Doug Chiang and Iain McCaig talk with Warwick Davis |
Here's how we know the next Star Wars will be amazing! Some of the same amazing artists are back! Actor Warwick Davis sat down with Star Wars prequel concept artists Doug Chiang and Iain McCaig backstage at "Star Wars Celebration Europe" in Essen, Germany last year. In this interview they talk about working on the upcoming Star Wars: Episode VII (2015), how to draw Darth Maul, how George Lucas would inspire his artists and how to make concept art timeless by using real culture and adding 10%.
Doug Chiang and Iain McCaig are professional concept and storyboard artists who've worked on blockbuster films like Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991), The Mask (1994)and The Avengers (2012).
While talking about working on the next Star Wars film Doug Chiang said, "For me it's such a treat. It comes full circle because I've been thinking Star Wars since I saw it when I was fifteen. In the films that I've done since then I've always imbued a little bit of Star Wars into those films in terms of what I draw because it's just naturally in me."
Iain McCaig added, "You get very, very fond of the characters you create and for Padme I was there the day she was born and I was there when she died and I got to do her funeral costume. It's like you really are there with your kids growing up."
"I think the biggest thing though besides the actual work itself is having Iain and the whole team back." Chiang said, "It is like family on that level because we're all artists in the industry we all kind of grew up together and to grab the gang back is just fantastic. We have a blast every day."
McCaig laughed and said, "We've done the psychic thing where I've been doing a drawing and, across the room , one of the other artists will say, 'Hey I've got this idea!' And he'll hold it up and it's literally the same drawing."
