Iron Man (2008) storyboards by Doug Brode
Check out Iron Man storyboards by Doug Brode!

When they were filming the blockbuster movie Iron Man they focused on the story and planning the action. So, the script wasn't done when they began filming. "They had no script, man... They had an outline." Jeff Bridges, who played Obadiah Stane, told In Contention, "We would show up for big scenes every day and we wouldn't know what we were going to say. We would have to go into our trailer and work on this scene and call up writers on the phone, 'You got any ideas?' Meanwhile the crew is tapping their foot on the stage waiting for us to come on."

Lots of scenes probably ended up on the cutting room floor. One scene that was cut was a longer version of the surgery scene to implant the arc reactor in Tony Stark's (Robert Downey, Jr) chest. In the movie it was a brief over-the-shoulder shot. But, in this storyboard by Doug Brode, it's a lot more intense.

Brode is a professional concept and storyboard artist who's worked on major films like Looper (2012), Planet of the Apes (2001) and Van Helsing (2004).

Rise of the Planet of the Apes and Dawn of Planet of the Apes: The Art of the Films* is a 173 page hardcover book by Titan Books published on July 8, 2014 to tie-in with the release of the film. It's written in English and is 12.1 x 11 x 0.8 inches (273 x 302 mm) and weighs in at a shipping weight of 3.3 pounds. It features full-color concept art, illustrations, photos, diagrams and with a foreward by director Matt Reeves.

Here's the official description: "The perfect companion for Planets of the Apes fans tying in in with the release of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, revealing the production photography and concept art behind Rise of the Planet of the Apes and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes."

The purpose of the book is to give insight into the making and development of the two films with it mainly focussing on the second film. The insights it provides are fascinating and you get to understand all the little details that go into making a film like this. From the set design, character design and special effects like the motion capture for the apes like Ceasar and the use of digital composited shots like the San Fransisco bridge. There are also posters from the films  and infographics detailing the spread of the disease. Unfortunately, they didn't list any of the artists that worked on the film or what artwork they produced, but I recognize several artists like Jerad S. Marantz, Claude Pare and Aaron Simms Company. Matt Hurwitz is a Los Angeles-based entertainment journalist who co-authored The Complete X-Files and writes from major magazines like Variety,The Hollywood Reporter and Reuters. Sharon Gosling has written several companion books for Stargate SG-1 and other properties. I couldn't find anything on Adam Newell, but the three of them have created a very insightful book on the making of a major motion picture.

The book is very study and has a textured feel to the cover that is broken by smooth parts for Caesar’s face and piercing eyes. The title is silver embossed and brilliant red. The pages are glossy and brilliantly colored with an easy-to-read font and well-designed layout.

It's a wonderful book and makes up for the missing artbook for the last film. You'll enjoy every minute of this book. My only warning is that it has spoilers from Rise of the Planet of the Apes and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, but you can enjoy 90% of the book without seeing the movie.

Batman (1989) Joker concept art by Bob Ringwood

Check out Batman costume concept art by Bob Ringwood!

Every Friday I try and feature artwork from a classic of science fiction cinema or television. This week's "Flashback Friday" post is on Batman(1989).

Today's post was from a request on my Facebook page by Yiğit Işık. If you have anything you'd like to see just let me know in the comments, Twitter or Facebook!

When Tim Burton set out to make Batman he was blazing new territory and turned to designer Bob Ringwood to help him create a new vision of the superhero. He admitted,"I had never even read a Batman comic. So I went out and bought about 200 of them from all the different time periods – including the really early ones – and studied them thoroughly… Then I closed the comics and started thinking about why a man would dress up as a bat – the whole idea is absurd – and I decided that to make it work, I had to come up with a bat that was dark and mysterious and sexy."

Bob Ringwood is a British professional Academy Award-winning costume designer who's worked on Hollywood films like Excalibur (1981), Alien³ (1992) and A.I. Artificial Intelligence (2001).

Click on the images to enlarge.

Ringwood decided to take a fresh look at the character, but still turned to the comic book's origins. "I had decided from the beginning that this ‘Batman’ was not going to be in blue knickers,” said costume designer Bob Ringwood. “I hated those. Bats are black, of course – not blue – and black is much more sinister and sexy. After talking to Batman creator Bob Kane, we found out that he had always thought of ‘Batman’ as being in black, but that it was very difficult to draw a black-on-black drawing for the comic strip. So he had drawn it in blue so that he could use different tones of the color for effect. In his mind, the blue was just a symbolic version of black. Our black costume was really nearer the original concept."

The concept behind the Joker costume is that it took Jack Nicholson's style and enhance it. ""He adores clothes," Ringwood said, "So all we did was just re-interpret the clothes that the Joker wears in the drawings to work with Nicholson's personality. To do clothes with him is a joy ride, really, because he just loves them. He is really with you and he's suggesting things and inventing things and doing things. He's wonderful."

The concept of everything in the film was that they were stuck in the 1940's and that design extended to everyone from Batman to the Gotham Police force.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes(2014) concept art by Joshua Min
Check out Dawn of the Planet of the Apesconcept art by Joshua Min!

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes picks up where Rise of the Planet of the Apes left off and production designer James Chinlund spent a long time trying to figure out where the apes would be in this film. He told MTV, "When I was first approached about the film, my mind immediately began to turn on the evolution of the Apes. As a Production Designer, the greatest challenge and most exciting opportunities are those that allow you to explore worlds that haven’t been visualized before. Trying to imagine how the Apes would take their next evolutionary steps and begin to formulate their civilization was an amazing opportunity for myself and my team." Part of Chinlund's team was concept artist Joshua Min who was there from the beginning. He talked with me a little bit about what it was like working on the film when Rupert Wyatt was working on it and the director changed to Matt Reeves.

Joshua Min is a professional concept and storyboard artist who's worked on major Hollywood movies like The Wolverine (2013), The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014) and 300: Rise of an Empire (2014)

"I was involved with the project when Rupert Wyatt was the director of the sequel," Joshua said, "I created tons of different apes variations for months and concept for the key scenes. He visioned apes to be more human like.  And later on when Matt took over the directing role we had start from the beginning again. But it was fun to work for both directors."

Min said it was a "great experience working for both Aaron Sims Company and the film" and was by far his "favorite project he's worked on" and "an honor" to be a part of the film..

The Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015) concept art poster by Ryan Meinerding, Charlie Wen and Andy Park
Check out the The Avengers: Age of Ultron concept art poster by Ryan Meinerding, Charlie Wen and Andy Park!

Over the weekend Marvel released a series of exclusive posters for Avengers 2 at San Diego Comic Con 2014. Just like in 2012, each stand-alone poster combined together into a single large poster.

Ryan Meinerding is a professional concept storyboard artist who's worked on superhero movies likeCaptain America: The First Avenger, ThorandIron Man. Andy Park is a professional concept illustrator who's worked on Thor: The Dark World(2013), Iron Man 3(2013) andMarvel's the The Avengers (2012). Charlie Wenhas worked on films like The Avengers (2012), Iron Man 3 (2013) and Thor (2011).

Here are some things you may not have noticed

Click on the images to enlarge.

1) Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) has chest hair. Normally he's "man-scaped."

2) Vision. Paul Bettany has said that they're motion-capturing his face, so expect that too.

3) Not surprisingly, Hawkeye's (Jeremy Renner) arrows do nothing. We see a lot sticking out of the robots, but none seem to do anything.

4) Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) has her shock bracelets, known as "Black Widow's Bite." We first saw them in concept art for the Avengers, but they didn't get much use before and didn't show the full glowing costume till now.

5) Captain America (Chris Evans) has ears. Although Cap's ears are exposed in the comics, up until now his ears have been covered in the movies.

6) Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) can melt the robots. It makes you wonder why the others are there.

7) Quicksilver (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) is insanely fast. It's like he's fighting ten bots at once. You don't even notice how fast he is until you realize he's running all through the poster.

8) Thor's (Chris Hemsworth) hammer looks less stylized than the previous ones. Set pics show the traditional hammer, but why is the poster different? Where are the Nordic symbols? Is it a different hammer?

9. Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) is sporting his new Mark XLIII (43) armor. It looks pretty much the same as the XLII armor except it's red and gold instead of gold and red.

Here's the final poster:

Charlie Wen 's blog is http://charliewen.typepad.com, Andy Park's portfolio is at http://www.andyparkart.com and Ryan Meinerding's site (currently down) is boyrobot.com.

Spider-Man 2 (2004) concept art by James Carson
Check out Spider-Man 2 concept art and storyboards by James Carson!

After finishing Spider-Man Sam Raimi had some thoughts on how to do a sequel. Originally one of the supporting characters was Felicia Hardy (aka the Black Cat) to create a romantic triangle with Mary Jane. Cast notes showed Brooke Adams was cast, and possibly shot some scenes, but Black Cat was cut from the film to focus on Doctor Octopus. Recently, we saw what Doctor Octopus might look like in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 but, back in 2004, Sam Raimi brought the classic Spider-Man villain to the screen with Alfred Molina. One of the artists that helped Raimi visualize the character was James Carson, and he shared some concept art on his site along with some storyboards from the film.

Carson is a professional concept and storyboard artist who's worked on major Hollywood movies like Captain America: The Winter Soldier(2014), Spider-Man(2002)and X-Men: First Class (2011).

Battlestar Galactica (2002) concept art by  Guy Hendrix Dyas

Check out Battlestar Galactica concept art by  Guy Hendrix Dyas!

Every Friday I feature artwork from a classic of science fiction cinema. This week's "Flashback Friday" post is on the unmade Battlestar Galactica (2001) movie.

This week's post was requested by Jim Chlubnawho asked for "Battlestar Galactica, Tom DeSanto/ Bryan Singer" concept art.

Back in 2000, Bryan Singer set out to remake the classic 70's sci-fi show Battlestar Galacticafor Fox as a mini-series. Singer was very passionate about the show and he brought on Guy Hendrix Dyas, who eventually worked with him on X2, to work on the pilot. The concept was that it would continue the storyline of the first series but set it 25 years later featuring some of the original cast.

Guy Hendrix Dyas is a professional production designer who's worked on Hollywood movies like X2 (2012) Inception (2010) and Superman Returns (2006).

Read on to find out why was the project shut down and what it would have been like.

Click on the images to enlarge.

"I was introduced to Bryan by producers, Tom DeSanto and David Gorder and I ended up drawing pretty much the entire ‘look’ for the show," Dyas told Junsui Films, "Like me, Bryan is a strong believer in respecting what has gone before and I think it was that aspect of my designs which impressed and pleased him most."

The project was green-lit in April 2001 and the show was developing nicely. They began building sets and costumes when the World Trade Center attack happened on September 11th. Production delays led to Bryan Singer leaving the project to work on X2.The studio decided the concept was "too close to home" and the production was shut down. Screenwriter Ronald D. Moore and producer David Eick developed a remake (or "reimagining") of the show for the Sc-Fi channel. It was a hit though they still used some of Dyas' original designs including a "half built Viper plane."

Universal is developing a movie that would be set between the original series and the remake, but without Bryan Singer.

When going back to Asgard the production designers went back to Norway to create the look of the digital coasts of the home of Thor. "I’m a big fan of even if you have to do everything in CG it’s always great to have something to build on," visual effects supervisor Jake Morrison told FXGuide. "So we had a fantastic locations manager, Emma Pill, who found this chain of islands called Lofoten in Norway – 120 miles into the Arctic Circle. It’s well tucked away and takes three planes to get up there! But it’s this amazing little Norwegian miniature – it’s got all of the fjords and the beautiful landscapes, greenery and rocky precipices, but it’s actually shootable. You can fly a helicopter to one bit from another fairly easily." Double Negative visual effects supervisor Alex Wuttke added, "The benefit of that is that you have some real world terrain to work with – so you have buildings that have to convey natural features. Then from there we went in there populating the terrain with different buildings."

It created some stunning visuals including the funeral scene and the battles in the training room. One of the artists that helped bring that real world feel to Asgard was Kev Jenkins.

Jenkins is a professional concept artist, matte painter and art director who's worked on big budget movies like Edge of Tomorrow (2014), Superman Returns (2006) and Clash of the Titans (2010),

While talking about the development of Guardians of the Galaxy, director James Gunn told IGN, "Our sets are enormous. We have a prison that is 350,000 pounds of steel. The film Lucy had a massive budget at an estimated 49 million euro (or $65,759,189). EuropaCorp CEO Christophe Lambert told JeuxActu it has, "the highest budget in the history of EuropaCorp… Luc Besson has never put so many special effects in a movie." When you have that many special effects it takes a ton of concept art and one of the talented artists working on the film was Ben Mauro. He recently shared some concept art on his site.

Mauro is a professional concept artist who's worked on Hollywood films like Man of Steel (2014),Elysium(2013) and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014).

 How Lucy sees the world

"Had the huge pleasure and honor to work with Luc Besson again on his recent film LUCY, helping him visualize a lot of the more cerebral portions of his script. Was fun to work with him early on to develop and visualize the future computers seen at the end and visualize some other really out there ideas. One of the first big projects to come out finally working as an independent directly with the client/director, was fun to go on set, see our names in the credits as ourselves and be able to post our work with no hassle...... amazing. Enjoy!

"Future computers, various explorations working with Luc to visualize what he wanted the future computers to look like, he had a pretty specific idea for what they should look like, the finals sort of ended up being a mix of both of these."

Check out my interview with Avengers: Age of Ultron concept artist Andy Park!

A while back I featured the massive San Diego Comic Con 2014 poster for Avengers: Age of Ultron. One of the talented artists that worked on the poster - and also the 2012 Avengers Comic Con poster - kindly agreed to a brief interview about working on it.

Andy Park is a professional concept artist who's worked on big budget projects like Thor: The Dark World(2013), Iron Man 3(2013) andMarvel's the The Avengers (2012)

Click on the images to enlarge.
Here's what he had to say about his work on the Avengers 2 poster:

"The 8 Marvel Studios Avengers: The Age of Ultron poster set done for San Diego Comic Con 2014 was done by myself, Ryan Meinerding, and Charlie Wen." Park said, "Ryan initially came up with the overall look and layout of the piece. It was then divided up for each of us to paint up. I illustrated the Black Widow and Scarlet Witch posters, Charlie did the Hulk and Thor posters, and Ryan did the remaining 4. This was a sort of reunion piece for us as we also did the 7 poster set for Comic Con back in 2011 for The Avengers film. Doing these posters are definitely career highlights for me not only because of the high profile nature of the projects they’re done for, but also because of the collaboration I get to have with two of the artists that I respect the most.

"It’s a tremendous honor to be a part of Marvel Studios’ Visual Development Department. I’ve been a part of the team since 2010 working on all the Marvel Studios films since Captain America: The First Avengers. So far I’ve designed characters and keyframes for Cap 1, Thor, The Avengers, Iron Man 3, Thor: The Dark World, Guardians of the Galaxy, Ant-Man, and Avengers: Age of Ultron. Before that I was one of the leading concept artists at Sony Santa Monica designing the characters, creatures, and overall look for the God of War franchise. And before that, I was a comic book artist for about a decade working on such comic book titles as Tomb Raider, Weapon X, Excalibur, and Uncanny X-Men.

"It’s definitely an exciting time here at Marvel Studios and I can’t wait to see what’s next.

"Feel free to follow me (& my work) at:

Back when Michael Bay made Transformers he featured to versions of the Chevy Camaro for Bumblebee: the 1977 second-generation Camaro and a fifth-generation concept Camaro. For the new Transformers movie Bay wanted a more "aggressive and muscular" look. The new movie again features two Bublebee cars: a heavily modified vintage 1967 Camaro SS and a futuristic concept Camaro. One of the artists that helped shape that new Bublebee was Warren Maser, who shared some of his designs on his Facebook page.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014) concept art by Justin Fields
Check out my interview with Dawn of the Planet of the Apes concept artist Justin Fields!

Twentieth Century Fox has announced that Dawn of the Planet of the Apes will hit Blu-Ray on December 9th with extended features and it promises to be the biggest release of December. The film is breaking records left and right and that's in large part due to the stunning visuals. I did a brief email interview with one of the talented concept illustrators on the film named Justin Fields.

Justin "Goby" Fields is a professional concept artist who's worked on Hollywood movies like Iron Man 3 (2013), The Wolverine (2013) and Noah (2014).

Read on to find out how an Amazon tribe inspired the film, what Ceasar almost looked like and his incredible new studio IronKlad Studios!

Click on the images to enlarge.

Maurice Mitchell: What did you spend most of your time on in this project?
Justin Goby Fields: Most of my time was spent on developing Blue Eyes, Cornelia (Caesar's Wife), Koba's crew and a little bit of time on Caesar. Our early designs were very apocalyptic. But, when the script changed, we ended up going very tribal.

MM: Director James Chinlund said they spent a lot of time studying primate culture. What's the most surprising way this influenced your designs? If at all?
JF: We looked at alot of reference and really settled on some Amazon tribes as our goal. The director really responded well to the overall look and feel of the tribes that were very far removed from modern influences. I found a lot of it very facinating and quickly found myself watching a lot of documentaries on the subject.

MM: You also worked on the previous film Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. What most impressed you about the designs in the last film?
JF: I was most impressed by the quality and the realism. Weta continues to amaze me with their artistry in bringing characters to life. Seeing Jerad Marantz's Koba make it to the screen and with every inch of detail there was amazing.

MM: I've talked to Jerad about that, and he's amazed by it as well! What was it like working with Chinlund?
JF: Always an amazing time. Can't wait for the next one! ;)

MM: So, what's coming up next for you?
Well, since working on this film, I have branched out and started my own studio called IronKlad Studios here in Hollywood. We specialize in Character, Creature Designs, as well as Matte Painting, Story-boarding, IP creation, Commercials and Motion Graphics. In house, we are currently working on bringing three of our own projects to the silver screen. We can't wait to show more, but for now those have to be hush hush. =D

Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) concept art by Jackson Sze
Check out Guardians of the Galaxy concept art by Jackson Sze!

The artbook Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy: The Art of the Movie is an Amazon bestseller now and that's because the movie rocks and the visuals are like nothing you've ever seen before. One of the concept artists that worked on the movie was kind enough to do an exclusive interview with me and shared some secerets about making the film like how Benicio Del Toro's casting changed the look of "The Collector" and how this movie uses color unlike any other Marvel film.

Jackson Sze is a professional concept artist who's worked on big budget Hollywood films like The Avengers (2012), Thor: The Dark World (2013) and Jack the Giant Slayer (2013).

Maurice Mitchell: So, what did you spend more time working on for Guardians of the Galaxythan anything else?
Jackson Sze: I spent a lot of time on the Collector. There was a round of design work done before Benicio Del Toro was cast.

After the casting we did update the design to work better with the actor. Giving him more to play with in terms of hair, makeup and a cape.

MM: It's a truly amazing costume. What were the inspiration for the Collector's eclectic look?
JS: I always look towards what was done in the comics as a starting point when designing these characters for film, and the Collector was no different. The white hair, the dramatic cape, and the sense of power were important to this established character.

When I found out that Benicio Del Toro was cast, and that he wanted to play up the theatricality of the character, I redid the design from scratch. The fur cape and rich fabrics hopefully helped Benicio Del Toro turned the Collector into a memorable character.

MM: James Gunn said that he wanted the movie to have a bright colorful look. Was there ever a sense of how different the color scheme would be over other Marvel films?
JS: Because most of the movie is set in exotic space locations, we were able to push our work into the more colorful realm than say The Avengers, which was very much earth based. Neon lights, strange Cosmic clouds, and Sci Fi effects afforded us the opportunity to really stage our characters in a colorful world.

MM: Was there any specific instruction that Gunn gave the design team?
JS: When James came on board to direct, he had a very clear vision of the tone and color of the film. We were told to go bold with colors, and ground our design work with realistic textures. Throughout the design process, we paid close attention to what James responded to in terms of our art. It wasn't long before our team understood where James wanted to go, and did our best to help him makeGuardians of the Galaxy as cool as possible.
Korath by Jackson Sze

Korath by Jackson Sze

MM: What was the design you're most proud of?
JS: This is going to be a slightly more abstract answer. I am proud to have contributed to the world building of this property. In terms of keyframes, I tried to push the color, lighting, and textures to create an eclectic and fun Sci Fi world people would want to see. Hopefully, taken as a whole, the design work I contributed help strengthen the tone and mood of the film.

MM: You've worked on four Marvel Movies so far. How did you approach working on this film versus the others?
JS: Guardians of the Galaxy was tremendously fun to work on. We were given a chance to build a whole new Sci Fi galaxy. With the Avengers and their individual films, the tone and look is already pretty much set. There are some space and alien precedence set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in terms of Thor and the Chitauri. With that in mind, we explored how fantastical the farther reaches of the galaxy can be. So, in terms of designing GOTG, we did feel like we were navigating through uncharted Marvel territory. Thankfully James Gunn our director had a very clear vision on what he wanted the look and feel to be, and that really helped guide our work.

MM: On another note, you shared a really fun drawing you did for a Starbucks on your Facebook page. How did you end up doing the Starbucks drawing?
JS: We have a Starbucks on the first floor of our building at work. The Baristas knew some of us work at Marvel, and asked if we wanted to draw something on their chalkboard. Previously, the Disney Animation team drew a really fun Elsa from Frozen. I thought it would be great to showcase Groot and Rocket at Starbucks. Anything to help elevate people's awareness of Guardians of the Galaxy!

I have not drawn on a chalkboard since Grade school. There's this liquid chalk medium I didn't know existed. So, that was fun and challenging to use. Hopefully next year we can do something for Avengers: Age of Ultron as well!

MM: Which brings me to my next question: what's next for you?
JS: I am working on Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015) and Ant-Man (2015). Those are proving to be as fun and challenging as any other Marvel Studios film I've been lucky enough to work on! I can't wait to see how they all turn out!
