Every Friday I feature artwork from a classic of science fiction cinema. This week's "Flashback Friday" post is on Predator 2(1990).
The sequel to Predator moved from the jungle to the city. With that change director Stephen Hopkins wanted a different look for the Predator. He wanted a more "urban and hip" alien creature.
"The director wanted this Predator to be more colorful, with flashier, more intricate weapons,” said Shane Mahan. "The design of the Predator’s head was also altered a bit to make it look like it was a different individual – the same species, but a different character. It was steeper and a little shallower. We didn’t just want to pull out the old mold from the first movie and paint it differently, because we thought audiences would detect that."
In the first movie we only saw one Predator, but in the sequel we saw several. And each Predator was different in size, shape, color and texture. Stan Winston, legendary special effects supervisor and makeup artist, explained why. "Broad concept's the same," Winston said, "The difference is, this is a different individual. A different individual of the same species. As in a snake is a snake, but different snakes are different. Their colorings are different, different parts of their characteristics, their facial structures, subtle differences."
Crash McCreery is a professional concept and special effects artist who's worked on classic Hollywood films like Jurassic Park(1983), Batman Returns(1992) and Galaxy Quest (1999). John Rosengrant is an Oscar nominated visual effects supervisor on big budget films like The Avengers (2012), Avatar (2009) and Constantine (2005).
