Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015)
Check out Star Wars: The Force Awakens(2015) concept art by Doug Chiang!

One of the biggest scenes in the blockbuster film is the Millenium Falcon vs Tie Fighters fight over the sands of Jakku. The planet was first seen in the game Star Wars: Battlefront which is set 29 years before the events of J.J. Abrams'Episode VII. Concept art has been seen in the art book The Art of Star Wars: The Force Awakens and now Chiang has shared artwork from the film.

Doug Chiang is a professional concept artist and  vice-president and executive creative director at Lucasfilm who's worked on major motion pictures like Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1992), Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace (1999) and War of the Worlds (2005).

The biggest change to the battle was the Star Destroyer almost had a much narrower opening Rey had to fly through.

He also shared artwork from Rey's Star Destroyer scavenging

Chiang has a lot of experience with Star Wars since he worked on the prequels with creator George Lucas. In an interview with Mississauga News he said Lucas pioneered a technique of designing for the film during the writing process. "We were designing as he was writing, which is actually very unusual," Chiang said, "I think it’s a model that is now used in many films but it was very unusual in the sense that I got to start designing right when he was writing. My job didn’t end until the film was up on the screen.”

While the sequel to Return of the Jedi isn't directed by George Lucas, the films show his influence. "Episode VII is probably closer in kin to EpisodesIV,V and VI in terms of design esthetics for what’s being created." Chiang said, "It’s interesting in the sense that J.J. is a huge admirer of George and of course everybody is really trying to live up to George’s vision. What I find fascinating is that, even without George guiding everything, we’re (still) in that role of trying to fill George’s shoes and trying to be a filter.

"And it’s a really tough task. After spending seven years with him, I thought I knew Star Wars. But George always surprises me."

Here's a video David Sobozenski made from the trailer footage of the battle.

Ant-Man (2015)
Check out Ant-Man (2015) concept art by John Eaves!

See several Ant-Man tools that never made it into the film. The film Ant-Man is a massive success. But it went through changes after director Edgar Wright left the project. We've had several hints what changed, but a big change is how much others would help in the heist. Early concept art by John Eaves shows Scott having several devices that Ant-Man didn't use. Plus, see some alternate looks at Pym's hearing aid, Ant-Man's helmet, Yellowjacket's carrying case and Cassie Lang's Ugly Rabbit Doll.

John Eaves is a professional designer and illustrator who's worked on big budget projects like Star Trek Into Darkness (2013), Star Trek (2009) and Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991).

Click on the images to enlarge.

"[Ant-Man] is very much a heist film. It has all the fun, tension and drama of a good heist film," Evangeline Lily told CNN, "The heist is being masterminded by myself, my father and Scott Lang." If you watch the film it's a team effort. But, Scott was supposed to have tools to break in without help using Pym technology.

In one scene Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) break into Yellowjacket's (Corey Stoll) facility. A team member shuts down a laser grid into the facility during the break-in. In the concept art, there's a device called a "Laser Grid Scrambler". Plus, there's a "Pym Particle Atomizer" that would let him spray an object to make it grow or shrink.

The cutest thing that didn't make it into the film is the saddle for the flying ant nicknamed "Ant-thony".

Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015)
Check out Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015) concept art by Iain McCaig

The film Star Wars Episode VII has amazing visuals and I'm happy to share more from the artists that worked on the film. This time, they're by Iain McCaig. The art book The Art of Star Wars: The Force Awakens is a treasure trove of behind-the-scenes images and information.

McCaig is a professional concept artist, writer and director of such big-budget projects as The Avengers (2012), Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace (1999) and Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith(2005).

Rey

Some early costume designs by McCaig show a different look for her. The costume designer Michael Kaplan spoke with Clothes on Film about his designs for Rey.

“My job is to delineate characters based on information in the script," Kaplan said, "I took all the clues of her character (she is poor, she works as a scavenger, her work requires agility, climbing, she lives in a hot and bright desert climate, where the nights are probably cool, there are possibly sand storms, she rides a speeder). I took this information and from it I created elements of wardrobe appropriate to her character.

“It was important to me that everything on her body was there for a reason and not adornment. Her arms are wrapped for protection whilst climbing in wreckages, the long gauze crosspiece she wears can be used for climbing or wrapped around her face during dust storms, her head wrap is actually a jumper with long sleeves wrapped around her head; it keeps the sand out of her hair and is useful on chilly desert nights. The light colours are appropriate for the desert heat. The homemade goggles (made from old, scavenged Stormtrooper ‘eyes’) protect her eyes from dust, sand and sunlight on her speeder rides.

“I created two definite colour palate and fabric-type divisions which I think clearly clarifies. The New Order colours are cold; black, shades of grey, teal blue and of course, white. The fabrics are polished wools, nylon and synthetics. The silhouettes are extremely heroic and hard-edged; think 1980s Theirry Mugler. The Rebel colour palate is earth tones; olive drab, rust, tan, ochre and shades of brown. The fabrics are natural; cotton, boiled wool, linen. The uniforms are rumpled and broken down.”

General Organa

Another costume design by Iain McCaig gave Princess Leia (now General Organa) a jacket inspired by the wardrobe of the actress Sarah Bernhardt. “It’s such an attractive choice because it really sculpts the face,” says McCaig.

While the book is great there's a misquote. The quote by McCaig says "I love that quote from A WIZARD of Earthseas, the fantasy novel by Ursala K. Le Guin: "When you light a candle, you also cast a shadow.' That inspired me to propose, for the first time, that Anakin's ghost could come back." Iain pointed out to me that the real quote is "To light a candle is to cast a shadow". The caption had the correct quote, but his quote does not. A minor point in a wonderful book, but worth noting.

By the way, normally I do Flashback Fridays. But since I've been neglecting my blog in favor of my Superman site I'll just apologize for the lack of updates. I'm working to get everything back on schedule soon!

Is "Star Trek: Discovery" Designed by Ralph McQuarrie?

Check out Star Trek: Discoverydesigns based on concept art by Ralph McQuarrie!

This past weekend at San Diego Comic-Con 2016 CBS revealed the first look of the new starship for the upcoming live-action TV series Star Trek: Discovery. It's a unique design but it actually has an old look. Back in the 1970's McQuarrie was hired to redesign the U.S.S. Enterprise for Star Trek: Phase II or Star Trek: Planet of the Titans.

When co-creator Bryan Fuller was asked on the panel if the Discovery was based on Ralph McQuarrie’s designs he said, "to a point that we can’t legally comment on it until [our legal team] figures out some things." Samuel Michlap is listed as the vehicle concept illustrator for the pilot so he most likely had a hand in the new design as well.

Ralph McQuarrie was a professional illustrator who worked on Hollywood films and television like Star Wars V: The Empire Strikes Back E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial(1982) and the unmade Forbidden Planet remake. His work continues to inspire arts and films like Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

The design is blocky but that gives it a unique look like no other starship in the Star Trek universe.

Star Trek: Discovery takes place in the original series timeline, or "Prime" universe. It's coming to CBS All Access, the network's digital subscription video on demand and live streaming service, with a special premiere on CBS January 2017. You can watch the trailer on CBS.COM

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016)
Check out Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justiceconcept art by Christian Lorenz Scheurer!

The Zack Snyder DC Extended Universe movie Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice Extended Cut is at the top of the home video charts. The moody feel of the film is accomplished by working with top-notch artists in the film industry. One of the artists has shared some of his illustrations for the film.

Christian Scheurer created mood pieces for Gotham City, the Wayne Estate (Manor and Lake House) and Lexcorp, the Kryptonian "Doomsday" pod, and the "Trump-esque" tower of Lex Luther.

Christian Lorenz Scheurer is a professional concept artist born in Bern, Switzerland who's worked on blockbusters like Man of Steel (2013), The Fifth Element (1997) and San Andreas (2015)

When I asked him how he felt about working on Batman v Superman he said "it has been one most architectural projects of" his career. Scheurer believes "that just like the costumes, props, and vehicles (for example the iconic Batmobile), the architectural design of the film serves as a visual amplifier of the psyche of the characters."

Batman v Superman (2016) concept art by Constantine Sekeris

Check out my exclusive interview with Batman v Superman concept artist Constantine Sekeris!

It's a big year for DC comic movies. The Justice League (2017) movie is coming in November and Wonder Woman (2017) is the biggest movie of the summer. So, I thought it would be fun to go back to last year's Batman v Superman movie. Constantine Sekeris, one of the talented concept artists working on the film, was kind enough to grant me this exclusive insight into the design in the film. He's a professional concept artist who's worked on blockbusters like Spider-Man 3 (2007), Star Trek Into Darkness (2013), and AvP: Aliens vs. Predator (2004).

Why didn't Doomsday have bone spurs? What comic series inspired Wonder Woman's costume? How was Robin's costume inspired by the comics?

Maurice Mitchell: What did you work on for the film?
Constantine Sekeris: When I first got the call from [costume designer], Michael Wilkinson, to come on and help concept on some of the lead characters on Batman v Superman he had me start some images of Batman based on some rough PhotoShop sketches he did to get the ball rolling first. This was our first movie working together so I had to see how he liked to work and he needed to see how I interpreted his ideas and sketches.

I did some early passes on Batman that weren't in the right direction, which was then passed to my good friends Jerad Marantz and Keith Christensen.

After that initial start, he asked me to work on Wonder Woman which he had a really great rough start on her and referenced a lot of the old comics and new 52 looks as well. Wonder Woman actually came together pretty quickly in the first initial pass. Michael really captured her iconic look in the first pass and all I was really doing was refining all the details. But, as an overall design, she was pretty much there. We went on exploring in detail her tiara, chest plate, belt, gauntlets, boot design, and skirt. We explored a lot of options which then eventually were passed on to Jerad Marantz and Warren Manser.
Batman v Superman (2016) concept art by Constantine Sekeris

In between conceiving Wonder Woman Michael had me work on Aquaman and Robin as well.

Again Michael and Zack Snyder had a really great initial idea for him with tribal tattoos and simple overall design of him with his green pants, trident, long hair and beard similar to what has been posted online. He was a lot of fun to work on. Very well cast in my opinion as well as Wonder Woman too.

For the Robin suit that you briefly see floating in a glass cage Michael Wilkinson mixed a bit of the classic with the new 52 look. I was very lucky and fortunate to work on these iconic superheroes I grew up loving and such a big fan of. To help bring them to life on the big screen was a dream come true and I'm very proud of how they look. Jose Fernandez, owner of Ironhead Studios did a lot of the practical costume fabrication on the main characters especially Batman and Wonder Woman and fans have responded very positively to their overall look. Truly the best work on all these characters.

Along side working on the superhero characters, production designer Patrick Tatopoulos allowed me and Jerad through Michael to do some Doomsday design work knowing our creature background. To add to the exploration that Vance Kovacs and Patrick were doing.

Vance and I had gotten some traction and I mixed in some of what Zack liked from Vance and I. In the end, I believe Patrick's design ended up on screen. Jerad did some amazing options that were close to the comic, but the spikes were a hurdle and Zack didn't want them to be so prominent where they take over the overall look of him as he is first born but protrude as he gets stronger and bigger to make sense of them without looking so stylized and keep the serious tone of the film.

MM: Was there a particular design you found the most challenging?
CS: In my opinion, they're all challenging any time you bring an iconic character like this to life. You want to stay true to the source material and update them to be believable in their setting. Michael Wilkinson had such a good initial overall rough pass at all the characters and a great costume concept team that we all worked together to help in any challenge or difficulty.

In my personal process if I have any problems I just go back to the source material in the comics and usually find a good solution. That's basically how I overcome those challenges.
Batman v Superman (2016) concept art by Constantine Sekeris

MM:
CS: Working on Wonder Woman, costume designer Michael Wilkinson started with a lot of comic source material to capture her iconic look. When I was tasked to work on Wonder Woman Michael already had a really good rough sketch of her to start from. From there we broke each part of the costume down and really spent time detailing and refining her costume in depth doing versions of her line work on her torso piece.
Batman v Superman (2016) concept art by Constantine Sekeris

From there breaking that down and doing version after version on her trim chest eagle detail and continuing in depth with the same process on the gauntlets, boots, tiara, skirt and so forth. What helped the most with her look was that Zack Snyder story-wise had her be a Mediterranean look and that she finds her costume from her heritage. Again, it was amazing to work on her and help bring her to life.

She looks bad a**. And sexy at the same time.

MM: As a costume concept artist/creature designer what are the differences in your working process?
CS: As a costume concept artist I get hired by a costume designer and work with them and help realize their vision. Each costume designer works very differently and so I accommodate to each the best I can to be versatile for them and help illustrate or build the characters in 3D and really break down that specific character.

With my background stemming from practical FX designing and building costumes and creatures back in the day. These days studios will call me to help do some initial pitch art work to help develop a project very early on to see if it's something pursuing with their limited budget. If it's something of interest then a production designer and costume designer will be hired and really design it from scratch.

These days when I get an opportunity like that I do more than just character and creature work I also do keyframes as well so you see these creatures and characters in their environment and see the tone the studio is going for and exploring.

As a creature designer, I will either get a call from a producer and or production designer and mainly focus on all the creature work.Whether it be a makeup design or a digital creature design where then I will work in 3D and then pass my model onto VFX or for previs. I usually like to start with rough sketches to get a general idea of the silhouette and design then I jump into Zbrush and flesh it out in detail all around.

So the studio, director or anyone involved can see the creature character orthographically. I will get it close to photoreal as possible.

MM: Where will we see your work next?
CS: Next you'll see some of my work in the next Thor movie Thor: Ragnarok (2017), Black Panther (2018) and now I'm currently working on the Avatar sequels.

Check out Justice League concept art by various artists including Ian Joyner!

The highly anticipated Justice League (2017) movie is coming and a French museum exhibit is giving us our best look yet at the intricate design of Flash's costume. The "The Art of DC - The dawn of Superheroes" exhibit in France has 300 designs from the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) films. While it's hard to tell all the talented artists involved, one identified is Ian Joyner.

Ian Joyner is a professional freelance concept designer who's worked on Hollywood movies like Thor (2011),  The Amazing Spider-Man (2012) and Captain America: The First Avenger (2011).

Ezra Miller plays Barry Allen aka The Flash a super-fast superhero in the film. The design isn't exactly like the movie version we've seen so far (see below) and we know at some point Batman's company WayneTech makes a more movie accurate suit for him, but it's a great design. Since Flash moves so fast it's hard to get a good look at it. But the artwork highlights the high-grade polymer used to make the Flash suit and the intricacy of the metallic wiring.

Here are some more images from the exhibit including a wonderful team painting including Cyborg, Flash, Wonder Woman, Superman, Batman, and Aquaman.

He also shared an image of an unused Batman design for Batman v Superman.
"This was a very early pass on the #batmanvssuperman #batsuit," he said "Before we got the note to do a classic #Batman I was exploring futuristic and techy options. I think the exploration only lasted for about a week and was so excited when we were told to do a classic Batman suit."

"Early #parademons #concept sculpt for #justiceleague," he added "This was some early exploration for the film. I really liked the versions that showed up in the final film. Much more Kirby and designed by the one and only [Patrick Tatopoulos]"

"Here’s more #cyborg #conceptart from #justiceleague done for #costumedesigner @michaelwilkinson," Jerad said on Instagram. "This was an extensive process with several versions and a lot of exploration. This show really challenged the way that I work and approach concept art. Techniques that I developed on this film have now completely taken over the way I work. I’ll always be grateful for how this project pushed me and how much I learned through this process."

"This is an alternate concept design I did on the film of the former Black Panther, T’Chaka!," Park said on Instagram. "I HAD to do a version w/his classic cape look from the comics."
Black Panther (2018) concept art by Andy Park

"Here’s the T’Chaka sans helmet concept design I did for #BlackPanther," Park said, "I didn’t even realize that @atandwakani was the real-life son of the older T’Chaka actor John Kani. Very cool! This was a fun character to design."

Here's what Black Panther looked like back when Jack Kirby first designed him. Notice the dramaic cape.

Black Panther (2018) concept art by Andy Park

"This is the approved concept design that I did of the former Black Panther, the king of Wakanda, T’Chaka!" Park added. "What an honor it was to get to do this design! I didn’t get to work on this film beyond this character since I was busy leading Marvel Studios’ Visual Development department on Thor: Ragnarok at the time. But a big thanks to [Ryan Meinerding] who was leading Black Panther at the time & he asked me to help out and do some versions of this character. I was more than happy to oblige. Ryan Coogler, the director, wanted us to try putting some clothing on him so I did a lot of research on African wraps, tunics & pants that can go along with the Black Panther look I was going for. [Rodney Fuentebella] designed a kind of tunic that the director liked so I incorporated that into the top part of his clothing. I was trying to come up with a design that was still high tech but less so than T’Challa’s Civil War look- thus the visible tactical vest. This was so much fun!

Black Panther's Costume

On his personal Instagram account Jerad S. Marantz described it as "early [Black Panther concept art]". He said he "tried to incorporate Ryan's Meinerding's design language he established in the original design from [Captain America: Civil War]."

"Back view of a black panther design option. This was an option I did for the film."

"This pass was about using very minimal armor and really just seeing what we could do with fabric alone. The director wanted to see this option. In the early days of the comic Black Panther had a half mask briefly."

Shuri's Gauntlets

Constantine Sekeris is a professional concept artist who's worked on cinema films like Batman v Superman: Dawn of JusticeThor: The Dark World, and The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.

"Here is an early exploration [of] Shuri costume concept design for her battle scene [at] the end of the film for Black Panther," Constantine said on his personal Instagram account. "I did some early passes at her costume design based on a design language established by Ryan Meinerding and Adi Granov.....for the final design of the film Tully Summers designed her costume."

"Here is the final gauntlet design for Shuri in Black Panther for her battle scene at the end of the film," he said adding "Her gauntlets were a challenge for me. [With] Ryan's art direction I was able to finalize this design for the film...I want to also mention that without my good friend Jerad Marantz showing tips in ZBrush I wouldn't be able to do this complicated layering and [technical] detail for this gauntlet."

Justice League is now on DVD. While the movie got mixed reviews it was often praised for its inventive visual style. Batman has a new arsenal of amazing weapons and equipment.

Recently, one of the talented artists working on the film shared some of his illustrations. Ed Natividad is a professional concept artist who's worked on big budget projects like Transformers: Age of Extinction, Man of Steel, andThe Amazing Spider-Man (2012).

"Justice League" Bat-Cycle Concept Art

One piece of Batman's equipment that wasn't shown in Justice League is the Batcycle. The Batcycle wasn't seen in the movie. Instead, Batman relied on his Batmobile, a carrier named "The Flying Fox" and an armored transport nicknamed "Nightcrawler" or "Knight Crawler".

Ed Natividad recently shared artwork of the unused cycle and it was picked up by Chris Begley at Batman-News.

I reached out to Ed to find out why the Batcycle wasn't used in the film. "The Batcycle was proposed as a new form of transport for Batman," Natividad said. "However it was superseded in favor of the Knight Crawler. Zack Snyder felt the cycle did not reflect the 'team' dynamic and needed something that would carry at least three of the members."

Begley pointed out that it's very similar to a design shared by production designer Patrick Tatopoulos on Instagram.

The Batcycle was prominently used on the 60's TV show and a variation of it used in the Christopher Nolan film The Dark Knight.

Recently director Gary Whitta shared some concept art from a new project based on the 80s cult classic The Last Starfighter. "Okay, probably shouldn’t show you this so early but here’s a little something I’ve been tinkering on with my co-writer Jonathan Betuel," he said on Twitter. "You might recognize the ships. Thanks to the amazing Matt Allsopp (lead concept artist on ROGUE ONE) for creating these images for us."

Matt Allsop is a professional concept artist who's worked on Hollywood movies like Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and Godzilla (2014).

The Gunstar is a space fighter used by the fleet. Whitta describes these as "Gunstar II (blue and gold squadron variants). A streamlined upgrade of the original Grig/Rogan prototype, it has superior speed, maneuverability, armament, and next-generation Death Blossom".

Here's what it looked like in the original film.

Here are some more designs of various scenes from the film.

Whitta has been close-lipped about what it will be about but promises it's a "fully developed story that is a combination of reboot and sequel that we both think honors the legacy of the original film while passing the torch to a new generation".
