The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 (2014)

Check out The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 concept art by Scott Lukowski!

The last sequel to The Hunger Games was a massive success and is the fifth highest-grossing film of 2014 and continued the epic scale of the novels by Suzanne Collins. Critic Robbie Collins of The Telegraph calls it "one of the most fascinating, vividly realised fantasy landscapes in recent cinema." Part of it's success were the use of real landscapes and sets in the film. Director Francis Lawrence told Coming Soon that he wanted to make the film as "honest and real as possible" to be "as immersive as possible for the movie and for the actors." This included building and using massive sets for the production. Designing all those sets takes some highly skilled artists and one of those artists, Scott Lukowski, shared some artwork on his site.

Lukowski is a professional concept illustrator who's worked on movies like The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014), Transformers (2007) and Transcendence (2014). See designs for the archery range, District 13's hangers and hallways. You can also see the S.S.C., (short for Simulated Street Combat) nicknamed "The Block" which was an artificial Capital City Block used for training. It was either cut out of the film or was used for the blocks of District 13. Either way, they're gorgeous.

Marvel's the Avengers (2012) - Loki (Tom Hiddleston), Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.)

Check out Avengersconcept art by Raj Rihal!

The Avengers sequel is only a little more than a week away, so it's a perfect time to share some concept art from the first film. The set designs of the first film are massive in scope and scale. Production designer James Chinlund told LA Times, "the first challenge that jumped out at me was how to make all of these characters from so many disparate worlds and visual vocabularies coexist in our world of today.

With the Iron Man films, Marvel had been so successful creating a seamless reality where the world felt plausible and even though Iron Man’s tech was otherworldly, it still felt grounded. You could tell how much care had been taken to maintain a truth in the visuals. I felt a tremendous sense of responsibility, to all of the incredibly talented artists and designers who had worked on the films before me, to deliver a world that was balanced and cohesive, and could contain all of these different visual threads."

One of the many talented artists that helped to craft that look was Raj Rihal. Rihal is a professional concept artist who's worked on Hollywood films like Oblivion (2013), Thor (2011) and Men in Black 3 (2012).

Lucasfilm and Disney released a teaser image of concept art for their upcoming Star Wars stand-alone film called Rogue One.

Click on the images to enlarge.

At Star Wars Celebration a teaser video was shown that shared concept art for the upcoming Star Wars: Rogue One. It's described as being set after Episode III: Revenge of the Sith and before Episode IV: A New Hope. It's telling the tale of a "rogue band of resistance fighters who must unite to steal the Death Star plans." If you remember in the first movie Darth Vader boards Princess Leia's ship looking for plans. General Tagge warned about technical plans for the Death Star that had been stolen by the Rebellion saying, "If the Rebels have obtained a complete technical readout of this station it is possible, however unlikely, that they might find a weakness, and exploit it."

This movie is set up to tell the story of how the plans were stolen. They look pretty cool and take the franchise in a new direction.

Check out Captain America: The Winter Soldierstoryboards by Federico D'Alessandro!

The latest Marvel film, Avengers: Age of Ultron  is a hit and leads the way to Captain America: Civil War. The fight cheoreography in Winter Soldier were staged for months, and highlighted Captain America's superhuman qualities to try and "move away from impressionistic action into specificity".

That kind of action is hard to visualize, so the directors Anthony and Joe Russo turned to storyboard artists to help them visualize the complex scenes which favored long shots. One of the storyboard artists on the film shared an animatic (or storyboards turned into video) that highlighted a key scene in the end between the Winter Soldier and Captain America in the end.

Federico D'Alessandro is the head storyboard artist and Animatics Supervisor at Marvel Studios, and has worked on films like Thor (2011), Captain America: The First Avenger (2011) and Iron Man 3 (2013).

Park said, "These are a few early concept versions I did for Ultron Mark 1. It was fun to paint up what essentially looks like a hobbled together creepy Iron Man with the classic Ultron look."

Here's what Ultron's "Mark I" look was like.
Quicksilver
Park added, "I had the pleasure of doing some design work on Pietro Maximoff aka Quicksilver for Avengers: Age of Ultron. The final design (not seen here) was done by Jack Dudman. But it was fun to explore what he could look like from his costume to his hair to how his running could look like. It was known early on that his costume wasn't going to be too 'costumey.' But I had to try to push it just a bit."

Rumored STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS Concept Art Shows Lupita Nyong'o's Character

Check out rumored Star Wars: The Force Awakens concept art of Maz Katana!

I've already said I think 90% of Star Wars VII concept art isn't real. But this one is popular, so I'll share it. Recently, Vanity Fair magazine revealed the name of Lupita Nyong'o's character and Indie Revolver, who accurately predicted the "Chrome Trooper", now known as Captain Phasma, played by Gwendoline Christie. Now they've released concept art they say is a production painting of Maz Katana.

Click on the images to enlarge.

I'm skeptical, but it's entirely possible that it's real. After all, they say she is in the trailer briefly.

On the other hand, this could be official concept art of another alien in the film and not Maz Katana at all. We'll know when the movie comes out.

The Vanity Fair article gave a caption that confirmed Lupita Nyong'o is a pirate. She has a castle with "galactic travelers, smugglers, and other assorted riffraff" filling the main hall. Pirates have always been important to Star Wars and early drafts for A New Hope had a number of pirates.

Maz Katana's allegiance is a mystery though and we don't know whether she's on the side of the Resistance (the film’s new term for the Rebel Alliance) or The New Order (the film's new name for the Empire).

Mad Max: Fury Road  (2015)
Check out Mad Max: Fury Road concept art by Brendan McCarthy!

The fourth Mad Max movie has roared to a huge opening weekend and io9 calls it "an astonishing work of art" which is just what production designer Colin Gibson said they were looking for. Every car and vehicle had it's own insane personality. “We wanted to find things that were iconic,” Gibson told Jalopnik. “Cars that had a particular resonance in Australia, and then design them as the boys would’ve.” Co-writer Brendan McCarthy helped create the look of the film and shared some of the early designs on his website.

McCarthy is an award winning British artist and designer who's worked on big budget films like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1990), Lost in Space (1998) and Coneheads (1993).

Click on the images to enlarge.

"The original Mad Max trilogy was to me, the greatest of the 80s franchise movies." McCarthy said, "I loved George Miller’s highly original and surreal ‘post-apocalyptic westerns’ as they have been called — especially the second instalment, Mad Max 2, The Road Warrior. Co-writing and designing the initial storyline and visuals for Mad Max Fury Road was a great thrill. The movie has turned really well and was released to much acclaim. I’m very happy to have been invited to rethink and reignite this terrific film series.

"Featured here are some of my early concept images. You’ll see a lot of my design philosophy and original creations for the movie; from The Buzzards (the buzz-saw wielding spiked vehicles), the Pole Cats (boarding marauders on poles), the whole ‘retro hotrod’ look of the Armada and some character designs. I’ve also included design ideas that didn’t make the finished movie."

Grodd Lives in THE FLASH Concept Art by John Gallagher

Check out The Flash (2014) concept art by John Gallagher!

The TV Show The Flash promised that the long-time villain Gorilla Grodd would make an appearance, but he only got brief momments. That is until the episode "Grodd Lives" which aired a few weeks back and we finally got to see what Grodd could do. One of the artists that helped establish the style and look for Grodd is artist John Gallagher and he recently shared some of the style art on his DeviantArt page. He already shared style art for Reverse Flash and Girder.

Gallagher is a professional concept artist who's worked on Hollywood projects like Mockingbird Lane (2012) and V (2009).

I talked to John briefly and here's what he said about working on the show and what he described as the "tone piece and explainer".

"Gorilla Grodd has such a rich visual and narrative history that it's nearly impossible to miss the mark." Gallagher said, "It all becomes about what story you're wanting to tell and where it lands in his evolutionary arc. In our case, Grodd is a newly formed rapidly evolving super hominid, so it's early in his tract: Learning exponentially, mastering language and the written word, moving far beyond the trappings of normality. Sewers would normally be a place a regular primate would actively avoid, but Grodd is no regular primate. Plus they work very well as a reveal scenario for building suspense, heightening mystery and of course are a place where most people are a natural sensory disadvantage, meta-human or not: smells awful, low visibility, an acoustic nightmare. But if you're a powerful psionic, well, the advantage is yours"

Marvelous DAREDEVIL Concept Art by Ryan Meinerding

Check out Daredevil concept art by Ryan Meinerding!

Marvel has released concept art of the costume for the Netflix original series Daredevil. Joe Quesada, Marvel CCO and one of the series' executive producers, said, "The starting point is always story. We had to come up with a logical reason as to how someone with Matt Murdock’s means and ability to actually make a costume could make that dramatic of a leap from the vigilante costume to the super hero [suit]. Once that logic was in play, which was the Melvin Potter of it all, we had to build to that point. I think if we had gone to that red costume too soon, it would have caused a lot of viewers to bump on the material, because it was so grounded in the real world." One of the talented artists to contribute to the design was Ryan Meinerding and he did an interview with Marvel explaining the designs. He said, "Joe Quesada got in touch and asked if I could help out. Our whole team actually did designs, [including] Rodney Fuentebella, Andy Park, Jackson Sze, Josh Nizzi, andAnthony Francisco. I think we all did a round of designs as fast as we could, and they settled on one of mine. Beyond that, we did our normal process of modeling the head and the cowl [in] 3D with Josh Herman, and then I was involved throughout the costume creation process."

Meinerding is a professional concept artist who's Marvel Studios Head of Visual Development and worked onHollywood blockbusters likeIron Man 3 (2012), Marvel's Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015)and Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)

"The tone that was really communicated was the sense of realism that they were going for," Meinerding said. "I think the way that [manifested itself in] the costume was through the armor and making it feel a little bit more padded than you traditionally think of Daredevil being. When we do these designs, there’s a concept of grounded and a concept of reality. The grounded nature that they brought to the vigilante costume was the simplicity and effectiveness, because you’re trying to conceal your identity but also [have to be] mobile enough to fight.

"When you do a super hero costume in that world, it’s hard to be as real as you need to be, because you’re making it heightened. So you try and find the touchstones for that with armoring pieces that you would want armored, like your shins and your forearms for blocking and hitting as well as having things be riveted on. The overall layout of that costume is really that it’s meant to look like a Kevlar vest with stuff underneath it. That’s what we were going for."

Quesada was extremely happy with the work and said, "Ultimately I think the silhouette is always what’s really important. Does it look heroic? Does it look like our character? If he stands on the parapet of a roof and turns his head and we see those devil horns, is it Daredevil? I think that’s where Ryan succeeded and exceeded all of our expectations. It’s Daredevil."

The movies are based on a series of books by Veronica Roth and shows a post-apocalyptic walled city where everyone has been segmented into one of five factions based on their skills and temperaments: Amity, Candor, Dauntless, Abnegation and Erudite. The remaining people are considered Factionless, while a small group, including Tris (Shailene Woodley) have qualities from all factions and are called Divergent. Thor: The Dark World (2013)
Check out Thor: The Dark Worldconcept art by Peter Popken!

Alan Taylor worked hard to balance the light and dark elements of Thor: The Dark World (also known as Thor: The Dark Kingdom). He told Screen Rant, "I think I went into it, and I thought my first task was to darken the world and deepen it and dirty it up a little bit. Um, I sort of felt like that was my mandate going in. And then as we started the process, I realized, 'Oops. Um, if we’re gonna darken it, if we’re gonna deepen it…we’d better make darn sure that it’s balanced on the other side.' Because the, you know, the key to the Marvel universe and the Marvel language that I was being assaulted by while I was making this movie -'cause 'Avengers' came out while we were starting it, and 'Iron Man 3' came out while we were finishing it – was you are screwed if you don’t also keep it funny and light on its feet at the same time. So it’s, it’s called 'The Dark World,' and there’s certainly dark currents in it, um, but, yeah, the humor was critical." Many of the scenes were moody and atmospheric and one of the artists that helped to bring that look to the screen was Peter Popken

Check out 2001: A Space Odysseypromo art by Robert T. McCall!

Every Friday, I try to feature artwork from a classic of science fiction cinema or television. This week's "Flashback Friday" post is on 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968).

Bob McCall had a wonderful career in the 1960s for Life Magazine illustrating their series on the future of space travel. Kubrick saw McCall's work in the magazine and cut them out as a reference while working on his film 2001. Kubrick then asked McCall to come to London and paint promotional material for his film. He later told Johnson Space Center Oral History Project, "My work with [Stanley] Kubrick in London was another facet of my career that was especially enjoyable and challenging and significant, in that it was for a film that has since become a classic."

Robert Theodore McCall was a professional illustrator who also worked on sci-fi classics like Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979),The Black Hole(1979) and Future Flight (1987) .

Leaked Concept Art and Storyboards for the JUSTICE LEAGUE Movie That Never Was by Tani Kunitake and Steve Skroce

Check out Justice League Mortal concept art and storyboards by Tani Kunitake and Steve Skroce!

With the success of George Miller's Mad Max: Fury Road, and the upcoming The Justice League Part 1 movie in 2017, it's time to look back at the superhero movie that never got made.

Back in 2007, Warner Bros had plans to make a DC superhero team film called Justice League: Mortal.

Australian director Ryan Unicomb is trying to get a documentary together about Miller's abandoned Justice League film. Over the weekend they released a few pieces of never-before-seen concept art from the film through their Twitter account. In addition, storyboard artist Steve Skroce posted some storyboards on his Facebook page. We don't know all the artist's names, but we know Tani Kunitake was one of them.

Tani Kunitake and Steve Skroce are professional concept and storyboard artists who've worked on Hollywood movies like The Matrix (1999), The Avengers (2012) and V for Vendetta (2006).

It would have been directed by George Miller and wouldn't have starred Brandon Routh as Superman or Christian Bale as Batman. Instead, they cast D. J. Cotrona as Superman and Armie Hammer as Batman. They were looking for a much younger cast. Megan Gale would have played Wonder Woman, Common was cast as Green Lantern, Adam Brody was Flash, Jay Baruchel would have been Maxwell Lord, Santiago Cabrera would have been Aquaman and Hugh Keays-Byrne was cast as Martian Manhunter, The rumored plot would have had "villainous businessman Maxwell Lord and cyborgs called OMACs (One-Man Army Corps)" take over humans and turn them into "killing machines."

It's important to remember that in the early stages of a film literally hundreds of concept designs are done and most are unused. We're only seeing a handful and they may never have been used. They can tell us the direction the film-makers were headed though.

Steve Skroce said, "I'm seeing a lot of art from the cancelled George Miller Justice League film so here's a few boards that I did for the film. It was incredibly fun drawing the DC comics characters which I hadn't had the opportunity to do until then. It's Wonder Woman versus Superman ( they have their reasons, mind control!)"

Neuromancer (1984) book cover
Check out Neuromancer concept art by Tsutomu Nihei!

Back in 1984, writer William Gibson wrote a book about a computer hacker Case who is searching the virtual computer world for a cure. A movie based on the cyber-punk novel has been in development for years, but has never been made. Dan Fraga showed some early storyboards for Robert Vaughn and some concept art for Joseph Kahn showed up as well.

In 2010, Vincenzo Natali (Cube, Splice) took on the job of rewriting and directing the film based on the movie. He worked on it for five years, but he's off the project. Natali released a ton of fascinating concept art for some of his unmade films. He also included some from the long delayed Neuromancer movie he was working on. He took to Twitter to show what was done in pre-production. Some of the works were done by the celebrated Japanese manga artist Tsutomu Nihei who's well known for his cyberpunk-influenced artwork.

Tsutomu Nihei (弐瓶 勉) is a professional artist who's worked on projects like Blame! (2004) and Sidonia no Kishi (2014).

This from a scene with Case using the Chinese "Kuang Grade Mark Eleven" icebreaker virus. Here's the way the virus was described in the book:
"Something dark was forming at the core of the Chinese program. The density of information overwhelmed the fabric of the matrix, triggering hypnagogic images. Faint kaleidoscopic angles centered in to a silver-black focal point. Case watched childhood symbols of evil and bad luck tumble out along translucent planes: swastikas, skulls and crossbones, dice flashing snake eyes. If he looked directly at that null point, no outline would form. It took a dozen quick, peripheral takes before he had it, a shark thing, gleaming like obsidian, the black mirrors of its flanks reflecting faint distant lights that bore no relationship to the matrix around it. `That's the sting,' the construct said. `When Kuang's good and bellytight with the Tessier-Ashpool core, we're ridin'~ that through."

Official NeuromancerSummary
The Matrix: a world within a world, a graphic representation of the databanks of every computer in the human system; a consensual hallucination experienced daily by billions of legitimate users in the Sprawl alone. And by Case, computer cowboy, until his nervous system is grievously maimed by a client he double-crossed. Japanese experts in nerve splicing and microbionics have left him broke and close to dead. But at last Case has found a cure. He's going back into the system. Not for the bliss of cyberspace but to steal again, this time from the big boys, the almighty megacorps. In return, should he survive, he will stay cured.

Check out Mad Max: Fury Road concept art by Philippe Gaulier!

One of the biggest scenes in the new Mad Max film was a "Toxic Storm" that George Miller said "was the climax of the first act and had to be spectacular." Method Studios was tasked with visualizing this key scene and one of the concept artists Phillipe Gaulier helped produce concept art that was described as a "a super cell type storm".

Philippe Gaulier is a professional concept artist who's worked on big budget films like Inception (2010), Iron Man 2 (2010) and Jupiter Ascending (2015).

Method Studios worked with Iloura and Tom Wood, Iloura's VFX supervisor, told IndieWire, "It was the first sequence George Miller passed to us, it occurs early in the film, and is pivotal to the story so he needed it resolved as soon as possible. The sequence was delivered to us by production as an incomplete post-vis construction. The cut was solid and twisters were laid out represented by inverted cones with spinning textures."

Gaulier said it "was just a short gig" but enjoyed working on it.They looked at parts of the pre-viz to get a feel of what director George Miller wanted. Wood said, "When I visited the set in Namibia, I showed the concepts to George and he loved them. As the sequences were cut, the artwork was used in editorial and the look pretty much stayed the same."
