Ant-Man (2015) |
Marvel just released a new movie schedule that includes a sequel to the blockbuster hit Ant-Man. Ant-Man and the Wasp is scheduled to release July 6th, 2018. Andy Park, one of the many talented artists, shared some key frame concept art on his Facebook page and kindly agreed to do an interview for my blog.
Park is a professional concept artist who's worked on Hollywood movies like Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (2013), Thor: The Dark World(2013) and Iron Man 3(2013).

Maurice Mitchell. While you probably worked on many things what did you spend most of your time on for the film?
Andy Park: Most of my time was spent designing the Ant-Man character consisting of his costume and helmet design. Sammy Sheldon & her team did an amazing job making the design come to life on Paul Rudd. I know it wasn't an easy one to pull off.
MM: You said that Ant-Man is the most rewarding experience you've had at Marvel. Why would you say that is?
AP: Well to be specific I said that working on the Ant-Man film was "one" of the most rewarding experiences I've had during my 5+ years as a concept artist at Marvel Studios. There have been so many highlights through the years. But I loved the challenge of designing the Ant-Man suit. If you look at his traditional comic book look it is quite extreme with his large bulbous helmet and really "comic booky" look. So the challenge was to bridge that gap- making it believable while staying true to it's roots. And based on the story, the biggest challenge was to create a design that looks like it was built decades ago but still look cool for modern sensibilities. He doesn't get a modern upgraded suit in this movie like Iron Man did for his first film so it had to work for both the past & present. It was a fun challenge.
I love designing any Marvel character but the ones I find the most fun (& challenging) are the ones that are more "comic booky." It's because they can easily become cheesy or fake looking or to be honest just silly. But I'm also not a fan of changing the traditional look so much just to make it "real" either. A successful comic book film design is one that respects its origins and finds a way to make it real, believable, AND cool.
MM: Was there a particular design you found the most challenging?
AP: It was definitely Ant-Man. After finding that design it was just pure fun doing designs for Wasp & Yellowjacket mainly because those designs played off of Ant-man's.
Here's what the Wasp costume looked like
