a mask on or something like that.

"So we combined a few different elements, and what you end up with, and what I liked about the Caretakers, is that you have this very chunky and, again, quite simple shaped upper body, and tiny, little, thin legs. You get this great silhouette of the Caretakers."

"Did some very early and basic size and suit explorations on Colossus for Deadpool 2 on behalf of ILM," he added "He was supposed to be less bulky and more ripped/defined than he was in the first movie. [The final] version of Colossus for the movie with the individual segmented moving parts looked really nice I think."

"This is an early take on where Vers would convene with the Supreme Intelligence on Hala," Sze said on Instagram. "Back then we were exploring grand arenas and Andy Parkcame up with the idea of using fluids as their technology medium."

"This is my take on the Starforce team using Andy Park in progress Starforce Vers design as a guide," Sze said. "It’s fun to form a team, giving them different skills, expertise, and designs. I’ll break these out individually in later posts to share some of my thoughts when designing them."

"I did this painting of Talos (final design by Ian Joyner) to set the mood and explore his personality," he said. "The [second] image is one of my takes on the character. Talos was described to us as a Skrull spy. I thought since young Nick Fury would interact with Talos, he would come to see Talos as the ultimate spy and model his own look after him.

"Basically, Talos would be the inspiration for Fury’s iconic trench coat look. A little bit of design reverse engineering. It is not MCU canon but my own reason for Talos having a trench coat."

"A lot of the keyframes I do Marvel Studios involve characters resolving their differences with punches," he said about the above illustration. "But sometimes I get to paint a cat freaking out an alien"

"For this keyframe, I drew inspiration from the anime I grew up with," Sze added. "Painting her path of destruction through a space armada is one of the funnest things I got to work on Marvel Studios."

The low-res concept illustration appears to show Rey, Finn, Poe, Chewbacca, and BB-8 in front of the Millennium Falcon being greeted by C-3PO.

The forest setting is similar to the forest moon of the planet Endor.

The second Death Star built by the Empire was destroyed near the planet and the Rise of Skywalker trailer shows them looking out over what appeared to be the remains of a Death Star.

Is this setting up a return to the moon of Endor? We'll have to wait and see.

Check out Ant-Man and the Wasp concept art by Jackson Sze!

The Marvel universe as we know it has come to an end but we can still enjoy the wonderful moments in the movies forever. One big part of Avengers: Endgame is the Quantum Realm. One of the talented artists working on the film shared an early design for the microverse on social media.

Jackson Sze is a professional concept artist who's worked on major motion pictures like Captain Marvel(2019), Ant-Man(2015), and Black Panther (2018).

"Microverse City developed for Antman and the Wasp, Sze said. "I wonder if Scott Lang made it here during his unscheduled stay in the Quantum Realm? You can catch the briefest glimpse of this when Hank and Janet leave the Quantum Realm."

It's hard to make out but if you watch the scene you can just make out the shapes of the buildings.

Janet never explained how she survived her time in the microverse, but she may have had help from others living in the subatomic world. It could have been a reference to Homeworld a molecular chain planet that was eventually destroyed by the despotic ruler Baron Karza and broken into separate worlds.

Pretty amazing stuff. See more of Jackson Sze's portfolio at his Instagram page https://www.instagram.com/jwsze/

Check out Black Panther concept art by Karla Ortez!

Black Panther was a big winner at the box office and award season. One of the many reasons to praise the film was its ground-breaking treatment of female action heroes. The Wakandan Royal Guard are fierce warriors in Oscar-winning costumes. But one of the many talented artists working on the film showed that at one point the fighters would have "complex & adorned [headgear]". It looks amazing and hopefully, they show up in the Black Panther sequel.
