Check out Birds Of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) concept art by Greg Hopwood!
At the world premiere of Birds of Prey actress and producer Margot Robbie admitted to being "incredibly proud and incredibly nervous". While reviews were mixed the movie stands as a wonderful step forward in its portrayal of women in superhero movies.
One scene, in particular, is taken from the comics. In the movie, Harley Quinn roller skates in a rink taking people out for fun. This is a reference to a job she gets in 2013's Harley Quinn #1. In the comic, she works at the Coney Island Roller Derby and earns the nickname "Killer Kwinn". The movie is the work of many talented artist and one shared artwork for the movie on their personal Instagram account.
Greg Hopwood is a professional concept artist who's worked on Hollywood projects like Venom (2018), The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 (2014), and Passengers (2016).
"Part of the process of being a costume concept artist is juggling multiple ideas for any single element of an outfit, like Harley’s Derby Skates," Hopwood said in his Instagram post. "[Costume Designer] Erin Benach loved the idea of the caution tape on the helmet, so we had to re-assess her skates. The thought was what kind of skates Harley Quinn might buy or even make / modify herself? Being apart of these discussions are my favorite part of my job. You have to understand the characters mindset to see what might catch their eye in a shop, or what might inspire them to break out their craft bin, hot glue gun, and glitter. In Harley’s case, this can lead down some weird rabbit holes. The severed Barbie head and tortured Lisa Frank-like stickers of option D, along with the more subtle Positive messaging of option F were a blast to work on. Ultimately Erin [chose] Option B for her look, which was a hard [nod] to her iconic costume from Batman: The Animated Series."
