2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY Concept Art by Harry Lange

Check out 2001: A Space Odysseyconcept art by Harry Lange!

Every Friday I feature artwork from a classic of science fiction film. This week's "Flashback Friday" post is on 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968).

2001: A Space Odyssey is a masterpiece of science fiction cinema and one of director Stanley Kubrick's greatest works.

Harry Lange - along with Anthony Masters and Ernest Archer - was nominated for the Academy Award for "Best Art Direction" and won a BAFTA thanks to this film.

Hans "Harry" Kurt Lange, who sadly passed away in 2008, was a professional illustrator, film production designer and art director. He worked on many classics of science fiction including on all three of the Star Wars films, Superman II (1980) and The Dark Crystal (1982).

These images are from his site www.harry-lange.org.uk which is run by his son John. These illustrations were also shown in the Museum of Oxford's2001 exhibition.

Check out the rest of the pictures after the jump (click to enlarge).

Lange, who was a former NASA illustrator, told BBC what it was like to work with Kubrick on the film.

"I was virtually the first person, and the last person, to work on the project with Stanley Kubrick. I got along with him very well. He was an absolute stickler for detail and a good taskmaster. That was fine with me, because I was new to filmmaking.

"I met Stanley through Arthur C Clarke - a friend from my NASA days - who told me he was collaborating with Kubrick on filming one of his stories.

"Late that night, I got a phone call from Stanley, saying he'd like to meet me the next morning at his penthouse overlooking Central Park.

"He looked at my artwork and said: 'I can get better illustrators in New York for a dime a dozen - but they don't have your ability plus your scientific background. Would you be interested in designing the ships for this film?'

"These had to be designed as if they could travel to the edge of the Solar System and beyond."

See How SPIDER-MAN 3 Changed in Concept Art by Phil Saunders

Check out Spider-Man 3 concept art by Phil Saunders!

The life of a concept artist can be a dream come true designing artwork for hit films that thrill audiences.

Unfortunately, like any job, it can be difficult because of the environment on the job. One film like that was Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 3 (2007) for artist Phil Saunders.

Saunders is a professional concept artist who's worked on blockbuster films like Iron Man 3 (2013) Avengers and TRON Legacy.

See what he had to say about working on the film and check out the rest of the images after the jump (click to enlarge).

Saunders joined the project after the production designer changed from Neil Spisak to Mike Riva a few weeks into principle photography.

He said, "I've never been on a movie where the script changed so radically so often. I wouldn't be half-way through a keyframe when someone would look over my shoulder and say 'Oh. Didn't you know? It's no longer Venom in that scene, it's Goblin...' This is why we paint in layers...

"It was also pretty political with the change-over in art department. Jim Carson and I kept getting asked to do pretty much the same work, which was really demoralizing, particularly for him since he'd been on the project for over a year already doing great work. I felt really bad, it just wasn't a fun environment. The construction site set ended up being struck and rebuilt twice more for re-shoots. Ahh, this is how movies are made these days. And we wonder why they're so expensive..."

Trapped in Black Spider-Man's Web

"Spidey swinging to the rescue, back when it was Gwen Stacey in her sports car, not MJ in a taxi." - Saunders

New Goblin Coming Out of the Shadows

"I can't even remember which way this went in the final film. I think it was venom coming out of the shadows and not goblin, but I can't be sure, since I painted it both ways." - Saunders

Legendary Films Interview with PACIFIC RIM Concept Artist Guy Davis

Check out Pacific Rimconcept art by Guy Davis!

I hosted an interview with Guy Davis on Pacific Rim before, but Legendary Films posted an amazing interview with him along with more early Kaiju concept art.

Guy Davis is a professional concept and storyboard artist who's worked on quirky projects like The Amazing Screw-On Head (2006)the upcoming Pinocchio film by Guillermo del Toro.

Check out the rest of the images after the jump (click to enlarge).

The whole interview is great, but here are some highlights.

On coming up with designs:
"...On Otachi I started with a series of quick sketches for different possible kaiju, the design Guillermo picked I worked up more with his input. Working up how she’d look with her wings out, head details and what not. Once we got that design down, Francisco Ruiz Velasco did a full concept painting fleshing out some other details like adding Meathead’s tail and from there David Meng sculpted the maquette to bring it to the final form." - Davis

On the various "nicknames" for the Kaiju"

"When I arrived early on the production, Wayne Barlowe’s Knifehead was locked in and I started working on different ideas for other kaiju. Without knowing what they would be called in the script or the scenes they would be used in, I just started giving the ones I designed fun names to remember them by. Just a way of giving the kaiju a quick identity if we needed to reference it or find the design." - Davis

On working with del Toro:
"It's always an amazing time getting to work with Guillermo, he's very encouraging and open to new ideas but also knows exactly what he's looking for and being an artist himself is able to work with the concept visually to get the finished design in the direction he wants." - Davis

Make sure you head to Legedary.com to read the rest of this fascinating interview!

As a bonus, here are some screencaps of Davis' dynamic storyboards from one of the behind-the-scenes featurettes on the young Mako Tokyo scene.

Official PACIFIC RIM Synopsis
When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes-a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)-who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

Killer Ang Lee HULK Dog Concept Art by Sang Jun Lee and Kevin Nowlan

Check out Ang Lee'sHulkconcept art by Sang Jun Lee and Kevin Nowlan!

I was admiring the work of several excellent concept artists and noticed some common designs. While the Hulk is a major hit with The Avengers, it wasn't always that way. Back in 2003, Ang Lee created a Hulk film that even he said he took "too seriously." One bit of fun in the film were the so-called "Hulk Dogs" that were genetically engineering mutated attack dogs.

Here's an excellent summary of the scene by Jay Jayson (Nailbiter111) at ComicBookMovie.com in case you haven't seen it.
"In the film, David Banner calls his son Bruce, and tells him that he has sent his dogs, that have been genetically altered, after Betty (Jennifer Connelly). Bruce tries to alert Talbot (Josh Lucas) of his father's evil plans, but a confrontation ensues which forces Bruce to become the Hulk. He soon heads off to Betty's cabin in the woods. Betty comes across the Hulk hiding behind a large tree, and soon realizes that the big green monster is actually Bruce. As Betty drinks in this revelation, a sound alerts the Hulk to the arrival of the three Hulk-ified dogs."

Two of the artists that helped create those creatures were Sang Jun Lee and Kevin Nowlan. I just found some "killer" designs for those beasts and great explanations of the design process behind them.

Sang Jun Lee is a professional concept artist who's worked on blockbuster movies like Men in Black II (2002) and Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith. Kevin Nowlan is a comic book artist who's also worked on Hollywood films.

Check out the rest of the images after the jump (click to enlarge).
Here's what the "Hulk Dogs" looked like in the final film:

"My involved again was with pre-production on the Hulk. My main designs were the Hulk dogs. The director (Ang Lee) was looking for monstrous animals that came from a realistic scientific background. My research began with dog anatomy then spread to real footage of dogs fighting. Once I was confident in my research, I started to work on illustrations. When Ang Lee approved the final design a maquett was created and later scanned into the computer by ILM. Working on this project was a lot of fun, especially, the poodle hulk dog."- Lee

"More sketches for Ang Lee.  We watched his tape of Best of Show, looking for dogs that would make good monsters." - Nowlan

Awesome STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS Klingon Designs by Neville Page

Check out Star Trek Into Darkness Klingon designs by Neville Page!

When talking about the new design of the Klingons director J.J. Abrams said, "I thought the [new] design was incredibly cool. We have a designer, Neville Page, who came up with a great design and we feel like [it was] in the realm of what people knew... but a distinct difference. It also shows that this Star Trek was not trying to copy what was done nearly 50 years ago, but find its own rhythm, its own universe. It just felt like the right choice. "

Page is a professional concept artist who's worked on Hollywood movies like Cloverfield (2009), Avatar (2009) and Prometheus (2012)

He's updated his site nevillepage.com with concept art for the film and talked about the designs.

Find out more and check out the rest of the images after the jump (click to enlarge).

First, here's what the redesigned Klingons looked like in the film.

Here's what he said about the designs.

"J.J. Abrams was kind enough to have me on board another Star Trek. It was not too dissimilar to the first experience, other than I was too busy to be cast as an Alien this time. Then again, I did go down with the ship in the previous one.

"This first round of images are some of the development of the Klingons. This was a very important assignment for me because I knew how important it was to the fans of the franchise. It was a delicate balance of respecting the established looks from previous incarnations yet delivering something appropriate for JJ's film." - Neville Page

"Part of my self induced criteria was to do a cleaner version (especially regarding the forehead) and to make them sexy (or sexier if you already find them sexy!)" - Neville Page

Revealing ELYSIUM Concept Art by Ben Mauro

Check out Elysiumconcept art by Ben Mauro!

Elysium is a popular film, but it went through many revisions and script changes. One of the concept artists involved, Ben Mauro, has shared a ton of great concept art on his site that gives us insight into some of the changes Elysium went through.

Mauro is a professional concept artist who's worked on blockbuster movies like Man of Steel(2013)and  The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014).

Check out the rest of the images after the jump (click to enlarge).
Here's a sample of the illustrations on his site along with descriptions he gives there.

"Had the pleasure of working on this film for around 3 years (2009-2011) alongside my incredible co-workers Aaron Beck, Christian Pearce and Leri Greer. Was one of the first films I worked on right out of design school so it was a huge learning experience for me trying to keep up with guys who had just come off working on District 9 and AVATAR... intimidating to say the least! It has been a really incredible experience seeing this go from words on a page back in 2009, to the finished product nearly 4 years later. My co-workers really set the tone and feel for the world we created in the film,  I learned and grew heaps over that time, it was by far the best experience I have had working on a film to date!"

"Kruger was initially going to get killed and have his brain transplanted into this horrible killer robot that terrorized and murdered all the gangsters invading ELYSIUM. As with many things this all got cut and he just got fitted with a more advanced Exo-Skeleton to have an epic showdown with Max."

"Another one from 2010. The film was originally going to be done on a much smaller budget, so some of the early solutions for the droids in the movie needed to be done as humans with a simple prosthetic on their face. This started as a concept painting that was then approved and manufactured at Weta Workshop, but ultimately scrapped for the much cooler full CG robots seen in the final film kicking a** (though we also built heaps of practical versions of those for the actors to interact with as well) that Christian Pearce's ninja hands designed in a matter of seconds!"

"The head was manufactured at this point but the budget expanded to do full CG robot body and Neill liked this head design so I had to turn it into a fully robotic version and put it onto the current body which was designed by a combination of designers at the workshop, so just the head was designed by me, you can see the full body in the 'Art Of' book. In the end this design was ultimately scrapped, I think the only vague similarities that made it into the final bot would be the sort of canister mouth (final bot had a rad dual canister mouth)."

"Early image done to sell the studio and Matt Damon on what he would look like with the exo skeleton and tattoo, luckily it went over well! The Exo/tattoo designs and things were all from Aaron Beck on this, I had to illustrate what this would look like for the meeting."

"Earlier high tech version of Kruger"

"An earlier scene that was cut, Kruger was going to hunt down Max and drag him out of a prison....murdering everything in his path."

"This was an extra image I did for fun while working on the hunt scene, I thought it would be cool if max was in some advanced holding cell with a few other heavily modified gangsters, maybe some of them had some really invasive older versions of the exo technology."

"Early exploration for the Citizens of ELYSIUM and other high end robots and bodies. The idea was that they could style their skin with patterns and designs for fashion.....we did hundreds of these. Some skin modifications for the rich living on the tourus, thought it would be cool if they were so guadi that they started to put gold or other expensive metals into their appearance, literally wearing and displaying their wealth on them. Trying to echo powerful geometric forms to make it look ancient but powerful."

This is an extremely small sample, so see more of Ben Mauro's work on the film at artofben.com/ELYSIUM

STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS Concept Art for U.S.S. Vengeance Phaser and Unused Red Planet Props by John Eaves

Check out Star Trek Into Darknessconcept art by John Eaves!

I was actually planning to review the Star Trek Into Darkness Blu-Ray, but my digital copy code from BestBuy isn't working (Thanks Best Buy!).

So, while they try and figure that out, I decided to share some concept art for the film from one of my favorite designers: John Eaves.

Eaves is a professional designer and illustrator who's worked on many Star Trekfranchise products like Star Trek: First Contact (1996)andbig-budget films like Terminator 2: Judgment Day(1991) and G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra (2009).

In an article on Startrek.com he talks about working on the film and shared some of his designs. I'm not going to share the whole article (which is awesome) but I will share some highlights.

Check out the highlights and the rest of the images after the jump (click to enlarge).

He talks a lot about workin gon the film with other great designers like Ryan Church, James Clyne, Kevin Cross and Chris S. Ross as well as others. Eaves also talks about the secrecy while working on the film saying they never got the script. They were given coded descriptions and character names and had to "work hard to pull out any details to make the drawings work."

Eaves says, "For example, I was working on some props for a character named April. Later, when the film opened, we found out that April was… Khan. It was funny working on a film and not knowing much more than what was immediately important to what you were specifically designing. So, with that said I was off to research dart guns and a host of other primitive weapons and give them a bit of a Star Trek twist."

In another part of the article he talks about designing props for the film. "Almost as soon as I started to put pencil to paper I was asked to start working on the new Dark Enterprise hand phaser." Eaves recalled, "The early designs were based on a handyman’s all-in-one pocket tool that had inspired Scott's imagination.

"Most of the time there is more work generated that gets shelved than what finally makes it to the screen. That's what I love most about being in an art department, getting the chance to see all the work that paves the road to the final film. So, without any more babble, here are some of the designs for the alien props and the first pass of the Dark Enterprise hand phaser." - Eaves

Dr. Seuss Inspired E.T. THE EXTRA-TERRESTRIAL Concept Art by Ralph McQuarrie

Check out E.T. the Extra-Terrestrialconcept art by Ralph McQuarrie!

Every Friday I feature artwork from a classic of science fiction cinema. This week's "Flashback Friday" post is on E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial(1982).

The late artist Ralph McQuarrie worked on dozens of classic films, but there's one film that he only worked on briefly. His only lasting contribution to E.T. is the mothership, but it's brilliant.

McQuarrie was a professional illustrator who worked on Hollywood films like Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica and

Check out the rest of the images after the jump (click to enlarge).

McQuarrie said on his site RalphMcQuarrie.com(now DreamsandVisionsPress.com), "Steven (Spielberg) had a requirement for a space ship for E.T. He was at ILM one day and I talked with him for about five minutes - he said he would like to have ET’s space ship to look like Dr. Suess designed it. I thought that was kind of interesting, very off the wall.

"I made about five or six sketches of space ships for it. He looked at them and picked one out and I made a painting of it. They built the model at ILM and looked almost exactly like the painting with all the features and the retractable lights, it was amazing. They did a beautiful job.

"I suggested that it take off with a sort blue flame as it lifted into the evening sky, that it be very quiet, then a sound of a jet in the distance would come in as it disappeared. They did all that I think."

Here's what it looks like in the final film.

He also did some designs for the alien which I can't find anywhere.

Here's what he said about them. McQuarrie said, "Steven asked me to do some concepts of E.T. Carlo Rambaldihad sculpted what was really E.T., but Steven was tweaking little wrinkles. He had me making sketches of E.T.’s, and I made a whole lot of off the wall E.T.'s, but Rabaldi’s version stood out. Steven just wanted to get another opinion so to say, which I gave."

Official E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial Synopsis
Steven Spielberg's 1982 hit about a stranded alien and his loving relationship with a fatherless boy (Henry Thomas) struck a chord with audiences everywhere, and it furthered Spielberg's reputation as a director of equally strong commercial sensibilities and classical leanings. Henry Thomas gives a strong, emotional performance as E.T.'s young friend, Robert MacNaughton and Drew Barrymore make a solid impression as his siblings, and Dee Wallace is lively as the kids' mother. The special effects almost look a bit quaint now with all the computer advancements that have occurred since, but they also have more heart behind them than a lot of what we see today.

Production Design by James D. Bissell
Starring Dee Wallace, Peter Coyote, Henry Thomas, Drew Barrymore

EXCLUSIVE: THE WOLVERINE Storyboards and Interview with John Coven

Check out The Wolverinestoryboards by John Coven!

The Wolverine (2013) is a massive hit and recently actor Hugh Jackman said it might be his last solo film as Logan.

While promoting his latest film, PrisonersJackman told MTV News' Josh Horowitz, "It may be the last. By the way, it didn't hit me until three weeks before the end [of shooting 'X-Men: Days of Future Past], because we promoted 'The Wolverine' and I came back on set with three weeks to go, and that's when I went, 'Well, who knows? Maybe there's no more Wolverine. Maybe this is it. Who knows? Maybe.' So I really made the most of those last few weeks. I enjoyed every time I put the claws on."

If so, then he went out with a bang. I interviewed two of the storyboard artists that helped director Jim Mangold visualize the film and am sharing them in two parts this week. The first artist is John Coven.

Coven is a professional storyboard artist who's worked on big budget movies like The Usual Suspects (1995), X-Men (2000) and The Green Hornet (2011).

Check out the interview and the rest of the boards after the jump (click to enlarge).

Maurice Mitchell: Thanks for this interview John. What did you spend your time working on in The Wolverine?
John Coven: I worked on a bunch of scenes for the film over the course of well over a year.

They include the POW camp opening, Logan and the bear, the big fight at the temple during Yashida's funeral, Logan's fight with the ninjas at the ice village, and, of course, Logan's fight with the Silver Samurai.  I even storyboarded the last scene in Japan at the airport.

MM: Early reports told of "a stunt fight sequence between the Wolverine and Japanese samurai on motorbikes" that never made the film. What can you tell us about that scene?
JC:  The ninja motorbike fight was a collaboration with Dave Leitch, our second unit director/stunt coordinator.  He was rehearsing with the stunt riders in the parking lot of Fox Studios Australia where we were shooting.  He'd tape the rehearsals and I'd watch the tapes.  Then I'd draw up additional ideas and propose them to Dave and Jim Mangold, our director.

The bike fight was in the cut right up until just before the film's release.  It was cut from the movie at the last minute.  I hear it's going to be included in the DVD version.

MM: Several storyboards were leaked on line before the film opened. Did you design them and could you walk us through the layouts?
JC: The storyboards in the photos on comicbooksyndicate.com are a mashup of boards by me, Todd Harris, and David Russell.  What you see pasted up on the board is an editing of screen captures from Dave Leitch's stunt vis, and boards from the various storyboard artists done at various times during preproduction and filming.

MM: What was it like working on the film?
JC: Storyboarding the scenes was a pleasure.  The hardest thing about the film was that in the fall of 2011 we lost Huge Jackman to Les Miserables.  The production shut down and the whole art department was let go with the exception of our production designer, Francois Audouy, and me.  For two or three months Francois and I were the entire crew.  We continued working out scenes with our director and waited to see what would happen next.

It was very strange keeping the show alive in a kind of vacuum.  In December 2011 more artists were hired back for a big presentation to the Fox executives.

After Christmas we were all let go and then finally in May 2012, when it had been decided we would shoot in Australia, preproduction started once again and we never looked back.

MM: That sounds like a lot to go through, but the final product was worth it. Is there any funny memories you have from working all that time?
JC: If not the funniest, probably the most memorable thing that happened to me on the film was when, early in preproduction, we had a visitor to the art department.  Jim Mangold was giving a tour to what I assumed was some producer or other.  He got around to me and I stopped drawing, spun around in my chair and took the proffered hand as I stood up.

Of course, I looked up to discover it was Hugh Jackman.  I must have frozen like a statue because the next thing I knew he was yanking his hand out of mine.

Almost exactly a year later we found ourselves standing together on the POW camp set.  I reintroduced myself and it all went better the second time around.  As anyone who's worked with him will tell you, he's a great person.

MM: Everyone says Hugh Jackman is the nicest guy, so it must be true. Where will we see your work next?
JC: After The Wolverine I storyboarded Godzilla, The Muppets Most Wanted, and Dracula.  I also worked on Jurassic Park IV which, unfortunately, got put on hold.  It was a great team and I'm still hoping, as happened with The Wolverine, that we'll be reassembled and make it.

Thanks John! I can't wait to see your work on Godzilla.

Check out The Wolverinestoryboards by Daniel James Cox!

Update: Daniel sent me some more storyboards for the Shingen Death scene!

This is the second The Wolverine storyboard interview that I did. Monday, I shared my interview with Wolverine storyboard artist James Coven. Today I'm letting you hear my conversation with Daniel J. Cox.

It was Daniel that suggested these interviews when I contacted him about his Fantastic Four designs. They planned a panel at Comic-Con, but couldn't get the studio's approval in time.

Cox is a professional storyboard artist, who's worked on Hollywood films like The Great Gatsby (2013), Fantastic 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer (2007) and Knowing (2009).

He gives a great interview and shares some storyboards for scenes that never made it into the film.
Check out the rest of the images after the jump (click to enlarge).

Maurice Mitchell: Thanks for this interview Daniel! When did you start storyboarding for Wolverine?
Daniel J. Cox: I came on the show much, much later than John. Though when I started at Fox Studios Australia, I thought I was the only board artist working on the picture. It was only after a week or so that I was told John was flying in from LA, which was great as it's always nice to have a colleague that you can bounce ideas off. We were setup in the production office…right near Jim [director James Mangold] and the producers, so they could keep an eye on us (LOL).

I worked on three main sequences: the ninja ice bike fight (which was cut from the film), the lab fight between Yukio and Shingen, and the end sequence of the climatic fight between Logan and Shingen. I also did a few other bits and pieces for gags that David wanted to pitch.

MM: John Coven talked a little bit about a fight between Ninjas on motorcycles. Can you tell us more about that?
DC: My first assignment was this sequence! As John said, David Leitch had ideas that he wanted to pitch to Jim and the studio. Dave took me through his ideas, using miniature bikes to explain the moves, and what he wanted to see.

He had bikes doing hand brakes and smashing into Logan, doing vertical 360 flips, shooting him with net guns -- all sorts of really cool (but crazy!) stuff. So on my first day I was introduced to David and Jim, and then stood around a table, while they play acted out the scene using toy bikes LOL. He would show me a couple times, then I'd go off and draw them. Great fun!

Ninja Bike Fight

MM: John talked about some leaked Wolverine storyboards from the film. Were you familiar with those boards?
DC: As John said, that was stuff which was produced earlier in the production, when they were based in LA. That was a pretty funny day though because Francois, the production designer, had left those up after a presentation to members of Australian government, and by that night, they had leaked onto the web.

The next day, Jim came stomping in and was like "where's Francois? Is he busy uploading s**t to the Internet?" That was really funny, though everyone knew it was just an accident. Or was it? LOL

MM: Was there a particular storyboard scene you found the most challenging? How did you overcome it?
DC: Really, all the sequences are challenging. Drawing motorbikes is always challenging, and I like to give my boards movement and energy, and sometimes that's hard when you are focused on the shot design. John has much more experience than I do, since he lives in LA and is able to make a living just from storyboarding. While I live and work just in Sydney (and sometimes fly across the ditch to New Zealand for gigs), so I also do production illustration and visual effects art direction. But I learned a lot on this job working with John, David and Jim, so that was invaluable. And of course, every job you do, you get better and better. It's really just about practicing your craft as much as you can! And as they say, if it was easy…everyone would be doing it!

MM: It's a challenging job alright. Are there any funny or interesting memories you have from working on the film?
DC: Sure…couple funny stories come to mind --

First, Jim's awesome…he's a big, solid guy and he walks around in these big boots, and has this booming voice. You know when he's in the room. And he's hysterically funny, and is always making jokes. For instance, Jim was reviewing our boards and John was showing him a sequence that was supposed to take place in Tokyo, but was being filmed in the small Chinese Gardens in Darling Harbour, Sydney. So after seeing about three panels, Jim was like "borrrrrrringggggg". John tried to explain that he was just using the set reference he'd been supplied, and Jim was like "But it's gonna look like Matlock". For those that don't know, Matlock is a tv courtroom drama that ran on NBC in the late 80's, so the exterior shots were mostly stock footage or just lit really badly. It was just Jim's way of saying he wanted the production quality to be really cinematic. But yeah, that cracked me up.

The other story I'll share was actually really cool and I felt I was able to make a good contribution to the film. You see, the earlier drafts of the script had Logan stabbing Shingen in his chest during the climatic fight. Now, I'm a big fan of comics…been reading them all my life. And of course, I had my copy of the Claremont/Miller miniseries with me the whole time.

Anyway, John and I were chatting and I was adamant that, as a fan boy, the one thing that has to stay is how Logan draws in Shingen with his claws retracted, grabs him…then pops his claws into Shingen's neck. That to me, was one of the best scenes ever drawn in comics, and also really showed Logan's character. It had to be in the movie. So just as I'm explaining this, John goes "well, here's you chance to tell Jim". I turn around, and there's Jim, marching towards us -- "Tell me what?" he booms. I was like, "oh s**t". Gulp. So I explained it to him, and Jim said "We can't do that. I think it's a rating issue". Then he quickly disappeared…and I thought that was that.

Then two seconds later he's back with the Fox executive, and Jim tells me to explain it to him. Which I did. Then Jim thought of a way that we could do it without showing the claws entering Shingen's neck, and acted it out for the Fox executive. It was great, and then Jim asked "what's that rated"? And John and I looked at each other and I blurted out "that's rated A for awesome". And we all had a big laugh, and Jim instructed me to board it. Which was great, and I even added an explicit shot of Logan's claws going into Shingen's neck, which was specifically for the unrated DVD version. Still haven't seen that version yet, so will be very interested to see if it made it in. But yeah, that was a fun time!

Shingen Death

Lab fight (Yukio vs. Shingen)

MM: Hopefully we get some awesome deleted scenes on the blu-ray. Where can we see your work next?
DC: I've been doing bits and pieces since finishing The Wolverine. I did some concepts for Greg Mclean's upcoming Wolf Creek 2, which was a lot of fun. Readers -- make sure you go see that…fabulous Aussie outback horror story. But mostly I've been focusing on getting my own animated series up, and a live action horror anthology which I'm getting traction on.

Oh, and I'm waiting on the green light to start on Alex Proya's Gods Of Egypt, which has had a few false starts. Hopefully it'll drop soon! That will be fabulous if it gets up!

In the end, due to time and budget, the shot was cut and in its place was a pretty simple motion-blurred shot of young Bruce playing violently with the dolls." - Tang

Every Friday, I feature artwork from a classic of science fiction cinema. This week's "Flashback Friday" post is on Stargate (1994)

Director Roland Emmerich is planning to reboot Stargate as a trilogy, so here's a look back at the concept art for the original film.

Two of the artists working on the film are Patrick Tatopoulus (Super Mario Bros, Riddick) and Peter Rubin (Man of Steel,
Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome)

Patrick Tatopoulus
In an interview for VFXHQ he talked about designing for the film Stargate:
"When I showed [director Roland Emmerich] my designs from DRACULA," Tatopoulos recalled, "Roland asked me to help design sets and the warrior characters for STARGATE. Over a three-day period, I created one sketch per character, each in one day, and he approved all of my designs on the spot. Roland and I understand each other; we are in the same realm of imagination."

Tatopoulos used Egyptian themes "with a Japanese samurai influence" for the design concepts but said he used his own originality for the characters. "Basically, I open books every day of my life, but when I need to design something, I close all the books," Tatopoulus' explained. "If I have 20 books open in front of me for references, I get lost."

After working on the character and creature designs "Roland asked if I could then build the creatures, which became my first experience setting up my own shop," he reflected. "I found a large space in North Hollywood that I shared with Greg Jein who was creating the models. 45 people worked in the shop with me coordinating the creatures, including Russell Shenkle, the mechanical shop head. He became my right hand on the show and really made things happen."

Check out Cloverfieldconcept art/storyboards by Josh Sheppard!

The Cloverfield trailer took in world by storm when it premiered before screenings of Transformers back in 2008. The image of the Statue of Liberty's head rolling into the streets of New York sent fans into a frenzy trying to figure out the meaning of the film's working title: 1-18-08.

One of the artists that helped visualize that striking scene is Josh Sheppard and he shared a sample of his storyboards on his site thestoryboardartist.com.

Joshua Sheppard is a professional concept and storyboard artist based in L.A. who's worked on blockbuster movies like Lincoln (2012), Jack the Giant Slayer (2013)and the upcoming Thor: The Dark World (2013).

Check out the rest of the images after the jump (click to enlarge).

Here's what he says about the boards at his site. Sheppard said, "This was NUTS! It went from loose development, straight into production and filming of this trailer, THEN we started pre-production on the film!

"The producer [J. J. Abrams] and I worked on several iterations of this, trying to find the right tone, based on his verbal pitch to me. It had to feel absolutely real, which is why he hired an actor’s director [Matt Reeves], rather than someone who specializes in action.

"The shooting style was a major challenge, because we couldn't just cut to another angle for shooting convenience. The tight deadline, various locations and sets, VFX, and top secret script made this thing really hard to hammer into shape. We had a skeleton crew, but everyone was excellent."

Here's the final trailer:

Fantastic 4: Rise of the Silver Surferconcept art by Daniel James Cox
Check out Fantastic 4: Rise of the Silver SurferGalactus concept art by Daniel James Cox!

I ran into some amazing concept art a while back that pointed to a very different interpretation of  Galactus"Devourer of Worlds" by Daniel J. Cox. In Fantastic 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer Galactus is a gigantic cloud, but Daniel was kind enough to dig up some renderings of Galactus that show his human form from the comics.

Cox is a professional concept and storyboard artist who's worked on big budget movies like The Wolverine (2013) The Great Gatsby (2013) and Knowing (2009).

Galactus first appeared in Fantastic Four #48–50 (March–May 1966) - which fans call "The Galactus Trilogy" - and he was designed by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby.

"Galactus was simply another in a long line of super-villains whom we loved creating," Lee said, "Having dreamed up [many] powerful baddies ... we felt the only way to top ourselves was to come up with an evil-doer who had almost godlike powers. Therefore, the natural choice was sort of demi-god, but now what would we do with him. We didn't want to use the tired old cliche about him wanting to conquer the world. ... That was when inspiration struck. Why not have him not be a really evil person? After all, a demi-god would be beyond mere good and evil. ... [What] he'd require is the life force and energy from living planets!"

In the film, all we see is a massive cloud, but it turns out there's a guy in there. The concept artists were told to create something intentionally vague. Vfx supervisor Eric Saindon told Animation World Network, "They wanted something that was a bit discrete and wasn't a big focus for the movie."

Fantastic Four 2 director Tim Story said they were planning to show him in future Fantastic Four films. Back in 2007, writer J. Michael Straczynski told IGN the Silver Surfer spin-off movie he was writing was going to show Galactus. "You don't want to sort of blow out something that big and massive for one quick shot in the first movie." Straczynski  said, "Where you're showing the origin of the Surfer, that's where you do it; that's where you blow it out."

We got glimpses of him thanks to Saindon. "We do the helmet in there some, you see it below the surface on a few shots. It took us a lot of convincing to get that in there."

The Fantastic Four films are being rebooted in 2015, so we can kiss those sequel plans goodbye. Who knows if he'll show up in the new films, but here's what he looked like in 2007.

For comparison, here's what he looked like in the comics.
