Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) concept art by Jerad S. Marantz

Check out my interview with Guardians of the Galaxy concept artist Jerad S. Marantz!

Recently, movie goers were surprised when theaters started playing Rise of the Guardians instead of Guardians of the Galaxy. On Twitter they said people were crying. Why? Because, as wonderful as Rise of the Guardians probably is, it doesn't hold a candle to the blockbuster hit. This week I've featured a bunch of interviews with concept artists that worked on the film and the latest one to talk with me is my buddy Jerad Marantz.

Jerad S. Marantz is a professional concept artist who's worked on big budget films like Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014), I Am Legend (2007) andThe Amazing Spider-Man (2012)

Maurice Mitchell: I've always wondered what it was like working with the in-house Marvel design team. What was it like working on Guardians of the Galaxy?
JM: Guardians of the Galaxy was a phenomenal project to work on. For this show I was working in-house over at Marvel Studios. The artists over there are easily some of the best in the industry and working with them was incredibly exciting and humbling at the same time. Charlie Wen, Ryan Meinerding, Anthony Francisco, Josh Herman, Kevin Chen, Andy Park, Jackson Sze, Rodney Fuentebella, Rob Mckinnon, Andrew Kim, and Justin Sweet were the artists that I had the pleasure of working with. During my time there, I was able to learn something from each of them. I feel like I came out of that studio a better artist.

I was art directed by Charlie Wen. I got all of my feedback from him. He was a joy to work with. I have no idea how he was able to direct so many artists and contribute so much to the show at the same time.

I spent the majority of my time on the Sakaraan Soldiers design for the film. The wonderful thing about working in that studio is that everybody gets a chance to work on characters. Regardless of how big the role of the character is everybody gets a stab at it. I was fortunate enough to get the soldiers because the director responded mostly to my artwork. There were a ton of great designs for these characters done by other artists that can be seen in the book. A concept that my friend Anthony Francisco did was one of my favorites.

MM: Was there a design that stands out as challenging in your mind?
Doing the soldiers was a big challenge. It was a practical costume that had to fit many extras. It took me months of revisions with Charlie and the costume designer Alexandra Byrne, to finally get it right. I was really impressed with how they looked on screen.

I did have the opportunity to do a few designs for the other characters in the film but, because I was so focused on the Sakaaran soldiers, the other concepts where just first passes.

MM: What was the most enjoyable design that you worked on for this film?
The most fun I had on the project, aside from the soldiers, was designing background aliens for the many scenes in the film. It was a great chance to just go wild and I can't remember the last time I had that much fun on a project.

Sylvain Despretz' Brilliant Concept Art for Ridley Scott's Unmade I AM LEGEND

I Am Legend concept art by Sylvain Despretz
Check out I Am Legend concept art and storyboards by Sylvain Despretz!

Every Friday I feature artwork from a classic of science fiction cinema or television. This week's "Flashback Friday" post is on the unmade I Am Legend(1998) movie.

Recently, some special effects videos from the proposed I Am Legend film by special effects artists Tom Woodruff Jr and Alec Gillis  showed up online and it started me thinking about the project. So, I dug out some old artwork and interviews.

I Am Legend is a 1954 horror fiction novel written by Richard Matheson. Since then it's been adapted into movies several successful movies like The Last Man on Earth (1964), The Omega Man (1971) and I Am Legend(2007). Back in 1995, Warner Brothers began developing an adaptation with Ridley Scott directing and starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. It was supposed to be a sophisticated, dark, artsy and psychological film with minimal dialogue. Unfortunately, as the $100 million budget kept climbing, the studio shut down the project. Scott went on to make the wildly successful Gladiator. One of the artists Scott worked with to visualize the film was Sylvain Despretz and he shared concept art and did an interview years ago about the project.

Sylvain Despretz is a freelance director-screenwriter who's worked on Hollywood projects likeThe Fifth Element(1997), TRON: Legacy (2010) and the unmade live-action Akiramovie.

Click on the images to enlarge. Warning: Some of the artistic pieces are female nudes and NSFW

According to the UK Magazine SFX, after working on the abandoned Tim Burton Superman Lives film, Sylvain Despretz ran into famed Alien director Ridley Scott on the Warner Bros back lot. "I ran into Ridley Scott and so went over to say hello and at one point in the conversation he said, grinning, 'So how are you enjoying Superman?' And I said, 'Well...' And he explained that he was here with I Am Legend, this big Schwarzenegger picture that I had only just read about. I was given an open invitation to drop by and look around which I did that very afternoon." He rang up the office, sent over some storyboard samples and got hired.

He'd heard of the book and film, but really wanted to work with the legendary director. "I had seen The Omega Man in the 70s," recalls Despretz. "I always remembered that tremendous opening scene with Charlton Heston rolling down a deserted Los Angeles and crashing his car into a dealership and getting into another one. Personally, I thought it was a bit odd that they were remaking the film, but at the end of the day I didn't care because Ridley Scott was making another science fiction film and I wanted to be on it."

Despretz joined a small art department that included The Matrix concept artist Tani Kunitake under the supervision of production designer Arthur Max (Seven). He acclimated himself to the project and the Ridley Scott experience. "Ridley had been away in England for a couple of weeks," recalls Despretz, "and I had the chance to read the script and the book. When he came back we had an 8:30am meeting and he sat down and said, 'So, scene one', and we just started going at it. He had the first scene completely sketched out and talked me through it, noting which buildings were not going to be used. He would talk about certain elements he was considering that I would then take away to work them up to a level that would be practical. Then you can hand them to people and not only discuss the terms of where action is going to be placed, but also what the subtle elements of the action are."

He insists all credit for the work he did belongs to Ridley Scott saying, "They're not mine, they're Ridley's. He explains it very precisely because he knows what he's doing. He doesn't just tell me what to do, he also sketches it. He does little diagrams telling me where the camera is and what we will be looking at. Ridley is a better storyboard artist than almost any working storyboard artist in the business. If you look at his drawings, they’re stunning. You can see the juice of the composition; he just knows what he wants and he’s good at it. Usually he’s very random. He’ll kind of dream up scenes. His favourite thing to say is, ‘Okay, I thought this scene would open like this. I don’t know why but instinctively I see it this way.’ And that’s how it starts.”

The Will Smith movie retained many elements from Ridley Scott's version. For example, the world was decimated by a vaccine for cancer and, unlike the book, the creatures that Neville fought weren't vampires, but zombie-like creatures. The focal point of Neville’s survival is his continuing conflict with the Hemocytes. In the book the creatures were vampires, while the film representations resembled zombies. Despretz said Ridley Scott wanted a film that was more like hard SF. "Arthur [Max] had done tons of research on starvation and burn victims," says Despretz. "There were some very gory photographs that we looked at depicting different deficiencies and illness. We also went through many documentaries because Ridley told us he wanted an emaciated look, and was thinking about using CGI to give actors a skeletal appearance. I found this extraordinary medical book on skinless bodies - atrocious stuff - and everyone thought it was great to use. We also looked at Third Reich photographer Leni Riefenstahl’s Nubian portraits because Ridley was really into their tribal paints. He felt that the Hemocytes had some level of sophistication; although you didn’t know exactly how sophisticated they were, they were definitely using symbols and body paints while being clothed in rags.”

While there are "many, many rumors" why the film project was cancelled, Despretz insists that most are wrong. Despretz sighed, "It started with the actor’s fee being too expensive. The thing you have to keep in mind is that if a $100 million dollar film spends one fifth of its budget on the star it suffers. That’s one fifth that can’t be allocated to either visual effects or sets and that seriously compromises the ability to make the film and everybody was unanimous that the film needed to be more expensive.

"I think there was also another problem that nobody could agree to what the film was saying. I think the studio thought a lot about the picture and debated about the point of making it. They were afraid of an apocalyptic story which did not have an upbeat ending; they were really scared of that. It was a film that basically had an actor, a dog and a bunch of dead bodies walking around. At one point someone at the studio actually said, ‘We like the script, we just don’t think there’s enough people in it’. While someone else said ‘We need a romantic interest’.”

Despite the studios meddling, Despretz insists the film would have been brilliant. “If Ridley could have done what he wanted it would have been a terrific film,” says Despretz. “It would have been a stunning mood piece, unlike anything that anyone would have expected or had been released. It was way beyond an action movie. It had action in it, but the film didn’t depend on it. The character of Neville was so original. Ridley had very interesting ideas on how to use him and his nature as an architect. By the time he’d become the last man on earth he had actually turned his home into an incredible museum of beautiful paintings and gorgeous structures. He had gone to the Getty Museum and had just taken Monet paintings and put them in his house.”

Check out leaked Star Wars: Episode VII concept art of Han Solo and Stormtroopers!

Indie Revolver is posting concept art they claim are leaked from the upcoming Star Wars sequel. One of my sources says they couldn't confirm or deny it or they'll send the Stormtroopers after them. So, take it with a grain of salt. While the Stormtrooper helmet one looks OK, the Han Solo one looks very fake indeed.

Guardians of the Galaxy"Nebula" concept art by Andy Park

Check out Guardians of the Galaxy concept art by Andy Park!

In Guardians of the Galaxy Zoe Saldana plays Gamora, the alien assassin and daughter of the Mad Titan Thanos. The design went through many many stages as they tried hard to balance the look from the comics and the modern movie-going audience. Saldana told ScreenRant she had "maybe seven or eight camera tests" while they tested different make-up looks. In then end, she said "what we had to do, when it came to all the characters and for mine specifically it was, 'How alien do we want Gamora to look like?' And what I was thinking was, 'She just needs to be pretty.'

"And that’s usually a thing that I don’t think about with other characters that I play but for some reason because I was going to be green and I was going to be the lead girl, I just wanted teenage boys to find me attractive. I don’t know why I was stressing this a lot but I really was when we were testing. That’s where I was coming from, everybody else was just like, 'Contacts? Do we dye the hair? Wig? No wig? What color hair? How long is it?' I’m like, 'Pretty. Teenage boys, please. We gotta get their vote.'"

She looks amazing even after two to three hours in a make-up chair. One of the artists that helped develop the look of her character was Andy Park. He recently shared some concept art via his Twitter and Facebook account.

Andy Park is a professional concept artist who's worked on Hollywood blockbusters like
Thor: The Dark World(2013), Iron Man 3(2013) and the upcoming Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015).

Here's what Gamora and Nebula looked like in the film

Gamora

"Most of my time on Guardians of the Galaxy was spent designing Gamora. There were a lot of challenges throughout the process. She's gotta feel alien, but still very attractive. Deadly, yet delicate. Tattoos? [Cybernetics? Prosthetics?] How human to make her, costumes, etc. I enjoyed the whole process." - Andy Park

"This image was fun to do depicting the two sisters back to back." - Andy Park

"I got to explore a lot of different looks for Gamora on Guardians of the Galaxy and this was definitely one of my favorites. It was pretty early in the process so it wasn't required that she be green yet. I was kinda pushing for a more purple/lavender color palette. I thought it would be more appealing. But at the end of the day I'm glad they went with green to keep all the hard-core fans happy." - Andy Park

Nebula

Check out Captain America: The Winter Soldier concept art by Andrew Kim!

The Captain America 2 movie has been one of the biggest films of 2014, so it's no surprise that a Captain America 3 is in the works. Directors Anthony and Joe Russo are coming back for the sequel and Anthony recently talked to Movies.com about where the character is headed. "As far as where else we want to take the character, we just want to keep moving Cap forward," says Anthony. "We wanted to push the character forward into the modern age with The Winter Soldier, and we want to keep pushing the character forward. We always want to be true to who Captain America is, but we want to surprise people about where he can go and what he's capable of. That's about as specific as I can get about where we might take him." He promises fans are going to "freak out" about it.  What made the first film so powerful were the mind-blowing visuals and one of the many artists that worked on the film was Andrew Kim.

Kim is a professional concept illustrator for games, films, and theme parks who's worked on major projects like Thor: The Dark World (2013), God of War III and the upcoming Ant-Man (2015). As a bonus, here are a couple of illustrations from Guardians of the Galaxyand  Thor: The Dark World.

UFO (1970) concept art by Derek Meddings

Check out UFOconcept art by Keith Wilson, Derek Meddings and Mike Trim!

Every Friday I try to feature artwork from a classic of science fiction cinema or television. This week's "Flashback Friday" post is on the television show UFO (1970).

UFO is a 1970 British television science fiction series about an alien invasion of Earth, created by Gerry Anderson and Sylvia Anderson with Reg Hill. It aired in the UK, Canada and in US syndication over the next two years. UFO only lasted one season, but aired 26 episodes thanks to the British TV schedule. Gerry Anderson was famous for making several successful children's science fiction series using marionettes (or "Supermarionation" as he called them), including Supercar, Thunderbirdsand Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons. But, this one was the Andersons' first fully live-action TV series. Three men produced some wonderful artwork for the film that I wanted to share today.

Click on the images to enlarge.

The series was set in the "near future" of the 1980s where aliens have invaded and are secretly harvesting human organs. A secret, high-tech agency called SHADO (Supreme Headquarters, Alien Defence Organisation), led by Commander Edward Straker (Ed Bishop) was tasked with protecting Earth. The special effects and stories were highly ambitious and rivaled major motion pictures of the time.

Keith Wilson was an award-winning production designer who also worked on legendary projects like Space: 1999 (1975). Special effects designer Derek Meddings worked on major films like James Bond and Superman. Mike Trim is a professional illustrator and model-maker who's worked on Thunderbirds (2004), and All About 'Thunderbirds' (2008).

This weekend aired the second episode of Doctor Who season 8 titled "Into the Dalek." The numbers are strong and Den of Geek called it "one of the most downright enjoyable episodes of Who in the past year or two." The visuals are a big part of the episode and one storyboard artist that helped director Ben Wheatley visualize the episode is James Iles. He sent me some storyboards from one of the most powerful scenes in the episode when they enter the terrifying world of the Dalek's interior. The episode is great and the special effects are some of the best in years, but the storyboards show a slightly more horrifying look for the Dalek and the "antibodies."

Iles is a UK based professional storyboard and concept artist who's worked on big budget projects like Doctor Who, The Amityville Asylum (2013) and Outcasts (2011).

James Gunn had a very specific look he wanted for Guardians of the Galaxy. When guiding the artsists through his vision he created a detailed, nineteen page visual guide that covered everything from where to use the color yellow to Chris Foss paintings. He told Film Divider, "The document was talking about the injection of colour, and being able to use a bright colour palette that, usually people are very afraid of, and to be very bold and brazen in every way. When Alien and Blade Runner came along they made everything very dark, but I loved the pulp colours of the 50s and 60s. I liked the griminess and dirtiness that Alien especially brought in, but I wanted to mix that with the bright colours."

I've yet to see a more perfect example of this mix of dark and light than in concept artist Kev Jenkins portfolio from the film.

Kev Jenkins is a professional concept artist who's worked on big budget hits like Thor: The Dark World (2013) Edge of Tomorrow (2014) and Superman Returns (2006)

"Before I joined ILM I contributed to Guardians of the Galaxy.  Hired by the production at the beginning of the show I developed images For Morag, Xandar and Knowhere.

"I designed the Knowhere Robot Head and have included the image chosen by Marvel that inspired the direction. I also Designed and worked on the Zbrush sculpt that VFX used in their DMP's using an initial sculpt I did for the concept paintings. After seven months in pre-production I then hired a team and spent three months creating all the concept assets under my direction while I provided lighting studies for VFX to follow.

"Tip of the hat to my old friend Fred Gambino and Chris Cook who joined me designing assets through the summer. Big thanks to all the 70's and 80's book jacket illustrators that inspired me on this show, Chris Foss,  Chris Moore,  Peter Elson and many others." - Kev Jenkins

The young adult novel The Maze Runner by James Dashner, about a boy who wakes up with no memory in a mysterious maze, is already a best-selling novel. The upcoming movie looks to be a blockbuster hit. 20th Century Fox is so confident that they've already started work on the sequel, The Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials. "We’ve got stages, we’ve got crews coming in, Dylan [O’Brien] will be back in a few weeks, we’re building sets, and the script is being written,"The Maze Runner director Wes Ball told BuzzFeed. "It’s a bit of a race this time because we’re cautiously optimistic, but we’re feeling excited we’re about to do something that’s way more sophisticated, way more grown up, and really set up a saga here."

One of the artists that worked on the film, Wayne John Haag, has shared some gorgeous concept art from the movie. If it's half as good as the artwork, it should rock.

Wayne Haag is a professional concept artist and matte painter who's worked on Hollywood movies like The Wolverine(2013), Superman Returns (2006) and The Fifth Element (1997).

The third episode of Doctor Who season 8 called "Robots of Sherwood" aired. One storyboard artist that helped visualize the episode is James Iles. Last week he sent me some great boards from "Into the Dalek". This week he was kind enough to send me a couple of storyboards from the latest episode.

Iles is a UK based professional storyboard and concept artist who's worked on big budget projects like Doctor Who , The Amityville Asylum (2013) and Outcasts (2011).

Writer Mark Gatiss told Doctor Who Magazine that he wanted "to do the Doctor and Robin Hood in 45 minutes". He added "The premise is inherently funny, but I didn't think of it as the funnier episode when I was doing it. It's still asking big questions. But it's definitely more frivolous."

See Neytiri's Bold Unused Look in AVATAR Costume Concept Art by Paul Tobin

Avatar (2008) concept art by Paul Tobin
Check out Avatar concept art by Paul Tobin!

The costume design and clothing for James Cameron's Avatar was stunning and Mayes C. Rubeo and Deborah Lynn Scott were nominated for a Costume Designers Guild Awardin 2010. While the final designs were digital the two still needed real-world skills. "It’s the same process with an extra technical element," Scott told the Costume Designers Guild, "It’s exactly how a Costume Designer works every day, but the end result is not a physical body, but an animated body." One of the many talented artists that worked on the designs for Avatar was Paul Tobin. He shared some amazing concept art for Weta Digital that makes the designs in the film look tame by comparison.

Tobin is a professional concept artist, designer and scuplter who's worked on Hollywood projects like King Kong (2005), The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2012) and The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (2005).

Click on the images to enlarge.

"So these were done a few years back now at Weta Workshop. With the film not only out but announcing a hopeful sequel I figured it was high time to finally post them. I thought I would start with some Na'vi designs first." - Paul Tobin

"Weta Workshop was asked to help design the Na'vi culture and cultural artifacts like costume and weapons. It was an interesting process, as approved designs are usually designed and made at the workshop and then eventually end up on set. This time round designs were still created but only to be used as a reference at Weta Digital. (Some were used on the motion capture stage as well). Because of the digital process the design process continued and evolved well into post-production." - Paul Tobin

"Neytiri costume design. This had the dubious honour of being Weta's first piece of design on the film. James actually quite liked this and I think parts of it (the yellow halter) made it into the film." - Paul Tobin

"Keeping it in the family, this was a costume design for Eytukan, Neytiri's father.  The big shoulders were not a 80's throw back but rather an attempt to make him imposing and the basic design was used in parts." - Paul Tobin

"This was a knife design for Tsu'tey, which could be used in a normal way, or held along the arm allowing for the point to act as a punch dagger and the leading edge to slash. When designing weapons it can be fun to try to give a stunt performers something a little unusual to help create more memorable action sequences." - Paul Tobin

"In addition to the Na'vi we also did some early design work on the human costuming as well to get the ball rolling. James favoured a very real world approach to the costume design which comes across so well in the final costuming. He would often reference the Vietnam war in terms of look for the soldiers and the level of gritty realism. For ground personnel the reflective stripes became a very practical feature that you could build a strong graphic identifier into." - Paul Tobin

"On one of James' few trips to see us in the Design Room in NZ,  I presented this Op Center concept to him. I pointed out that the trousers had built-in leg zips so some of them could be wearing shorts as a option as the base is in a tropical zone. After a moments thought he turned to me and the production designer and said that there will categorically be no shorts in his film.... as is often the case in concept design even a total fail can still yield good information. There were no shorts in the making of this film...." - Paul Tobin

"All costumes needed to incorporate the emergency mask which Leri designed, which is a good example of collaborative design. On this costume I started to have some fun with designing a breathable weave made from the RDA logo pattern for the shoes. Lets face it Pandora is hot, d**n hot and who wants stinky feet!" - Paul Tobin

Check out Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles storyboards by Charles Ratteray!

The Michael Bay reboot of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise is a hit. Paramount Film Group President Adam Goodman said that "launching a new take on the 'Turtles' into the feature film world was a daunting task" that paid off. He told Deadline Hollywood, "We felt a great responsibility to ensure audiences were going to experience everything they loved about the 'Turtles,' while also getting to see them brought to life in a way they had never been seen before. The result exceeded our high expectations and the response to the film is beyond great, making it all the more fun to get started on the continuation of their story." So, a sequel set for June 3, 2016. Till then, we can see storyboards of one key scene that had the turtles meeting with April O'Neil (Megan Fox). One of the skilled storyboard artists on the film, Charles Ratteray, recently shared some storyboards on his Facebook page and they're awesome. I love the anime style that reminds me of the original comic books.

Terrifying Vintage KING KONG 1933 Concept Art by Mario Larrinaga and Byron Crabbe

Check out King Kong (1933) concept illustrations by Mario Larrinaga and Byron Crabbe!

Every Friday I feature artwork from a classic of science fiction cinema. This week's "Flashback Friday" post is on King Kong (1933)

In 1933, Merian C. Cooper approached an executive to finance his King Kong movie saying, "You know what a 50-foot gorilla would see in a five-foot girl? His breakfast!" Cooper had a dream to make a monster movie based on books he'd read about terrifying gorillas hidden in the jungles of Africa. Cooper took his idea to Paramount Studios, but executives turned him down. The idea of paying to send film crews to Africa and Komodo during the Great Depression seemed too risky. But years later he tried again at RKO using stop-motion animation. When Merian C. Cooper was getting a presentation for RKO executives to make his big gorilla movie he had Mario Larrinaga and Byron Crabbe make production paintings of different scenes. These paintings sold the movie and helped bring the immortal tale of King Kong to life.

Mario Larrinaga and  Byron Linden Crabbe were professional artists who worked on screen classics like The Son of Kong (1933) Gone with the Wind (1939) and Seven Wonders of the World (1959).

Thor: The Dark World concept art by Jon McCoy
Check out Thor: The Dark World concept art by Jon McCoy!

The big difference between the look of Asgard in the first Thor and the second was that the director Alan Taylor wanted a grittier look to the world. "The main difference I have [from Branagh's approach] is really to do with look and tone." Taylor told Total Film magazine, "Things look really dirty. The first Thor was quite shiny and it was a very conscious, smart choice. When I came in, I wanted to get more of a sense of the Norse mythology: the Viking quality, the texture and weight of the history." Director of photography Kramer Morgenthau also told HD VideoPro, "We wanted a grittier, boots-on-the-ground feeling, inspired by what Alan and I had done on Game of Thrones. We wanted the realms to feel grounded, like a real place, while at the same time respecting the magical 'planet of the Gods' feeling and theme." That said, the world of Asgard is still very shiny and the designs show that. One of the artists that helped build that more "grounded" world of Asgard was Jon McCoy.

McCoy is a professional concept artist who's worked on Hollywood movies like X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014), Wrath of the Titans (2012) and World War Z (2013).

Guardians of the Galaxy had a huge opening and is currently the highest grossing domestic film of 2014. This is big considering that the year has been a slow one. "This movie just couldn't have come at a better time," said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for box-office tracker Rentrak. "When we were really down and out in the summer box office — at one point down 20 percent from last year — 'Guardians' came along and injected life. What is surprising is that it was a film launched in August." It's ironic that the strangest, biggest gamble of the year turned out to be the biggest one. The film was supported by a dream team of artists and one of them was Anthony Francisco. He shared some illustrations on his Facebook page using his unique and colorful painting style.

Francisco is a professional concept artist who's worked on blockbuster films such as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2014), G.I. Joe: Retaliation (2013) and Spider-Man (2002). He shared some unused designs for Groot, The Collector, Korath and more.

"Here are some concepts from Guardians of the Galaxy, the first movie I was placed on when I started work a year and a half ago at Marvel Studios. I am so happy it is doing so well. When people would ask me what I was working on they would always not know what I was talking about. But Marvel and James Gunn did an awesome job spreading awareness of the relatively unknown property. I feel so lucky getting to work on the project with Marvel Visual Development team. The baby groot creature design was one of my favorites to work on and I am glad that people enjoyed the movie as much as I had fun working on it." - Anthony Francisco

Check out Flash Gordon concept art by Chris Foss!

Every Friday I feature artwork from a classic of science fiction cinema. This week's "Flashback Friday" post is on Flash Gordon (1980)

The movie Flash Gordon has some insane visuals thanks to art director Danilo Donati but there's one design that was almost even more inspired thanks to master illustrator Chris Foss. The live-action movie based on the long-running Alex Raymond comic strip told the story of a football player "Flash" Gordon who gets kidnapped to the alien planet Mongo and fights the evil dictator Ming. In the film, the Hawkmen give Flash Gordon a Rocket Sled (Space Scooter) that he rides into battle.

Chris Foss is a professional concept illustrator who's worked on classic Hollywood movies like Alien (1979), A.I. Artificial Intelligence (2001) and Jodorowsky's unmade Dune (2013).

Click on the images to enlarge.

Foss talked about working on the film in a YouTube video. The whole video is worth watching, but here are some highlights. He said, "Dino De Laurentiis called me when Flash Gordon was almost ready to go into production and asked me to come and see them in the studios because he wanted new versions of some of the designs that had already been done, which he obviously didn't like. And, specifically, he wanted me to redesign the 'Space Scooter.'

"I saw Dino De Laurentiis, he gave me a verbal brief. I was then taken down to the department that was physically building the stuff and we discussed what this thing was supposed to do in the film. And I then went away and, over a long holiday, produced the designs for it."

Foss said it was the only thing that he designed for the film and was left to do it his way. "I would have designed the cycle because he had to stand up and he had to have handlebars." Foss said, "So logic would have dictated the rest of the design. It was a working design.

He postulates that his designs inspired the design of modern Jet Skis.

Here's the video interview on Foss' YouTube channel.

Here are some of the unused designs:

Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) concept art by Ryan Meinerding
Check out Guardians of the Galaxy concept art by Ryan Meinerding!

One of the biggest surprises in Guardians of the Galaxy was the cameo of Howard the Duck in the end-credits. Howard the Duck is a comic book character created by writer Steve Gerber and artist Val Mayerik who first appeared in Adventure into Fear #19 (1973). It wasn't originally supposed to be in the movie at all and the design happened very quickly. The man they turned to to redesign the iconic character in just two days was Ryan Meinerding.

Meinerding is a conceptual artist and Visual Development Supervisor for Marvel Studios who's worked on major films like Captain America: The First Avenger, ThorandIron Man and he shared some early concept art on his Facebook page.

Click on the images to enlarge.

"We had one plan for the first tag, and another for the second tag." director James Gunn told Empire Magazine. "Originally, we were going to put Baby Groot dancing at the very end of the movie. But we kept trying to think of different things. We had a bunch of stuff with Cosmo (The Space Dog, the Russian cosmonaut dog glimpsed in the movie and again in the end sting), and different ideas, and I think it was some combination of me and the editor Fred Raskin who said, 'Let’s put Howard The Duck in there.' What if The Collector looks over and sees Howard The Duck sitting there? And I wrote down the line, 'Whaddya let it lick you like that for? Gross.' Fred and I thought it was hilarious but we weren’t sure that (Head of Marvel Studios) Kevin Feige would go for it. But we told Kevin and Kevin couldn’t stop laughing. Every time he saw it, he was like, ‘We’re f***ing crazy! We’re f***ing crazy!’

"We decided to do it very late in the game, only a couple of months ago, and we had to design Howard that day. Then we gave him over to the visual effects company that did him. They did a good job very quickly – I think it was Sony."

Gunn talked Kevin Feige into letting his friend Seth Green voice the character saying, "I hang out with him a lot and we’ve been friends for a long time, over ten years now. I came up with a list of three guys I took to Kevin and said that these guys are all good friends, and I think they would come in and do it for me. He reacted really well to Seth Green."

The addition happened so quickly that not even Benecio Del Toro was aware Howard The Duck is in the scene. Gunn added, "Now I’m certain Benicio knows – I meant to text him this morning to see if he’s seen the ending tag that he’s in. I didn’t tell him and we didn’t show the tag at the premiere or any of the other places, and I didn’t tell Benicio. I thought it would be funny to just let him find out. He’s off doing his artistic things, I’m not sure he even knows."

Now, of course, everyone's asking if the character will star in his own movie after the ill-fated 1986 version. Gunn's not sure saying, "I’ll be honest with you, I was just talking about it with my assistant right now. It’s possible Howard could reappear as more of a character in the Marvel Universe. But if people think that’s going to lead to a Howard The Duck movie, that’s probably not going to happen in the next four years. Who knows after that?"

Check out Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials concept art by Wayne John Haag and Ken Barthelmey!

The Maze Runner is a hit making an estimated $32.5 million this last weekend and, as I said last week, the studio has already green-lit the sequel based on the second novel in the "Maze Runner" series "The Scorch Trials" by James Dashner. Sunday director Wes Ball tweeted the first concept art poster from the film and credited two artists: Wayne Haag and Ken Barthelmey.

Haag and Barthelmey are professional concept artists who've worked on Hollywood movies like The Maze Runner (2014), The Wolverine(2013) and Superman Returns (2006).
