The latest sequel to the hit Marvel movie "Guardians of the Galaxy" (2014) is currently in preproduction. Recently James Gunn revealed that the script for "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" (2023) left Karen Gillan - who plays Nebula and her co-star, Pom Klementieff - who plays Mantis - in "floods of tears." So big things are on the way.

Back when the second movie was released it featured the little-known villain Ego the Living Planet played by Kurt Russell. In the comics, he's literally a planet that achieves sentience. In the movie, he's a primordial being that learned to manipulate the molecules around himself and create a life-like planet. Ego is able to create a human-like entity for himself which impregnates Peter Quill's mother.

The costume designer Judianna Makovsky talked about creating the costume for Russell. "We wanted something where he was kind of a space frontiersman mixed with a little bit of western because that's Kurt Russell's style," Makovsky shared in the production notes. "I didn't want to do a typical, superhero where it's molded and hard. So it's actually all leather like a frontiersman would be, and we laced it all together. It's layers and layers of different leathers on top of each other that are laser-etched and dyed to make an almost medieval/renaissance detail all over it.

"When we first talked about it with Kurt, he looked at some of the sketches and really got it. It's kind of like a space conquistador like Don Quixote. We looked at actually how conquistador clothes were made and we went in that direction, but made his pants and boots very modern."

The path to Russell's movie costume went through many iterations and concept artist Kevin Chen shared some of his illustrations for the film on his site. He also shared some artwork for the incredibly elaborate costumes for Ayesha the Golden High Priestess of the Sovereign.

Chen is a professional concept artist who's worked on major motion projects like Guardians of the Galaxy (2014), The Amazing Spider-Man (2012), and Ender's Game (2013).
